5 Ugly Truths about Life That Will Make You a Better Person

It isn’t always easy to become a higher version of yourself. There are ugly truths that must be faced in order to change for the better.
I’m not here to say you are a bad person. I cannot make that judgment. But the truth remains, there is always room for improvement, and you can see it in what you’re not doing.For instance, take a moment and write down a few positive actions you’re taking. Don’t write down your qualities, no, think about what you’ve actually done that’s brought about a positive outcome or helped someone. Ugly truths say that list may be short. It may be hard to think of any positive actions you’ve taken lately, even though you do mean well.
I can attest to this myself. I talk about all the things I want to do to help someone, but I only accomplish around a fraction of those things. To be a better person in life, I have to glance into the ugly face of truth for myself. There are many things I can do in order to become the person I want to be. It is hard sometimes to face up to this.
There are a few examples of ugly truths, in case you’re wondering what’s holding you back. Take a look.

Ugly truths that bring good outcomes

1. The world only wants what you can provide

No matter how good of a person you think you are, the world only cares how much you can provide with the skills you possess. Do you think the world thinks about your charming personality or your empathetic nature?
I’m sorry, but to the world, these things are just pretty icing on a cake that may or may not taste good to them. What the world wants is someone who can make money, build things, produce things, and provide any demand it throws out.
So, to be a better person, you must accept this truth. It may be a mean spirited attitude that the world has, but it’s the ugly truth, that the worlds wants. When you accept this raw honesty, what happens is you learn to love yourself despite what the world wants. You can choose to provide however you wish, and understand that this is what the world likes, but you can also appreciate who you are, and this makes you better for it.

2. People will let you down

Do you remember telling your best friend that secret and how they promised to never tell anyone? Yeah, they told someone, maybe even a few people. A good friend once told me that when you tell one person a secret, at least one other person will know, and so on. The ugly truth is, it is almost impossible to have a friend who doesn’t spill the beans occasionally, and at least to one individual.
And that’s not all, people will disappoint you in other ways too. If you think you will get into a relationship and it will be perfect, you are delusional. It will be bad at times, maybe many times. Your employer will not be perfect, your family will not be perfect. People are imperfect and they cannot do the right thing 100% of the time. So, get used to it.

3. What’s worthwhile requires hard work

You will never be able to have something truly special or productive if you don’t work really hard. I know this is not what you want to hear, but it’s the hard truth. You know those laid-back people who believe in “taking it easy”, yeah, they usually don’t fulfill great goals in their lives. I promise, just watch them for a while and see for yourself.
If you want to stand out and get a promotion, for instance, you must work your butt off and do so in such a way that you get noticed as a highly productive employee. If you work a little, you will reap only a small reward. If you stay busy and productive, you can fulfill great dreams.

4. Perfect happiness doesn’t exist

If you think some particular thing is all you need to be perfectly happy, you are wrong. There is nothing in the world that can make you happy to the point where you will have no other troubles.
True happiness is within, and I am sure you’ve heard this before. Now, this is true, but, this true happiness from within will also never be perfect. Life is not perfect, we are not either, and the ugly truth is… happiness is fleeting. However, there is nothing wrong with pursuing it anyway. Just always be aware that it doesn’t last forever.

5. You will die

Did you know that for the most part, we ignore the fact that we’re going to die? It might not be tomorrow, next month, or even next year. In fact, we may live a hundred years. But, the fact remains, we will die.
This is an ugly truth that should have you organizing your priorities and getting the most out of each and every day. But since we ignore, deny, or just turn our face away from death, we get lazy and we procrastinate. Yes, I guess I’m preaching doom and gloom here, but to be honest, you will, someday, somehow… die. So, face it and be better for it too.

The ugliness of truth will help you

Thinking that life is a fairy tale may be fun in the short term, but it will make you waste away in the long run. If we face things in truth, we can find ways to better use our time, hopefully, wisely.
I cannot brag about this at all. I think sometimes I am terrible at facing the truth and its ugliness, and I watch hours of television or scroll mindlessly on the computer. Is this a pattern you recognize in yourself.
I urge you, as a fellow procrastinator, to join me in facing the ugly truths of life. It will hurt, but just think of how worthwhile your life will be when you stop denying what’s really happening. We can do this.

Optimism isn’t always the easiest way to approach life, but is realistic optimism more ideal?
We would all love to be as optimistic as possible all the time. Unfortunately, this will not be the case – and that’s ok. It’s fine to acknowledge that things aren’t always going to go perfectly despite our desires for that. Keeping a positive state of mind, and practicing realistic optimism, may serve you better than blind positivity.
The difference between the two is is that blind positivity contains a sense of ignorance to it. Ignorance does not mean stupidity, it just means a lack of knowledge about something. Taking a blind positivity approach may seem like an ideal mindset, but it will not do you any favors in the long run. Blind positivity makes you shut out the outside world. It puts a pair of blinders on your head and doesn’t allow you to face reality.
Blind positivity creates a false sense of reality and it glosses over areas of life, creates ignorance, and shuts out a lot of the world. The big issue with this is that it causes you to minimize experiences, and this can slowly eat away at your life.
This article will look at why realistic optimism is a much better approach and ways to cultivate it.

What Is Realistic Optimism?

Ideally, you don’t want to be overly pessimistic, and also not blindly positive. Realistic optimism lies somewhere in the middle. It is thought that optimism is only helpful when it’s realistic.
One great definition of realistic optimism comes to us from the medical world. If you are coming out of a major injury, or serious illness, you have to be realistic in how you approach the immediate future. One must ease back into daily activities and understand what the limitations are. Some things will limit you, some will be off-limits, but others will be possible.
This is the approach that embraces realistic optimism – understanding your limitations. Realistic optimism acknowledges negativity, but it doesn’t dwell on it.
Another way to look at realistic optimism is how you respond to when life knocks you down. It’s easy to take a negative approach and feel pity and self-sorrow.
We all have negative thoughts, there’s no denying or escaping that. So why do some people remain positive while others are extremely negative and pessimistic? If we all share these negative thoughts from time to time, what allows you to break free from them?
Here are some ways to cultivate realistic optimism:

1. Understand What Is And Isn’t In Your Control

In the case of the person coming off of an illness, injury or setback, the first thing to do is to start with a list of what you can do, what you have difficulty doing, and then the things you just can’t do.
Seeing the list of the things you can do can be a great way to boost optimism while being realistic – as the list may be longer than you expected. The list of things you would have difficulty doing can also create some optimism as it means they are not totally ruled out.
This middle list can give you a challenge and it can help you create realistic goals and timelines to accomplish this. Having a goal is always a great way to stay positive, motivated, and optimistic.

2. Understanding You Can’t Change The Past, You Can Only Change The Present

It’s so easy to dwell on past mistakes and screwups. You may wish you could just go into your mind and rip these negative thoughts out to never be seen again. It can get to where you feel these bad memories define who you are and you can’t escape them. The realistic optimism approach is to remember that you can’t change the past, you can only change the present.
When a memory that comes up that you wish you had reacted better to, tell yourself that this was the best you could do at the time. It’s ok that you didn’t have enough information, or weren’t strong enough then. Instead, learn from it and use it to make better decisions in the future.
There’s no point in beating yourself up for past mistakes as they are over and done with. Realistic optimism is about working with those negative thoughts, but keeping them in the past so they don’t prevent you from moving forward.

3. It’s All About Being Proactive In Your Approach

The realistic optimist is still at their core, passionately optimistic. They are just able to see things from all viewpoints and take in, and process, a variety of information.
Not only are they very aware, but they are also very proactive in making things happen and knowing they will succeed. Some of the most successful people are realistic optimists as they take all the best elements of realism, and optimism, and combine them together.
Realistic optimism is all about perseverance and determination. It acknowledges that setbacks will happen, but they don’t have to define or disrupt you. Winston Churchill was the definition of the realistic optimist, most notably, when he said: “Never, never, never give up.”

4. Give Yourself More Credit

Again, it’s easy to focus on the negative. We seem to do that as it’s away to avoid taking responsibility for our own actions. If we can blame things on our circumstances, we’re off the hook for being an active participant in our own lives. Realistic optimism understands that things will not always be perfect, but makes it a point to celebrate the small wins.
It’s the approach that every cloud has a silver lining, and list what you did best – however small it may be. Don’t be afraid to pat yourself on the back and celebrate your successes.

Final Thoughts

Blind positivity sounds nice, but it’s not a realistic way to go through life. On the other hand, you don’t want to be focussed on negative pessimism. Both of these are surefire ways to rob yourself of true joy.
Realistic optimism emerges as the perfect alternative to both. Being realistically optimistic allows you to be as positive as possible despite the circumstances, while not ignoring the hardships. The sooner you can come to grips to letting go of the things out of your control, and embrace realistic optimism, the freer you can feel.

How often has the inability to get things done held you back in life? Overcoming procrastination can be one of the most significant things to take back control of your life.
Procrastination can throw a wrench in your ability to work, create, and progress. We all know the feeling; the longer you put something off, the worse it gets. It can reach the point where even the simplest task feels overwhelming and monumental. When you learn to overcome procrastination, you can take back your life.
This article will look at 4 strategies for overcoming procrastination that use science to back them up.

Why Do We Procrastinate?

Why do we put off the simplest tasks? It could be doing the laundry or calling about a dentist’s appointment, but when you are faced with these minimal assignments, they feel like having to move a giant boulder. Why are we more likely to put off even the simplest thing?
Procrastination isn’t about laziness, or being bad at time management – it goes a lot deeper. There are many fields of psychology that all look at procrastination in a slightly different way. Neurophysiologists say it can be more about execution function and failing to do that. This basically means you have a mismanaged way of how you plan ahead or prioritize things.
Social psychologists may consider it more related to emotional regulation problems. It could come down to simply wanting to avoid stress. If you peel back the layers on the human experience, everything we do comes down to two approaches:
  1. Gain pleasure
  2. Avoid pain
Calling to make a dentist’s appointment isn’t a massive trauma, but there is still an obligation, expectation, and responsibility to do it. This is enough to create a bit of stress. And even a little stress is still stress. Your body will avoid it at all costs, and this may be why you procrastinate. From an evolutionary perspective, this may all be about self-preservation.

What Does Science Say about Procrastination?

The one good thing to consider when you look at overcoming procrastination is to know you’re not alone. Procrastination impacts almost every person at one point or another. The issue is how severe it gets and if it becomes a debilitating condition.
Procrastination might even be part of our evolutionary makeup. Researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder looked to see if this issue may be genetic. They asked pairs of twins what specific work habits they had. They looked at fraternal twins (who only share some of their DNA), and identical twins (who share all of their DNA).
All the sets of twins grew up together, so the researchers looked to see if genetics had some influence in their procrastination. They found that about half the time, the differences in procrastination could be because of differences in genetics. What this all means is that procrastination might be built right into us.
So how do you start overcoming procrastination? Here are 4 ways:

1. Start Very Small

Have you ever noticed when you start cleaning up something very small, you then realize you have cleaned the whole house without realizing it? This is the importance of starting small with any task, and it’s probably the most important strategy for overcoming procrastination.
Don’t feel you have to take on the whole thing at once, but break it down into smaller, more manageable chunks. When you start with the smallest thing first, it has a spillover effect that creates momentum and motivation to keep you going.
There’s science behind this too: the research shows that when you start a task, your brain continues to process it even when it’s not finished. You’ll be more likely to return to it and complete it. We remember the tasks we haven’t completed more than the ones we’ve finished.

2. Break Up the Tasks into Timed Intervals

They call this the Pomodoro method, and I’m using it right now to write this article. The brain can only fully focus on so much before it needs a break. Francesco Pomodoro invented the technique in the 80s and it uses timed intervals to help keep you on task.
Every 25 minutes you take a break for 3-5 minutes. This gives your brain a chance to “breathe” before stress sets in. After you have done 4 cycles of 25 minutes, you would take a 15-20 minute break before starting again.
Not only does this help you become more productive and improve your time management, but it also makes you more motivated to start. If you know you have breaks coming up very soon, it’s easier to begin a task or assignment. The prospect of having to work 4 hours straight is an easy way to talk yourself out of doing it.
Another benefit of this technique is that it tells your mind that there is a sense of urgency. Because there is a timer, there is the sense that you better get started. If you feel you have endless time during the day, it makes it much harder to start.

3. Overcoming Procrastination by Understand Your Limitations

If you are someone who can read for an hour, that’s working within your limitations. If an hour seems overwhelming, consider the effort you’re willing to commit to that task. They call this “finding your resistance level.” If the hour seems too much, what about 25-30 minutes? Narrow this amount of time down until you get to the point where you feel more willing to undertake the task.

4. Look at the Costs of Your Procrastination

Some procrastination doesn’t have significant repercussions – but some can be extreme. If you’re putting off bigger tasks, make a list of the things that will happen if you do not get this thing done. When you see this list looking back at you, the consequences of not completing it appear more clearly.
This can work on a small scale too, such as not doing your laundry. Issues from this could be:
  1. The build-up of more and more clothes to wash and more time to have to commit
  2. Nothing clean to wear to work
  3. Having to wear the same thing on multiple days which can lead to embarrassment
  4. Wearing clothes that smell which is even more embarrassment and shame
A simple task can spiral out of control. So take a few minutes and write a list of how not getting started on something will hurt you in the long run.

Final Thoughts

Overcoming procrastination won’t happen overnight, but it is very achievable. Another bonus tip is to free yourself from distractions before starting a task. There are so many things vying for our attention, so make sure you limit what can reach you. This could mean turning off your phone or turning it to airplane mode to avoid distracting notifications that prevent you from starting (I’m also doing this right now while writing this article).
Procrastination is nothing to feel bad about. It’s natural, part of the human experience, and also appears to be genetic. By getting a better understanding of procrastination, and using these strategies, you will be more likely to overcome and conquer it.

Could the simple approach of altering an apology and saying thank you be a much better form of communication?
Expressing gratitude is something they teach us from a young age. It shows appreciation, kindness, and respect. You probably never think of saying thank you when it comes to apologizing – but it may be a more effective approach.
If you work and deal with the public, this can be a much more effective strategy than constantly apologizing. This isn’t just for someone who works in retail, but switching from saying ‘I’m sorry’ to ‘Thank you‘ may help in your daily relationships.
This article looks at a recent study that took a deeper look into this approach.

The Science Behind Why Saying ‘Thank You’ Is Better

This study was a multi-university approach and dealt with the issue of customer service satisfaction. The University of South Carolina, New Mexico State University, Zhejiang University in China, and The Ohio State University worked together to investigate this.
They looked at the issue of consumers’ expectations of quality service being higher than ever. Business leaders around the world have recognized this increase in service quality demand. At the same time, it’s clear that there are many issues surrounding customer interactions with service providers.
The attempt of this study was to find the best way to restore customer satisfaction as it’s needed in retail and business. The whole issues go far beyond a consumer feeling disregarded as poor customer service is costing companies billions of dollars. In 2016, the U.S. lost a staggering $1.6 trillion dollars because of customers switching to competing companies. This was all because of poor service. This has a spillover effect because of word-of-mouth and the damage that comes from this.
These days, word-of-mouth happens online – and it happens fast. Poor service has led to 44% of unsatisfied customers venting about it on social media. A bad review or report that goes viral can sink a company. This is nowhere more clear than in the hospitality industry, with a large proportion of consumers unsatisfied with how things go when dining out.
So what we have we seen to remedy this situation, and how can you apply it to your own life?

Why You Need to Stop Apologizing

The study looked at how service providers could restore customer satisfaction after a service failure. They focused on two different forms of recovery communicationsaying ‘thank you’ (showing appreciation) and saying ‘sorry’ (the apology). The example the study gives has to do with a plumber who was late for an appointment: the plumber could either say “I am sorry you had to wait,” or “Thank you for your patience.”
The study found that showing appreciation to the consumer was a more effective approach. Saying ‘thank you’ was better at restoring consumer satisfaction than saying “I’m sorry.”
This has practical effects in real-world situations. When service providers show appreciation, the consumer becomes satisfied that the situation has been recovered in the best way possible. This leads the customer to stick with that business, recommend it to others, and less likely to complain in the future.
When you constantly say you’re sorry to someone, they get the sense that you aren’t doing everything in your power to improve the situation. Only saying sorry to a person (whether it’s a customer, friend, associate, etc) gives them the impression that you’ve washed your hands of things and what’s done is done.
According to the study, saying ‘I’m sorry’ emphasizes the service provider’s fault, while saying ‘thank you’ makes the customer feel more important.

Why Is Saying Thank You So Much More Powerful?

The sense of importance a customer feels is because saying thank you highlights their merits and contributions. When you say ‘thank you for your patience’ you are showing the positive contribution they have made. This may seem small, but it’s a way to improve a person’s self-esteem. With business, it enhances post-recovery satisfaction. With a friend or family member, it enhances the bond between the two of you.
When you say ‘Thank you’ instead of ‘I’m sorry’ – in any aspect of your life – it helps you deal with even the most difficult people. A narcissistic person only thinks of themselves, and if you can highlight their contribution and merits, they embrace this and can adapt quicker. Saying ‘I’m sorry’ takes the emphasis away from them and puts it on you.
Sometimes an apology is needed, but you just need to read the situation and see what it calls for. In the service industry example; saying ‘thank you’ (the appreciative approach) will be the best approach for those highly narcissistic people. The appreciation approach might not work as well for customers and people who are quiet, shy and show low narcissism.

What to Take Away from This Study

The key takeaway is that saying ‘thank you’ isn’t a way to get out of apologizing, but has some real resolution power to it. If you work in a retail setting, this can be a great time to use this method with the rise of angry and unreasonable customers. Besides saying ‘thank you for your patience,’ you can also use variations of:
  • Thank you for your understanding
  • Thank you for coming to me with this
  • I appreciate you bringing this to my attention, thank you
On a personal level, saying ‘thank you’ does a better job of resolving a conflict with another person. The appreciation approach gets you onto their level and they feel valued. It’s all about shifting the focus from things being your fault and spotlight the merit in others.
People rarely feel appreciated, and if you can do this in a negative situation, you create a better bond, connection, and resolution with that person. Ultimately, they go away feeling better about themselves.
Saying ‘thank you’ isn’t a cop-out, it’s a simple way to improve the lives of those around you.

I believe it’s appropriate to say both “I’m sorry” and “Thank you” in the same situation, if applicable. For example, if you’re late to a meeting with me, you’ve just wasted some of my time and my time, as with everyone’s, is valuable and finite. I need to know you understand and appreciate this concept. Even if being late was beyond your control. Apologize. And then say “thank you for your patience and understanding” which will assuage my annoyance letting me know you appreciate my situation making it possible for a productive meeting without any attitudes or misunderstandings. Neither “thank you” or “I’m sorry” should be over used as a go to response unnecessarily. I understand this study is primarily geared to customer service, however, it appears your suggesting to use this “thank you” approach in social or other professional situations. Don’t. Regardless of what the study says, if somebody screws up my order and says the words “thank you” in their first response sentence to me instead of apologizing, I’m thinking they’re clueless and WTF?! What I won’t be thinking is; “Gee, that was refreshing and nice. This company gets it. I’m gonna tell everybody about this positive experience”.

Understanding your way around technology improves your chances in life. Digital literacy doesn’t mean reading a book online. The only difference between reading a physical book and reading online is a page versus a screen. There’s little learning in that because anyone can do it.
 
Digital literacy means much more than that. It means learning how to research, protect, and perform using digital tools and technology.
 
What’s good about digital literacy?
 
I was born learning from books in school and life experiences, the old fashioned way. I didn’t start working with technology for quite some time. Now, technology provides almost everything, and most of our research today is done through this mode of learning.
 
As much as I appreciated the old techniques of learning from the 80s, I realize that tech literacy in today’s digital age is the path to success now, and we can widen and improve that pathway as well.
How to improve your digital literacy:
 
1. Implement social media
 
Some say that social media can be bad for people, but it can also be a great tool for learning. After all, they spend loads of time on these various social platforms anyway. Since they already know a bit about social media, there’s an opportunity to teach them how to learn through this media too.
 
Let’s take a look at a few examples: Facebook can be used to communicate ideas through quick chat. You can also post images and ideas on “the wall” of an individual’s social media. Twitter is great for quick messages, and Pinterest is perfect for posting categories of images and ideas. You can even used LinkedIn for professional services such as networking and looking for jobs.
 
2. Online comparisons
 
While the internet does contain false information, it isn’t all bad for learning and becoming successful. To avoid ingesting false information, and retaining digital literacy, it’s important to consult multiple online sources in order to find the truth.
 
One way that I’ve learned important information online is to use the majority of matching facts to find the truth. Usually, false information isn’t repeated in multiple sources, but only usually, so you have to be able to discern what makes logical sense.
 
3. Learning from reputable sources
 
The internet is full of information, some true, and some false. That’s why learning about reputable sources is so important. While there may be many “.com” sites that provide correct information, only the scientifically proven truths can be found on “.gov or .edu.” sites and such.
 
It’s so important when striving to be successful in life, to get the correct information, and moreover, share that information with others. Not only are you learning, but you are helping others. Reputable sources prevents the spread of untruths, which can clog learning and drastically decrease chances of the success you are looking for.
 
4. Learn to avoid plagiarism
 
No, the internet hasn’t stopped plagiarism. It’s happening all the time. But by witnessing the different forms of plagiarism and how it ruins education, you can use this knowledge to perform better research, take better notes and learn about citing sources.
 
Also, you learn about using resources that fueled your work, of course, the work you created in your own words, that is. So digital literacy does much more than just helps us learn, it helps us become successful as genuine people.
 
5. Learning how to avoid digital distractions
 
This may be the most difficult part of excelling in digital literacy of all. It is so easy to get distracted while online, especially if you have multiple pages open. Now, I know research requires this sometimes, but it’s easier if you can, at least, mute notifications during this process. While reading, the other pages may remain open, but they can be left in the background until you’re finished.
 
Also, always avoid multitasking. Although many people brag about being able to do more than one thing at a time, it’s not really as effective as you think. Yes, you may be moving through several tasks at once, but you’re not putting your full potential on any of them.
 
Digital literacy, in this case, means learning how to halt distractions whatever they may be, even outside distractions. Then the job gets done correctly and with your full attention.
 
6. Respecting netiquette
 
When using social media for learning purposes, there will be many conversations, and there will also be debates. A debate is not necessarily an argument, but just a difference in an opinion discussed by two or more people.
 
I’ve personally watched debates turn ugly and it was a shame to me. Instead of learning, most of the people in the fights came away with anger, resentment, and bitterness. Friends were lost and some were even temporarily blocked from the media platform.
 
So, respecting netiquette, or online etiquette, allows each person to have an opinion, whether it aligns with others or if it differs. Having differences of opinions opens up avenues for even more learning, and prompts more questions.
 
What could be more beneficial to being successful than asking questions and receiving answers, sharing intellect, and being corrected? Sometimes you even get to keep your opinion and understand that it’s okay to think differently.
 
7. Leaving the comfort zone
 
I believe that everyone has an area that scares them concerning technology, and so they stay in their comfort zones. They choose to retain only a little bit of information they’ve learned instead. However, leaving that comfort zone helps us become more proficient in digital literacy, which pretty much runs most of society today.
 
Yes, most kids can make small posts with hashtags, but there is so much more to be understood. Instead of these small posts, they could learn how to create a blog to share what they’ve learned with others.
 
Creating blogs and websites seems daunting, and this is why leaving the comfort zone is so important. You learn blogging, website and content creation and even how to check your own website status. You can monitor your progress which helps to boost your morale.
 
8. Protecting identity and image
 
I will admit that identity theft is rampant in our society today, but it’s not just happening online. However, the most successful person must learn how to protect certain aspects of their online identity.
 
We leave digital footprints wherever we go, and so that’s why it’s important to safeguard our identity in as many ways as possible. You should manage your privacy settings, two-step identification, and other techniques in order to keep unwanted individuals from stealing your identity and causing serious problems.
 
Just as you must protect your identity, it is also important to retain a positive online image. Trust me, it’s easier to start out protected and with a good image than when you have to repair issues.
 
Unfortunately, after being irresponsible online for many years, I have to continuously monitor my privacy and try to improve my identity. It has caused me career opportunities I would have if those mistakes had never happened.
 
Thriving in this digital age
 
We can hold on to some “old fashioned ways”, there’s nothing wrong with that, but learning new online techniques can greatly change the outcome of our success in life.
 
We may even understand technology to a certain degree already, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t strive to learn more and push ourselves to the outer limits of digital literacy. I say we come out of those comfort zones and learn as much as we can.

How to Think Before You Speak.

 
 
Think before you speak! This age-old adage reminds us that speaking first and thinking secondcan get us into bother, be it in relationships, or even in our own opinion of ourselves. Indeed, the words we speak don’t just cause a reaction in the here and now. They can also influence how you think and how your future unfolds.
 
In this post, we will look at the reasons why you should think before you speak and the benefits you can get from taking that bit longer to blurt out what first springs to mind.
 
Why should you think before you speak?
 
As already alluded to, there are a number of reasons why we should reason on an answer before we elicit what we are thinking. Here, we outline 3 reasons why thinking before you speak is important:
 
Prevent regret
 
The Greek saying goes that ‘one word spoken in anger may spoil and entire life’. Similarly, a Senegalese proverb argues that ‘to spend the night in anger is better than to spend it repenting’.
 
Anyone who has ever sent an angry email in the heat of the moment will know the value of these words. Whilst writing an angry text or email can be therapeutic, it’s always worth sitting on it until our hot head has cooled and we can see more clearly.
 
Getting angry at someone we love, at a friend, or at a colleague is only likely to lead to regret. If we get angry at loved ones, we feel bad, at friends, we might lose their trust, and at a colleague, we might miss out on future opportunities by losing credibility. By thinking before we speak, we can increase our chances of steering clear of feelings of regret.
 
Improve your relationships (near and far)
 
It’s not just when we feel angry that we need to be careful. As our experiences of the world around us feel like life is passing by ever faster, it can be tempting to rush responses to messages, be they at work or to family.
 
Unfortunately, written text is much less nuanced than speech and a short reply sent with a light-hearted tone in mind could easily be read as a curt, cold or irritable shut down.
 
An off-and comment blurted out without thinking can be just as damaging to relationships as a misread text. If we don’t take the time and care to listen to what others are really telling us, we can either say the wrong thing or miss what is behind what’s being said. This means it is always important to be careful about how we respond to people, think about what they are saying, and respond with care.
 
Control your mind and future
 
What we say affects how we think about ourselves and the world around us. The Stanford University Professor of Psychology, Neuroscience, and symbolic systems argues this is because our subconscious minds interpret what we say, internally or externally, literally. The constant use of negative words to ourselves or others will see an altered mindset linked to the words, be they bitter, angry, judgemental, or negative.
 
On the flip side of this, research shows positive thinking can have beneficial impacts on your skills. This makes it all the more important to think before you speak, to prevent feelings of regret, improve your relationships with others, and help you keep your mind positive to open up doors for future opportunities.
 
Top tips on how to think before you speak
 
Now you know a few reasons why it is important, it’s a good idea to get to grips with how to ensure you do this. Here, we outline some handy questions to have in your mind when it comes to staying on top of thinking before speaking that make up the THANKS method to think before you speak, which breaks down as follows:
  • True
  • Helpful
  • Affirming
  • Necessary
  • Kind
  • Sincere
 
If we turn these words that make up the THANKS acronym into questions we answer before we speak, we have a quick and easy method to answer any question thoughtfully.
 
Are you going to say something that is true?
 
If we want people to trust us and value our opinion, we want to be clear about where we have gathered our information from and ensure we know what we say is true before we say it. Take the time to understand your own judgements and misjudgements.
 
Are you going to say something helpful?
 
Is what you are saying going to beneficial in some way to the person you are speaking to? A hurtful comment will not make it past this stage – helping to prevent regret.
 
Are you going to say something that is affirming for the person you are speaking to?
 
Will your words be relatable to the other person? Will they help them to empathize? Will they be inspiring for them? If you are not going to get some buy-in from the person with what you say, it’s worth giving it some more thought.
 
Are you going to say something necessary?
 
Everyone’s been trapped in a conversation they have no interest in or listening to office chat that is meaningless and off-putting. By confirming that what you plan to say is going to be useful in some way, you can prevent being the one accidentally doing this.
 
Are you going to say something kind?
 
Negative comments, be they about yourself or others, foster a negative mindset. ‘If you haven’t got something nice to say, don’t say it’, just like your parents always told you.
 
Are you going to say something that is sincere?
 
Finally, make sure you mean what you say. It’s easy to tell if someone is being fake so a final sincerity check will help you make sure you mean what you say.
 
Thinking before you speak can ensure you steer clear of regret, improve your relationships, and help you control your mind in a way that fosters a beneficial future. Try using the THANKS method to help you think before you speak and you’ll soon reap the rewards of thoughtful speaking.

The day to day grind of working in an office can lead one to think that their experience is the norm. However, having a manager that monitors everything and a lack of freedom at work can harm both your performance and well-being. In this post, we explore the 4 signs that you have a micromanaging boss and what you can do to deal with them.
 
What does it mean to micromanage?
 
The practice of micromanagement isn’t restricted to the workplace. However, this is where micromanagers are often found.
 
Micromanagement refers to exerting excessive control over a person or a situation. This can occur within a social context, at work, or even in relationships. An obsession over the minute detail over what someone is doing, rather than looking at the bigger picture is a key characteristic of someone who micromanages.
 
Sometimes, micromanagement can take on a bullying persona where one person attempts to completely control and influence the actions and behavior of another. If this sounds all too familiar, then it may be that your boss is micromanaging you.
 
In the next section, we look at some of the familiar traits of a micromanager in the workplace.
 
4 signs that your boss is micromanaging you
 
1. Your freedom is restricted
 
Do you feel like your boss is constantly looking over your shoulder? Or that you have to run everything (even small things) by them first? Feeling a lack of freedom in your job is a sure sign that you have a micromanaging boss.
 
Good managers trust their staff, as they recognize that they are qualified for the role they are undertaking. A boss that is partial to micromanagement does not feel this trust and doesn’t allow their employees to make decisions for themselves.
 
Autonomy at work is an important means of keeping you interested in your job as it gives you room to be creative. Feeling trusted to make decisions is also essential in a work environment to ensure you feel valued and empowered.
 
2. Your boss is reluctant to give you training
 
Another indication that you have a micromanaging boss is if they’re reluctant for you to undertake any training or development opportunities. This comes from the fear that through upskilling their staff, they will decrease their own value and importance. This aspect of being micromanaged can feel particularly restrictive as it makes it difficult to progress in your career.
 
So, if you’ve noticed your manager won’t share their knowledge with you or brushes over training opportunities, it is likely they are guilty of micromanaging.
 
3. They can’t see the big picture
 
Part of being a good manager comes from being able to see the bigger picture and trusting that their employees have their individual tasks in hand.
 
A micromanager, however, is unable to do this. They are obsessed with the minute detail within projects. This means that instead of being free to just ‘get on with it’ you’re constantly forced to update your boss on what you’re doing.
 
This could be in the form of regular reports, constant team meetings to feedback on progress, or a persistent email thread that feels incredibly unproductive. It can feel like you spend most of your time updating your boss on what you’re doing rather than actually doing the work itself.
 
If this sounds like your experience, then it’s likely your boss is micromanaging the work you do.
 
4. They don’t like to delegate
 
Another trait of a micromanaging boss is that they don’t like to delegate. All of the points above ring true of a person who lacks faith in others, and this aspect of micromanagement is no different.
 
A micromanaging manager will often refuse to pass on important tasks to their team as they feel they are the only ones qualified to undertake them. This can lead to an overwhelming workload for them, and a feeling of discontent amongst other team members.
 
Difficulties in delegating can also lead to unnecessary delays and projects that feel like they are never-ending.
 
How to deal with a micromanaging boss?
 
Unsurprisingly, showing a lack of faith in the team, a refusal to help team members develop, and the refusal to delegate leads to an unsatisfactory work life for those under the leadership of a micromanager. However, it doesn’t have to be like this. Here are some tips on how to deal with your micromanaging boss.
 
1. Be honest
 
It can seem daunting to criticize the behavior of your manager. However, it may be that they don’t realize the impact that their micromanaging is having.
 
Next time you have a one-to-one scheduled, prepare what you want to say to your manager and write down some examples of when their micromanaging has gone too far. Highlight how their managing style is impacting on your ability to do your job and your well-being at work. An open and honest conversation can feel scary beforehand, but the benefits are likely to be well worth it.
 
2. Be one step ahead of them
 
If you’ve been working under a micromanager for a while, you can no doubt anticipate when and what they are planning to ask you. By anticipating this beforehand you can provide the answers to their questions before they have the chance to breathe over your shoulder.
 
This could be in the form of an email at the start or end of the week to update them on any progress. In showing them that you’re fully on top of things, it may give them the confidence to give you the space you need.

Handling a micromanaging boss can feel like a job in itself. It can mean that you feel incredibly restricted in your work and affect your happiness in your job.
 
Opening up to your manager that their managing style is not working for you can feel like a huge hurdle to jump over. However, it can lead to a much-needed discussion around how you can best work together to make the work environment a happy and productive place.

FOBO: The Reason You Struggle with Making Decisions and How to Overcome It.

I’m sure that you have all heard of Fomo, or the ‘fear of missing out’, but have you heard about the ‘fear of better options’ (Fobo)? Fobo is consuming many of our thought patterns and affecting our behavior for the worst. The more anxious sister of Fomo, Fobo is attributed as the reason why some of us struggle to make even the simplest of decisions.

In this post, we take a closer look at the reasons behind Fobo. We will also give you some helpful steps to overcome the difficulties you may be having with making decisions.

What Is Fobo?

The freedom of choice we have access to in the modern world is indeed a privilege. However, with so many things to choose from, it can lead us to make no decisions at all. This is what the fear of better options relates to. In other words, when we are faced with a multitude of options, the fear of missing out on the best one leads us to a state of indecision.

The term Fobo was coined by the US venture capitalist Patrick McGinnis, who also came up with the term Fomo. According to McGinnis, Fobo is the “coping mechanism” we use to deal with the fear of making the wrong decision in case if “something better comes along”. However, the persistence of Fobo in our lives can lead to not only a general dissatisfaction in our own life, but also cause our friends, family, and colleagues to despair with us also.

McGinnis defines Fobo as being an “affliction of affluence” and is, therefore, restricted to the privileged who have the benefit of power and money to give them so many options. This is an affliction, therefore, that can also be used by large corporations, as well as individuals, as a justification for “not doing something”.

Discussion around the demotivating power of choice is not entirely new. Iyengar and Lepper’s study in 2000 concluded that individuals who had fewer options derived greater satisfaction from the decisions they made.

The concept of ‘maximizers’ and ‘satisficers’ has also been a popular phenomenon in psychology when discussing individuals’ approaches to decision making. ‘Maximizers’ are those that base their decisions on the maximum benefit later on. Whereas ‘satisficers’ settle for a decision based on more modest criteria (and less research).

The lack of commitment that maximizers show to their decisions, according to Joyce Erlinger from Florida State University, makes them less satisfied with their choices in the long term.

How to Overcome Fobo?
If the concept of Fobo is ringing true for you, then fear not. There are some steps you can take to improve your decision making power and overcome the constant fear of what better options are waiting for you around the corner. Here are some tips to set you in the right direction:
1. Recognize that you can never be aware of all your options
While it is normal to want to select the best option in all areas of your life, it is helpful to recognize that it’s impossible to examine all of the potential options available. Acknowledging this fact is a key part of beginning your journey to be released from the restraint of Fobo. It can also be beneficial to acknowledge that there may be multiple ‘best’ options. So, in making a decision, you’re one step closer to getting one of those.

2. Be clear about what it is you want
Fobo can lead to hours of research and deliberation. This results in a spiral of indecision, confusion and, ultimately, frustration. To overcome this, try making a set of clear criteria of what you want to get out of your decision. Make sure you restrict yourself to 3 or 4 criteria. Once you have found those criteria in an option, go for it.
3. Be honest with yourself
McGinnis states that an element of Fobo can derive from resistance to, or fear of, saying no to something. We may delay our decision by giving a tentative ‘maybe’ to an option which, when you’re honest with yourself, you know is not right for you. To prevent delaying the negative, saying no immediately can prevent the escalation of Fobo.
4. Set yourself a time limit
Your indecisiveness does not only affects your own experiences, but it can also influence those around you. Waiting for a decision can be a stressful time for others. Not to mention putting you in the bad books with those closest to you. Setting yourself a time limit to make a decision can be an effective way to improve your decision-making ability, and lead to greater satisfaction with your choices.

For instance, you’ve been given a few options for a Friday night but are worried about choosing the best option. In this instance, giving yourself a time limit of Wednesday to decide ensures that you can enjoy your weekend and prevent annoying your friends.
Final Thoughts

Having a fear of better options (Fobo) can have serious effects on your ability to enjoy your life. Never making a decision may result in you missing out on fun opportunities or important life chances. Fortunately, it is possible to tackle this obsession with finding perfection by following our simple steps.

Self-discipline is one thing we all struggle with. From eating “just one more” doughnut to waking up late every morning. It is all a matter of how self-disciplined we are, and it can be applied to all fields of life.

Some people like to live their lives by the book, and they are natural talents when it comes to self-discipline. But for the rest of us, it is like a skill. As such, it is something that we can learn and strive to master from early childhood.

Why Do We Need Self-Discipline?
The problem is, even though we have been introduced to the concept of self-discipline from early childhood, if you are not ready to fully commit to it, it does not get much easier with age. When we were kids, our mothers did not allow us to eat sweets before lunch. As adults, we can eat whatever we want whenever, but that does not mean we should. So instead of having a parent who will hide all the candies, now we have to hide them from ourselves.

Power of will, self-control, you can call it whatever you like, it is one of the key features of every successful person. The good news is that it can be taught. Even if you were not so great with it as a child or teen, it is never too late. Not only can you take over control of your life, but you can also learn how to be, and stay, self-disciplined.

1. Set Your Goals


What are your goals? Do you want to eat better, sleep more, study harder, run faster, or be more productive at work? You have to know where you are going and what you want first. Only then can you create a list of things you need to do in order to reach your goal. It is all based on practice and developing healthy habits.

In the beginning, it is never going to be easy. However, after a while, your established routine is not going to be so annoying. In fact, it is going to become something you will do without thinking too much about it. Start writing a weekly planner and make a schedule which you will follow.
2. Acknowledge Your Weaknesses
Whether it is a slice of pizza at 11 PM, binge-watching, or procrastinating your work tasks, keep it real and be aware of your weaknesses. This is the only way to overcome them. Stop making excuses and start spending your time more wisely.

Bad habits are so tempting, and it is so easy to cheat. But think about the time and energy you are wasting. Instead of ordering fast food, put that money away and save it for travelling. Find something good to replace your unhealthy cravings.

3. Baby Steps
Many people tend to start some big changes from Monday or next week. But the thing is, you should not introduce all the changes at once. This is because you can not successfully turn your entire life upside down in one day.

Start with those changes that are doable. Slowly, make adjustments without putting too much pressure on yourself. Then gradually introduce new rituals or tasks. Eventually, you will get the result you wanted. There are no shortcuts. Self-discipline is like a learning process. Therefore, if you want to pass it, you have to go through all the stages.
4. Healthy Habits


Regardless of what your goals are, you should not forget about two essential things, sleeping and eating well. These two are the base, the core of self-discipline. So if you are not eating healthy or sleeping enough, you cannot consider yourself for a self-disciplined person.

These two are especially important for people who are trying to lose weight. But also in general, poor sleeping habits can trigger an eating disorder, insomnia, REM sleep behaviour disorder, and plenty of other things that will get on your way.
5. The Power of Will
It is all in your head. You are your biggest competitor. Likewise, the only boundaries that exist are the ones in your head. If you believe that you can not do this or that, then you probably are not going to be able to do it.

This willpower is based on our beliefs. As a result, it can either hinder our success or enhance it, depending on our inner beliefs. This can be tricky. For start, it has a lot to do with self-esteem, rational thinking, and personal subconscious obstacles.

6. Plan “B”
In general, it is always good to have a backup plan. But in situations like this, when you are trying so hard to change yourself, any small failure can be discouraging. That is why it is always good to have a plan B.

If you know that you are going to be in a tempting situation, think in advance. Put together ideas on how to stay in your lane, without breaking your rules. This type of strategy is something that psychologists like to call implementation intentions.
7. Treat Yourself
It is good to have small milestones and to reward yourself to boost your motivation. But that reward should not consist of things you are fighting against. For example, junk food, or playing video games the entire night. An idea of a reward waiting for you will give you the strength to continue. This is because a reward system is a powerful tool for success, and it will keep you focused on your goal.

People are creatures of habit, and somehow we tend to love the bad ones, especially. However, we should not allow our habits to control us. I think the written language is underrated. Speaking is excellent, but well-written statements can get the point across even better at times.
 
I call myself a writer, but boy, do I have a lot to learn. Every day of my life, I do learn new things about written language. Sometimes, I get frustrated during this learning process, but later on, I appreciate the improvements that have stuck with me, believe it or not, even the insults. But instead of insults, teaching can help us learn more without frustration.
 
Improving written language skills
 
Improving language skills in writing can really help locate your voice, your work, and being taken seriously. That’s right, good writing skills also carry respect. As for those who are learning a second language, written language skills are a must. There are several ways we can do this.
 
Your writing can always improve
 
1. Use the dash
 
Everyone’s familiar with commas, so much so that they over-use them all the time. There’s even an epidemic of comma splicing that makes some people cringe. This is where using dashes can come in handy – you will really appreciate how they work.
 
See, I just used one there, and it broke away a bit from the use of too many commas. Practice using the dash to change it up a little bit.
 
2. Write straight through
 
The first draft is so important. While so many people try to write and rewrite as they go, it’s really better to write straight through, mistakes, senseless sentences and all.
 
The reason you should write up the draft all the way first is to keep the flow. When you stop to correct things, you lose a bit of the atmosphere of what you’re writing, and you can even forget the larger picture of your written work.
 
Improving written language sometimes means writing bad material. Within this bad material, there is a story, a speech, or an essay, but at first, it must be a rough draft. After the first draft is completed, you can use your skills to improve your work.
 
3. Use an outline
 
Writing well sometimes requires creating an outline of your topic. In fact, doing this can greatly improve your writing skills over time. This is because an outline helps keep your intricate ideas in order within the body of the basic concept of your work.
 
Even though creating an outline may sound like something elementary, it can be used by writers of all ages to produce successful projects.
 
4. Read… and read some more
 
Have you truly ever connected the ability to write well with reading? Most people have made this connection, but for those who haven’t, this will be a game-changer. Reading many books, and in a variety of genres will help you develop your own voice.
 
When you’re trying to improve your written language skills, having a memory of the flow of a few good books will give you a flow of your own. Just make sure you don’t accidentally copy any material from your head. Hey, I’ve done this before.
 
5. Learn sentence geography
 
There are ways of writing which can draw attention to a certain part of a sentence. It’s about placement, emphasis, and mood. Yes, all aspects of a sentence are important, but there’s almost always a special part of the sentence that hooks the reader….not just the piece of work itself.
 
Learning sentence geography is like using psychological placement instead of something like “all caps” to draw attention to certain words. There are a number of ways to do this such as using unusual adjectives or verbs. The point is to help the reader experience the written word instead of just read.
 
6. Research is important
 
I cannot stress enough about how important it is to research certain topics, especially if you know little about them. Without research your writing, well, it will basically be filled with fluff instead of facts.
 
Fluff is repeating the information you do know or vague statements instead of using new factual information. So avoiding this, doing proper research will greatly improve your writing.
 
7. Try different genres
 
Another way to improving written skills is to expand. Most people have an area that they either love, or feel is easier for them to create within, but writing in various genres does something magical.
 
If you’re used to writing non-fictional memoirs, then you should try poetry, fiction, and smaller projects like descriptions and website content. There are many areas where writing is needed, and it’s smart to delve into as many of these areas as possible.
 
8. Write every day
 
If writing isn’t necessarily your job, then you’re probably not writing every day. A great way to improve your written language skills is to write like it’s your job. It doesn’t matter what type of writing you do as long as you’re picking up the pen, or the keyboard and putting words together.
 
Here’s a tip: set a number of words per day and make sure you write at least that many words each day. Then, maybe you can increase the number of words as you go, which will help even more.
 
9. Join a writing group
 
Writing workshops may seem intimidating, but sharing your ideas with other writers can help you see your work through other minds. You can bounce ideas off others getting well-needed critique to help you improve.
 
Being around others can also boost your morale and confidence giving you the courage to pursue the writing project or job you need to finish.
 
10. Have a good editor
 
Whether you work with a professional editor, or you work with a friend who is a more seasoned writer, who is also delving into editing, let your work be ruthlessly edited. If you don’t let your work be closely examined, critiqued, and torn apart, you will never learn your weak points in the written language.
 
Yes, you may be skilled, but you also have shortcomings like everyone else. An editor will find these shortcomings for you and show you what needs to be changed.
 
11. Simplify and balance
 
Sometimes, simple is better. Beginning writers and sometimes those who’ve been writing for a long time use embellishment or too many adjectives. Sometimes writers even use sentences that are much too long just to get points across.
 
The truth is, breaking down these sentences, and sometimes using simpler words can work much better. On the other hand, remember to refrain from using only short sentences. A good idea would be to balance sentence lengths, which can not only provide the best information but can keep the audience interested, thus make them read more.
 
12. Look at old work
 
They say living in the past is a bad thing, but in this case, it can improve your writing skills. By looking at your old work, you can see the differences between how you write now and how your skills faired in the past.
 
You can do so many things with this practice – you can see how you’ve improved, and you can build your confidence. If you have lots of old work, you should realize, you’ve come far in the writing world.
 
13. Teaching material
 
If learning to improve the basics of writing is what you need, then sometimes written material is the best option. The OWLS 2 Assessment helps teach the basics of the written language with oral and written comprehension scales. This material is actually created for ages 3-21 but can be used by anyone interested in learning the basics of language.
 
Becoming better with the written language
 
Although getting your point across by speaking may be easier for some people, the written language, for others, is the only way to communicate correctly. Whether this is the case, you’re a writer, or you’re just learning a language for the first time, practicing these steps and others, will help you greatly improve.
 
It doesn’t have to be complicated. So, dig in and learn all you can about your written language skills.

What Is Projection Bias and How to Avoid It at Work

What you believe is true and what is actually true may not be the same thing, and this can lead us to projection bias.
 
When you’re working on an important project or just working with others, it’s important to understand other people are different from ourselves. If we are focused on something which means a lot to us, it’s easy to assume it will be just as important to others.
 
This can lead us to overlook the considerations and priorities of others. When this happens, it makes it very difficult to work with others as you can lose their interest or simply annoy them. This is called projection bias and it is vital to understand it to be able to mitigate its effects and work efficiently as a team.
 
What Is Projection Bias?
 
Projection Bias is the belief that others have the same priorities, attitudes or beliefs as we do. This is true however similar we are to the other person, as what we believe to be important, we consider to be important to others.
 
We are all inclined to believe our ideas are the best, especially if we have certain experiences others don’t. However, it is important to understand projection bias so that we can negate its negative impact.
 
Projection bias occurs when we are too caught up in our own beliefs and desires that we don’t understand the other person. Projection bias is linked to consensus bias which leads us to believe that others think like us and will agree with us. When suffering from projection bias, we ignore the thoughts of others because they don’t align with our own.
 
Imagine you and your team have been given an important project. You consider the first step to take on some market research to understand your consumer. You might believe this to be the most obvious and successful first step.
 
However, your coworker might believe the first step is to understand the product in order to market it effectively. This causes tension because you don’t agree and you might dismiss your coworker’s idea.
 
Why Does Projection Bias Happen?
 
When we are experienced, we tend to overestimate the regularity of our own ideas and best practices. We also have a certain idea of our own future success based on our previous successes.
 
This can make it difficult to empathize with others who may not share our expertise. As such, we use our current state as an anchor point for our decisions rather than being open-minded to the opinions of others.
 
How to Avoid Projection Bias
 
Recognize It
 
When you are aware of your own expertise in an area, this is where it might affect us most. The first step in avoiding projection bias is recognizing you may be suffering from it.
 
Recognize the areas in which you have particular strengths. When faced with a situation where you are working with others in this area, note that the bias might occur here.
 
Keep Your Mind Open
 
Secondly, try to stay open-minded. Just because you have experience in a certain area does not mean that your methods are perfect. Don’t let your own expertise narrow your thinking, because best practice is constantly changing.
 
Stay open to ideas that differ from your own and remember that others might not necessarily think the way you do. We are all capable of learning and adapting our work to improve.
 
When in a team situation, listen to others and respect what you hear.
 
You may not agree with them, but allow them to speak and consider their views. Listening is the key to making others feel respected. You cannot demand respect from others if you don’t give it to them. Give others time to explain their ideas and reasons behind them.
 
You might actually find yourself agreeing with their thought process, even if you don’t agree with the idea. When you don’t agree, it is okay to be critical and to ask pointed questions. This allows you to stretch your thinking but also helps others to grow.
 
Maintain an open dialogue and refrain from shutting down a conversation because you don’t agree. Building on each other’s ideas can be greatly beneficial both within a team but also in the final product.
 
Consider a collaboration of methods to attack the problem from many different angles. By formulating a holistic approach, you may find yourself working faster and to a higher standard.
 
Final Words
 
When making important decisions or working on big projects, we are all guilty of failed decision making. There are a number of biases that can affect us on a daily basis. It is important to recognize what these biases are and that we are not immune to them.
 
Identifying where we might be affected by projection bias is the first step in ensuring it does not impact on our work. It might take a little practice to get it right at first, but after time you will find yourself to be much more open to others. Working on yourself is the first step to working well with others.

Are you effectively leading people or not using the right leadership styles when needed?
 
You can probably think back to certain leaders in your life and the leadership styles they used. An effective leader can manage people effortlessly without having to be overbearing or ruthless. The best leaders are the ones you don’t even notice leading but can motivate and improve everyone around them.
 
Leadership is the ability to get amazing achievements from ordinary people. If this is the leader you would like to be – in any area of life – it helps to learn different leadership styles. This article will look at 4 styles of leadership and examples for where to use them.
 
What Are Some Key Leadership Styles?
 
As a leader, your job is to get things done by leading others to success. This can be on the grand stage of the leader of a country, down to running a volunteer charity. Whatever type of influence you have, leadership is all about getting the best out of others to accomplish a goal or task.
 
Your leadership style will depend on a few variables, such as the team you are working with or specific people within that team. A good leader can recognize when a certain style is needed and will pick the right one depending on the specific end goal. There are many styles of leadership, but here are a few of the best to help accomplish this.
 
1. The Structural Leadership Style
 
This style of leadership is a very straightforward style. Everything is laid out in black in white. Everyone knows what needs doing, why it needs to be done, and when it needs to be done by. This style of leadership is one that places more importance on yourself, and it’s important to recognize this.
 
You are the one in charge of picking the people, assigning them to the various tasks, and managing them with the expectation they will produce great work. The main responsibility falls on your shoulders with this style as you are the one calling all the shots. You do not need any input from other people and what you say, goes.
 
You would use this leadership style when team members need to be rewarded or disciplined. You would also use this style when you have a team that is already motivated, full of experts, and needs little direction. You don’t want to use the structural leadership style all the time, as it can lead to team members feeling overwhelmed. This style works best in a crunch time scenario.
 
2. The Participative Style Of Leadership
 
This style is when you put your team first. When you’re leading people this way, it shows that you really care about them. When you lead this way, you build more bonds and friendships. There is a focus on spending time with the team members and showing that you care. The best way to use this style of leadership is to treat your team members the same way you would treat a family member.
 
There is no task-master mentality here, and the leadership is all about respect. This creates a feeling of belonging for the people you lead and you tend to get better results from them this way. They get more of a feeling of ownership with what they are working on as they feel more connected and valued. Decisions are made by consensus and members have more input, hence being called participative.
 
You would use the participative leadership style when you need new ideas and fresh perspectives. It is also good to use it during times of stress and when team members are feeling overwhelmed. They will feel heard and listened to, and it helps to build and maintain trust.
 
3. The Servant Style
 
The servant style is taking the participative style to the next level. With this style of leadership, you serve the role of serving your team. The easiest way to approach this style is to treat others how you want to be treated aka managing others the way you want to be managed.
 
You make sure that everyone understands their jobs fully and provide any needed tools. This style helps to bring out the peak performance of your team members. This style may be the most rewarding for them as they feel catered to and appreciated. They are listened to and their ideas matter.
 
An example of when to use the servant style is if you find yourself with a diverse team. This would be a team where you need to personalize your management for each member. You may also want to consider this leadership style if you are starting out somewhere new or with a new team. This will help you build trust, respect, and loyalty.
 
You may not want to use the servant style for too long, however, as it may lead to a lack of direction for the team. It also may lead to a lack of authority and your team ending up running the show.
 
4. The Freedom Style
 
This is a style of leadership that requires a lot of faith in your team. With this style, you give your team a task and then basically stay out of the way. You will chime in only when needed. Your role here is to point the team in the right direction and then leave it up to them.
 
You obviously need the utmost confidence in your team, but if you’ve led them well up to this point, they should be able to thrive. This style is not recommended if you are just starting out in leading people. You need a great track record showing your ability to get results out of people. You also need a lot of expertise and a highly skilled team that doesn’t need much supervision.
 
This is an approach taken by the Pixar company: give a mediocre idea to a strong team and they will find a way to make it great.
Final Thoughts
 
There isn’t one best leadership style, as these 4 different ones are valuable in their own way. The effective leader is not the one who just intimately knows different styles of leadership but knows when to use them at the right time. Whether you use the freedom, servant, participative, or structural leadership style, you ultimately will know how to get the very best out of people.

Technically speaking, burnout implies the cessation of operation of a jet or a rocket engine. Projecting this definition onto the office landscape, job burnout closely relates to work stress. Indeed the term ‘burnout’ in this context was first introduced by Freudenberger (1974). He pointed to the occupational hazards professionals are exposed to when working under difficult conditions.

If you feel that you cannot relate to most of these statements, it’s probably time to put yourself on pause. Then you can reconsider your work routine and restore work-life balance.
 
Remember that once burnout creeps into your life, it is a sign you are in need of drastic change. Take it as the time to take a break.

Introverts feel overwhelmed working in crowded environments, so conventional business ideas will probably not work for them.
 
If you’re anything like me, you probably dislike crowded working environments. You could be the person who just doesn’t like crowds, or you could actually be an introvert. Most introverts work better in small groups or even better, alone. For the introvert, this allows the imagination to flow freely, helping to integrate a few non-conventional ideas.
 
Business is not only for extroverts
 
Most people see the entrepreneur as a talkative person who loves to be around others. This is probably because of the misconception that entrepreneurs must have started their businesses only by the networking of others. They may also think that the more popular you are with people, the more successful you will be at starting your own business.
 
And yes, this is a misconception for sure. The introvert is just as likely to start their own business as the extrovert, there just might be a few different options for them.
 
Here are several business ideas for introverts:
 
1. The blogger
 
Of course, the first thing that comes to my mind is the blogger. That’s probably because it’s what I do myself. Blogging is a wonderful way for the introvert to make a successful business, as long as they find the right niche which fits their style of writing and voice. While it’s not always easy to do this, it allows them to open up a bit by relating and connecting with their readers.
2. House cleaning
 
I know many women who make their living cleaning houses for others, others who are busy working demanding jobs and have no time for cleaning, or maybe for those who can afford to pay someone to do the job. For whatever reason, house cleaning can be a lucrative job for introverts because it requires few exchanges with the client.
 
3. Bakers or caterers
 
As far as business goes, this idea for the introvert takes the cake. Hey, I had to throw in a joke there for good measure. I am acquainted with a lady who catered to many people before finally landing a large contract to work in a factory’s cafeteria. Although I wouldn’t call her too introverted, her catering idea is great for those who don’t want to be in a crowded environment.
 
Introverts can become bakers or caterers, and if the business starts to grow too fast or in too many crowded areas, they can always scale back.
 
4. Photo restoration
 
What better business idea than to become a restorer of old photos. This job can be extremely interesting whereas you get to view any type of old image and also spend minimal time around others. In fact, your customers can simply drop off their photos and come back at a set time. It’s among those business ideas that perfectly suit the introverts.
 
5. Sell online goods (Etsy)
 
If you have many craft ideas in mind, especially things you’ve never seen anywhere before, now’s the time to spread those introverted wings and create. Yes, one great business idea for you as an introvert is to sell your own goods. This can be anything from homemade jams to some trending new accessory. Your imagination is your drawing board, and there’s really no limit to where you can go with this.
 
6. Ebook author
 
Okay, so I wrote a book about 6 years ago, and guess what, I still get royalties. Now, mind you, I don’t get a great amount, but let’s just say each month’s royalty pays the utility bill. And it didn’t start out this way. At first, the royalties paid much more than a few bills.
 
So, as an introvert, investing in more than one book could possibly set you up for a career in ebook writing. I’ve seen it done before. Now, there’s just one catch. You have to know how to write. Just throwing that in there.
 
7. Artist
 
Painting, drawing, and sculpting are interesting to both extroverts and introverts. That’s why it’s a choice business idea for an introvert or anyone who wishes to limit human contact. In fact, painting takes lots of time alone, and time to experience the emotion behind what they’re creating. Whatever form of art it may be, introverts usually do really well in that area.
 
8. Lawn maintenance
 
There are so many people who hate to mow their lawn much less trim hedges or maintain flower beds. But guess what! There are plenty of opportunities for jobs like this, and they suit the introvert just fine. Just as the businesses listed above, lawn maintenance requires little interaction with the customer. You also have plenty of time to enjoy the outdoors and clear your mind.
 
9. The virtual assistant
 
If you’d rather stay indoors, there are a few options there as well. Being a virtual assistant may be the best choice for introverts who can work a bit with the client and some time alone as well.
 
If you’re wondering what the virtual assistants can do, well there are many things. They can take calls for you, provide content for websites, schedule appointments, and they can even create business document templates which can help the employer create faster powerpoint presentations and other marketing material. There are many more things a virtual assistant can do, but the most important, they can enjoy lots and lots of alone time.
 
10. Phone repairs and accessories
 
Since everyone seems to have a smartphone, it stands to reason that at some point, phones break. Here’s another opportunity for the introverted yet innovative mind. You can make a living not only repairing phones but also selling accessories to protect phones.
 
It may seem as though selling these accessories would hurt the repair part of your business, but not to worry. There are many other accessories as well such as screen protectors, cases, designer cases, and even bling to individualize the way the phone appears.
Business ideas like these will help introverts succeed
 
Just because you rather not be around many people, doesn’t mean you won’t fulfill your dreams, whatever that may be. It just means that your path will be different, and even more exciting in certain ways. An introvert’s potential is endless. This is only a short list of the many career choices available to the introvert. So, if you’re introverted, be proud. There’s also a successful future for you as well.

Mastering your conversation skills may first bring to mind improving how you speak. However, the art of a good conversation involves excellent listening skills. We can get so wrapped up in what we plan to say in our conversations that we lose our listening skills. As a result, we don’t pay attention to what the other person is saying.
 
Psychologists Carl Rogers and Richard Farson pioneered the concept of active listening. This is where you are fully focused on what the other person is saying.
 
In addition, you allow them the time to say their piece without interrupting to offer advice. While it may feel like there are some silences, these are important to allow your companion to say what they need to say. This demonstrates that you are really listening to them.
 
Respond appropriately
 
When you practice active listening, there needs to be an appropriate response when the other person has finished speaking. Another important conversation skill is the ability to summarise what you have heard.
 
This serves to reaffirm what the other person has said. Thus showing them that you listened and understand. Demonstrate you are interested in what they have to say by actively listening. Then you can be fully engaged in the conversation.
Ask questions
 
We have all been subjected to a one-sided conversation in our time. Experiencing someone purely talk about themselves can be frustrating. Our self-esteem is knocked if we feel that what we say is not valued. An excellent conversation skill to improve is the art of asking questions.
 
While we may not like to admit it, talking about ourselves is enjoyable. Therefore, asking the other person questions about what they are saying is a key way to ensure that you have a conversation to remember.
 
Find some similarities
 
Of course, you don’t want the conversation to be one-sided. A conversation is a two-way street after all. A good conversation skill to put to work which will get your own experiences and ideas into the conversation is to find a similarity between yourself and the person you are speaking with.
 
Finding common ground will help the conversation flow. It also won’t be surprising to hear that we generally like people more when they are similar to us. So this trick will help build relationships with both friends and work colleagues.
 
Body language
 
It isn’t just what we say that gets a good conversation going. It’s how we use non-verbal communication that is also a key conversation skill. Maintaining good eye contact is difficult.
 
However, it lets someone know you are engaged in the conversation. Facing someone as they speak is also a good way of letting them know they have your full attention.
Use names
 
Use a person’s name when you talk to them. You often see politicians do this. They create a powerful bond with the listener. This is because we intrinsically link an individual’s identity with their name.
 
For this reason, using a person’s name (and ensuring you say it correctly) is a good conversational skill to master. Especially when you have just met someone.
 
Saying their name will help someone feel endeared to you. You are attempting to capture their attention. Research has highlighted the importance of using names in our interactions. It demonstrates that using a person’s name can mean that they are more likely to help you and make a purchase from you.
 
Offer a compliment
 
It might sound cheesy, but complimenting someone is a great way to keep the conversation going. Especially if you feel like it is drawing to a close. Not only will it make the recipient feel good about themselves, but it will also open the door for another topic of conversation to continue.
 
Offering a compliment is also a great conversation starter. Particularly if you are searching for something to kick off the conversation.
 
There is nothing wrong with small talk
 
While some find small talk a bore, it is often the way to get into more fulfilling and deeper conversations. Small talk is an important conversation skill. It gets the conversation started. In fact, in some situations, it is incredibly useful.
 
For example, there is a range of topics that are common ground for many people. Just think of the weather, asking someone what they have done today, or commenting on an event you are both at.

Even if you are armed with passion, facts, and the will to argue your position to the death. But how can you win an argument and get someone to shift their position if everyone likes to be right?
 
How to Win an Argument Using Science
 
In this post, we will take you through 7 science-based hacks. These will give you the skills you need to know how to win an argument. Changing the way people think is never easy. However, using these scientific hacks, you’ll stand a better chance of winning over even the most argumentative of souls.
 
Be respectful
 
Even if you think someone’s opinion is ludicrous, you are not going to win someone over to your way of thinking. Especially if you go straight in mocking their beliefs. Even if you don’t, try to demonstrate that you respect their opinion. Then, you are more likely to make them feel their self-worth validated.
 
Use phrases like:
“I think you’re definitely right”
“I understand where you’re coming from”
 
Or anything else to make them feel validated will get you a long way. Interestingly, when someone feels validated, they tend to be more willing to listen to information that challenges their beliefs.
Get them to explain their position
 
Ironically, when someone has to explain their beliefs they tend to become less confident about them. Yale University Psychologist F.C. Keil describes this phenomenon as “the illusion of explanatory depth”. This is because by trying to explain why they hold their beliefs, they confront the limitations of their own understanding.
 
Therefore, ask someone to explain their position with non-aggressive and exploratory questions. You’ll find their views are likely to soften and become more malleable.

It is tempting to look up a killer fact to finally sway your friend round to your way of thinking about the world. However, psychological studies have shown that winning an argument is much more emotional than logical.
 
Indeed, people tend to begin with their conclusion then pluck the reasons that support their belief out of thin air. Throwing facts at them is likely to throw them into fight-or-flight mode. Subsequently, you are more likely to close down their receptiveness to different viewpoints.
 
Confidence is key
 
Facts might not be the magic-bullet you hoped for, confidence just might be. A 2013 study found that people are much more likely to listen and be receptive to ideas presented confidently even if they are light on the facts.
 
 
Confidence is used as a proxy for expertise. As a result, the actual content of what is being said plays second fiddle to the way it is being said.
 
Seek to appear scientific
 
In modern societies, people perhaps value the opinions of scientists above all others with very little scepticism. Therefore, present your view in a scientific way. Then people are likely to be more persuaded by your arguments.
 
Why not go the whole hog and use a graph to explain your point? Then you’ll be well on the way to winning people round to your way of thinking.
 
The point to remember is, whatever way you can appear scientific will be of major benefit. Use data and references rather than anecdotes and logic over subjective positions.

‘Social proof’ is where people seek to confirm that a certain behavior or belief is suitable. Psychologist Robert Cialdini defines social proof as copying the actions of others in order to reflect the correct behavior. We particularly copy those people we like.

Examples of social proof include buying a product recommended by a family member. Liking a social media post because all your friends have liked it. Watching a programme because your partner loves it.
Re-frame the debate
 
People with different political beliefs tend to respond more positively to different arguments based on their own moral compasses.
 
The Moral Foundations Theory (MFT) suggests we hold 5 foundational beliefs. For instance, liberals give weight to arguments framed around fairness and protecting people from harm. On the other hand, conservatives value loyalty and authority most highly.
 
So, if you know someone’s political position, shaping your position accordingly is likely to lead to more successful results.
 
Want to Win an Argument? Use Confidence and Rely on Logical Thinking
 
When we disagree with others it is easy to get carried away. We use cheap personal attacks, look to cold facts as a magic remedy, or lose faith in our own position.
 
However, if we want to win an argument and change someone’s position, we are unlikely to be successful in using these methods. This is unless we take a confident, scientific, and tactical approach.
 
Treat people with respect. Have them explore how their ideas work themselves. Use gentle questioning, and re-frame the debate to suit the moral underpinnings of your target. Then you’ll stand the best chance of swaying people to your way of thinking. This is all you need to know in order to win an argument.

The time management matrix is one of the best tools to help you prioritise and get productive.
Productivity is something we all struggle with and we can end up procrastinating even when we’re trying to be productive. It might be that you end up spending too much time on the less important tasks. It might be that you end up giving more attention to a small part of a task than is necessary.
Whatever the problem, there is a solution: the time management matrix. It helps you to figure out what you need to be doing with your time as opposed to what you want to be doing with your time.
By utilising the time management matrix, you will be able to prioritise your work so that you keep on top of everything.

What is the time management matrix?

The time management matrix was popularised by Stephen R. Covey and is based on the theory that our time is spent on a four-quadrant matrix. These quadrants are:
  1. Urgent and Important
  2. Urgent and Not Important
  3. Not Urgent and Important
  4. Not Urgent and Not Important
Each of these quadrants has its own characteristics and should be dealt with differently. Once you know where tasks fit, it will be much easier to use the time management matrix to improve productivity.

Better Performance

By implementing the time management matrix, you will learn how to more effectively manage your time. This is because you will be learning which tasks are important and which tasks just seem important.
You will also be able to spend more time on important, urgent tasks so you can work to a higher standard. This allows us to take more pride in our work and reap more substantial benefits from the time we spend.

More Effective Work

As you begin to use the time management matrix on a regular basis, you will start using your time more effectively.  This also minimises the frustration we can sometimes feel at the end of a busy day when we feel as though nothing has been done.

By categorising tasks according to the time management matrix, we spend more time in the right places. This frees up a lot of extra time to spend on more important things.
When urgent tasks are complete, we lower our stress levels and can enjoy other things. This might be ticking some tasks off the important and non-urgent to do list, or maybe freeing up a little more personal time.

Our day to day lives can be stressful, especially when we feel we are making little progress. Stress can lead to a number of negative side effects on our body. Not only does it negatively affect our mood, but it can be seriously detrimental to our health.
Boosted performance and spending time more effectively has a positive effect on mood and stress which, in turn, benefits our overall health.

The Four Quadrants

The time management matrix splits our time into four quadrants, each with their own characteristics.

1. Urgent and Important


The urgent and important items are those which must be dealt with immediately. Any time you spend on this quadrant is non-optional. Most of these tasks should be reactional and not due to poor planning.
The use of quadrant 2 will significantly minimise these tasks so that you are only acting in this area on an emergency basis.
Examples of tasks which fall into this category are family emergencies or emergency work deadlines.

2. Not Urgent and Important


Not urgent and important tasks are those which do not need your attention right now but should be planned for.  According to Covey, this is the quadrant which we should spend most of our time in. This quadrant allows for long-term achievement of goals and the proper planning of deadlines.
Use of quadrant 2 significantly limits the use of quadrant 1 so that you can reduce your stressand work at your own pace.  When you are aware of deadlines, make sure to properly plan for them. To maintain your health, factor in a little bit of time for exercise or planning healthy meals.
Don’t be fooled by these tasks, as they may seem urgent, but are really only important.
Examples which fall into this category are things like exercise, maintaining relationships, working towards a goal or deadline.

3. Urgent and Not Important


Urgent but not important tasks are those which need to be seriously limited or eliminated altogether. These kinds of tasks usually come from other people who may be asking for help or wasting time in a meeting.
They may also be very simple tasks which take more time than they are worth. These tasks add no value to your day but can still take up a lot of time. To limit these tasks, it is useful to learn how to say no to people in order to prioritise your time.
Examples for this category are useless phone calls, interruptions and other people’s emergencies.

4. Not Urgent and Not Important


Another quadrant which should be severely limited is that for non-urgent and non-important tasks. These are tasks which don’t have to be done within a certain timeframe and add little or no value to your day.
These tasks are often trivial and are the primary contributor to procrastination. These tasks usually completely waste time but are surprisingly the tasks we can spend the most time on.
Examples which fall into this category include scrolling on social media, watching too much TV and general bad habits.

How to use the time management matrix

Now that you have a better understanding of the four quadrants, you can start to categorise your tasks and plan for your goals. By spending a little bit more time in quadrant 2, you can begin to plan for things properly.
When we have our goals and deadlines planned and we can spend a little bit of time on them each day. This reduces the last-minute rush and improves performance overall.
By reducing the rush caused by leaving these projects too late, we reduce the stress they can cause when they become urgent. Then, by reducing the time spent on tasks of little value, we increase the time we have for more important things.
This can take a little bit of time to get used to, and it takes a lot of practice of self-control. Remember that you are the best judge of what is important to you.  Once you get into the swing of it, however, you will find your productivity increased and your stress reduced.
With proper use of the time management matrix, you can improve your productivity and spend more time on the things that matter. With a little self-control and reflection on different tasks, you will quickly be able to differentiate between importance and urgency.
The time management matrix helps to make more time for what counts and free up the time we spend on tasks of little value. It is a great tool to have in your arsenal to get into the flow of working better and working smarter.
