Have you ever been convinced that you’d woken up from sleep, but in fact, you were still dreaming? If so you might have experienced a false awakening.
A false awakening happens when the dreamer wakes up during their dream only to realise they are still dreaming and wake up later on. While the dreamer believes they are awake, they might go through the motions of turning off an alarm, getting out of bed and eating breakfast. However, they will then suddenly find themselves waking up for real, still in bed.

How Does False Awakening Happen in Regular and Lucid Dreams?

False awakenings are a mix of sleeping and waking states of consciousness. Our brains are in a kind of semi-conscious state; not quite awake but not fully asleep either. Actually, many sleep disturbances happen during this mixed brain state, including lucid dreams and sleep paralysis.
During lucid dreams, the dreamer is aware that they are dreaming. They can even influence the outcome of the dream. In sleep paralysis, the dreamer wakes, but their body is frozen as if paralysed. However, false awakenings are not the same as sleep paralysis or lucid dreaming. The dreamer might experience paralysis but only within the dream. Once they have actually woken up they can move as normal.
False awakenings occur during regular dreams and lucid dreaming. Sometimes, during a false awakening in a dream, the dreamer can become aware that something feels a little ‘off’ in the dream. They get a sense that all is not quite as it should be.
They can also occur several times within one dream. The dreamer can believe they have woken up many times while they are dreaming. They then wake up properly, only to discover that all the previous times they were still asleep. False awakenings that occur again and again within the same dream are ‘nested’ dreams.

2 Types of False Awakening

There are two types of false awakening:

Type I

Type 1 is the more common kind of false awakening. Type 1 false awakenings happen once or twice a year. Here the dreamer goes about their normal business of waking up. For instance, they might get out of bed, turn on the shower, prepare breakfast, wake their children up, etc.
During this type of awakening, the dreamer may or may not notice that their surroundings are a little strange. The environment might not be realistic to them. For instance, they might wake up somewhere other than their bedroom.
A typical type 1 false awakening occurs where the dreamer believes he or she has overslept and is late for work. They ‘wake up’ in their dream but in reality, are still asleep in bed. Only when they wake up properly do they understand what has happened. It is a surprise to the dreamer but not overly worrying.

Type 2

Type 2 is a rarer kind of false awakening. Type 2 false awakenings can occur several times in one night. Here the dreamer is aware of a sense of foreboding. They know something is wrong but can’t put their finger on it.
In these types of false awakenings, the dreamer wakes to an atmosphere of tension or stress. They are immediately apprehensive upon waking. They feel suspicious and uncomfortable. The environment feels weird although the dreamer can’t quite account for what’s wrong. They just know something isn’t right.

Causes of False Awakening in Dreams

False awakenings in dreams are associated with broken or disturbed sleep patterns.
For example:
  • Insomnia
  • Snoring
  • Frequent getting up to use the toilet
  • Teeth grinding
  • Daytime tiredness
  • Environmental noises
  • Restless leg syndrome
False awakening dreams are linked to mixed brain states and/or underlying anxiety. Mixed brain states are associated more with Type 1 awakenings, whereas anxiety is linked to Type 2 awakenings.

Mixed brain states

There is still much we don’t know about the brain and various levels of consciousness. In particular, the possibility that our brains can experience several states of consciousness at once.
So, in effect, we can be asleep and dreaming but also awake at the same time. It is during this mixed brain state that we become confused. Are we awake or still asleep? If our brain is in that grey area between two states of consciousness, it’s not surprising that we’re not sure whether we’re dreaming or have woken up.
Most people will experience false awakening dreams once or twice a year. In these cases, a specific event will trigger the awakening. For example, you might have an important job interview the next day and you dream that you’ve overslept and missed it.

Anxiety or worry

On the other hand, some people experience recurring and frequent false awakenings in their dreams. This is linked to underlying anxiety or worry in real-life that is not being addressed.
These awakenings are associated with the Type 2 dreams where you feel uneasy upon waking. You awake to an over-riding sense of foreboding. Experts believe that your subconscious is trying to tell you that you need to face up to the problem or worry in your life. In a sense, this is your subconscious giving you a wake-up call. Your brain is literally waking you up twice.

False Awakening in Lucid Dreams

False awakenings occur in lucid dreaming. The lucid dreamer is aware of being in a dream. As such, to some extent, they can control what happens and what they do.
There are two separate elements of control within lucid dreaming;
  1. Manipulation of the environment or the characters within it
  2. Control over one’s own actions within the dream
False awakenings appear to be linked to the lucid dreamer exerting self-control, rather than manipulating their dream environment. In fact, lucid dreamers are more likely to experience false awakenings.

Symptoms of False Awakening in Dreams

In Type 1 and Type 2 false awakening dreams, there are clues that can signal you are not awake. These are usually a single thing that appears out of place. For example, a person you wouldn’t expect to see, or an object in your house that shouldn’t be there.
You will usually have a sense that something is not quite right. But there are ways you can test yourself. Look at your environment carefully; are the windows and doors straight and the right size? Does the clock face have the right numbers on it?
It is important to recognise what is out of place. This is for two reasons:
  • It is a clue that makes you aware that you are still dreaming.
  • It can lead to the underlying problem that’s worrying you.
Dream analyst Kari Hohn reminds us:
“We dream about what we’re not facing during the day. If we block something out of consciousness, it can appear in our dreams.”
Dreaming allows us to process the thoughts and experiences of the day. Even subconscious ones.

Is There a Treatment for False Awakenings?

Generally speaking, there is no treatment for this kind of sleep disorder. However, if you are suffering from frequent and upsetting false awakenings that are affecting you, it could be a sign of an underlying worry or general anxiety.
In this case, talking therapy might be sufficient to get to the root of your anxiety. Once the worry or stress has been dealt with, your sleep should return to normal. Only if the awakenings are causing you serious distress will you be offered some kind of sleep or dream therapy. Medication may be used to control the symptoms of disturbed sleep.

How to Wake Up from a False Awakening?

Those that are experienced in lucid dreaming will already know how to manipulate the environment in their dreams. However, for anyone who does not experience lucid dreaming, it can be more difficult.
For all the regular dreamers who are not expert lucid dreamers, there are ways to wake up properly from a dream.
  • Test your surroundings by focusing on one thing in your dream.
  • Ask yourself – does this seem real to me?
  • Try controlling what you’re doing, e.g. running or walking.
  • Pinch yourself in the dream; does it hurt?
  • Tell yourself to wake up right now.
  • Move your fingers or toes and continue from there.

How to Turn False Awakenings into Lucid Dreams

Establishing control allows us to feel better about ourselves and the situation we’re in. Turning false awakenings into lucid dreaming is a good way of getting back control. Try the following if you believe you are experiencing a false awakening:
  • Do the same thing every day upon waking up. This is your baseline of knowing whether you are still dreaming or not. For instance, always put your slippers on the left foot then right. Then, if this doesn’t happen, you’ll know you are still asleep.
  • Find a mirror and look at your reflection. In one study, a woman experienced multiple false awakenings only realised she was still asleep because she happened to glance at her reflection and there was nothing there.
  • Look at the clock face and see if you can tell the time. When we dream, our brains shut down the area in our brain responsible for language and numbers. As a result, we find it hard to read clocks and watches when we are dreaming.

Is False Awakening Dangerous?

It is important to remember that false awakenings, in themselves, are not harmful. However, recurrent and Type 2 awakenings do suggest that all is not well with the dreamer. It’s possible that some stress or worry is not being addressed. In this case, therapy to discover the underlying anxiety is the best way forward.

Have you been dreaming of earthquakes recently? Normally this is a very rare dream, but several people I’ve spoken to recently reported having this dream. So what does an earthquake dream mean? Let’s find out.

9 General Meanings of Earthquake Dreams

If you live in an area that is prone to earthquakes this dream indicates minor difficulties to come. However, generally speaking, earthquake dreams are a lot more significant.

1. Dramatic changes ahead

Dreams about an earthquake signify drastic changes and a complete change of circumstance. This might be from an environment such as work, or even a relationship.
Now, this dramatic change will be beneficial but only through hard work. As a result, you will reap the rewards but you’ll have to dig deep.

2. Current events

With the global pandemic showing no signs of slowing down or halting, we are all feeling increased levels of anxiety. At present, normal life is suspended, we are on lockdown and our behaviour is massively restricted.
The problem with the coronavirus is that it is invisible and we are wary of an enemy we can’t see. On the other hand, earthquakes are loud and visible. They shatter the environment. In fact, you could say they are a visual representation of the worry and anxiety we feel about the pandemic.

3. Overwhelmed feeling

Earthquakes in themselves are extremely chaotic. They start underground and rip chasms through the earth’s crust. Earthquakes are the very definition of pent up energy bursting outwards.
Perhaps you are dealing with a particularly hectic period in your life? Are you feeling that life’s frantic pace is too intense for you? Now is the time to take a step back or ask for support.

4. Extreme anxiety

Earthquakes cause tremors, vibrations and lead to a feeling of instability. Do you feel as if the rug has been pulled from beneath your feet? That you cannot cope with normal everyday life?
This dream of an earthquake is literally your subconscious shaking you a warning to get help. You can’t manage on your own; seek assistance now.

5. Personal transformation

When we lose someone close to us, it feels as if the earth beneath our feet is no longer stable. Our world is shattered around us. It has been turned upside down and inside out. This type of earthquake dream is a release of your grief for the person you have lost.

  4. You were in your house at the time of the earthquake, but it didn’t collapse – Expect significant job changes in your family. These may include a move out of town.
  5. Your home did collapse but you and your loved ones were safe – A recent disaster will have little impact on you or your way of life.
  6. You were injured in the earthquake – You are afraid that if you suffer losses in your business or if you lose your job you won’t be able to manage in the long-term.
  7. A person you love is killed or injured in the earthquake – Your feelings are changing towards this person.
  8. You saved someone from an earthquake – A close friend will experience a serious misfortune and come to you for help.
  9. You were saved from an earthquake – A problem you feared would be insurmountable is not as bad as you imagine. But get some support.
  10. You ran away and hid from an earthquake – This dream is telling you to slow down and consider your decisions before you act on them.
  11. You felt the earth shaking under your feet – You don’t feel confident about a recent life choice. This could relate to your career or personal life. Your dream is warning you to be prepared for any eventuality.
  12. You walked around the ruins of an earthquake – This is a repression dream. You are hiding your feelings regarding a failed business, career choice or partner. You have to face up to reality.

Final Thoughts

Dreams about earthquakes can be scary and worrying. But they don’t all signify bad news. Look at the particulars of your dream and you’ll find what your subconscious mind is trying to tell you.

Morning Depression: Why You Wake Up Feeling Depressed and How to Cope

Did you wake up depressed and tired? The good news is there are ways to help. A diurnal variation known as morning depression happens to more people than you think.

Sometimes these changes in overall mood happen rapidly and randomly. The strange thing is, people often just think it’s grogginess or a normal process of waking up, but it’s not. Morning depression is characterized by several symptoms that may differ from the normal process of waking.


Symptoms of morning depression

This diurnal variation can cause similar symptoms to normal waking moods, especially negative feelings, but they are a bit different. First of all, a person with a case of depression that originates in the morning will have severe difficulty waking up. This can be even to the point of physically forcing oneself out of bed at all.

There will also be a difficulty in clear thinking, so talking about important subjects wouldn’t be advisable. Morning depression causes over-sleeping, and then when you’re finally out of bed, routine tasks will be hard to complete. It’s like a cloud is there already, hanging over your head before you even wake.

Why do we feel this way?

While there aren’t any rock-solid causes of morning depression, there are a few ideas about why this may happen. Hormonal problems may be the culprit of these issues, as you have two major players in the sleep/wake cycle: melatonin and cortisol.

If these hormones are displaced, say melatonin is more prevalent during the day, you will feel tired and fatigued. Melatonin is created to help you fall asleep, and if it’s not regulated correctly, your circadian rhythms will be off. This can greatly affect the way you feel the following morning.

Other contributors to feeling depressed in the morning could be substance abuse, medical conditions, trauma or genetic causes. There are many reasons, you see. So it’s important to understand how to cope with variation in emotions, so we can start off the day in the right way.

Ways to cope with this depression

1. Improving sleep environment

Making improvements in your sleep environment can change the way you feel when you wake up. This is because these changes help you sleep better, thus you feel better in general. Some things to consider when setting up your sleep environment:

  • turn off televisions,
  • keep the room dark and cool,
  • eliminate any other distractions.
  • Usually, your mood can be a bit lighter if you’re not still fighting sleeplessness.


2. Wake up earlier

If you have depression in the morning, and you sleep as long as you can before work, then change this. Instead, get up earlier and do something before you have to get ready for work. It really doesn’t matter what you do as long as it’s productive and you stay busy. Why does this help? It’s because doing something in the morning before work reduces morning humdrum and you feel more energized for your job.

3. Turn on the lights immediately

As soon as you wake up, either open a curtain or switch on an overhead light. Light is a great weapon against depression because of how depression interacts with vitamin D. If you can get up and quickly open that window, you are letting natural light come into the room and lifting your mood. It’s amazing how fast this works. After a while, depression in the morning will be greatly reduced.

4. Keep it consistent

Keeping your sleep patterns consistent, in the first place, eliminates much of the blues you feel when you wake up. It feels more natural to get up, and you stand a better chance of getting a full 6-8 hours of sleep during the night. Since the body and mind are connected, and the body needs enough rest, then keeping it consistent is just a smart move.

5. Refrain from caffeine before bedtime

Never drink coffee or soda right before bedtime. Although these beverages provide temporary energy, they can cause grogginess in the morning time. And when I say bedtime, this would actually be best consumed before 6 or 8 p.m. to reduce the chances of having an effect on your sleep.

6. Stop ruminating before sleep

You know those worries and situations you haven’t figured out yet, yeah, those cause a lack of sleep. Lack of sleep means feeling worse in the morning. Those thoughts you entertain for some time even for hours as you lay in the dark can also resurface as soon as you wake up.

This is because you’ve meditated on problems instead of calm meditations and trying to clear the mind. I’ve found that laying in bed thinking about shapes and putting them together is a good way to help me drift off to sleep. I usually feel better when I wake.  I think it’s because exercises like that are simplistic and calming.

7. Prepare for the morning routines

Before you go to bed, maybe lay out the clothes you will wear to work or your children’s clothing. You can prepare part of breakfast, you can make notes as reminders of things so you won’t forget, and stuff of that nature.

Did you know that those ruminations at night are sometimes trying not to forget something for the next day? Making preparations for the next morning can reduce depression simply because it reduces stress.

It’s time to wake up refreshed!

Wouldn’t it feel good to wake up with a spring in your step and a smile on your face? Yeah, I bet you pictured a silly cartoon character jumping out of bed. Well, it’s possible to get close to this feeling and ward off quite a bit of morning depression.

So, try these things, try something you haven’t done before. Instead of just falling into bed, try creating a place that your body and mind will enjoy waking up to. I know I’m going to try a few of these for myself.

Sharks. Denizens of the deep. Fearsome predators. Sharks have a negative association in real life. Just two bars of music from Jaws conjures up the image of that terrifying mouth of razor-sharp teeth rising from the ocean. So what do dreams about sharks mean?
 
Does the presence of a shark in your dream indicate a threat in real life? Is it, therefore, a warning to be careful? But we often swim with sharks so it is a signal to be more daring? Let’s first look at what sharks in dreams represent. Then we can interpret various scenarios.
 
Dreams about Sharks
 
What Emotions Do Sharks Represent?
 
Sharks are associated with several emotions:
  • Fear
  • Coldness
  • Ruthlessness
  • Fear
 
The obvious emotion is fear. Sharks are predators. They are at the top of the food chain. Sharks are masters of the kill. As such, there is nothing that can kill a shark. The thing about a dream with sharks is that they feel so frightening. When we think about sharks in real life we picture that ominous black tail fin, gliding through the sea. It is waiting for the opportune moment to strike.
 
Likewise, we think of those distinctive rows of pointed teeth, sticking out from a yawning mouth. So dreams about sharks are nearly always associated with fear or the threat of something.
 
Coldness
 
Sharks are also known for being cold. Those cold, blank, dead eyes are emotionless. Even during a bloody feeding frenzy. They remain impassive and detached. Sharks are a bit like the Terminator. You cannot reason with them. And they absolutely will not stop, until you are dead.
 
Ruthlessness
 
Like the Terminator analogy, sharks are savage, ruthless killers. They will pursue their prey for miles to get a kill. Or they will wait patiently for the opportune moment. But whatever happens, they’ll never give up.
 
Now we have a basic understanding about dreams with sharks, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of what they actually mean.
 
Animals in dreams have particular importance. As a result, we need to examine them carefully. Sometimes the animal represents you, the dreamer. Other times it can be a symbol of family or friends. The type of animal is obviously, very important.
 
Sharks as People in Your Lives

Water, particularly underwater, is associated with our subconscious. Therefore, it stands to reason that dreams about fish or creatures, such as sharks, that live underwater also relate to deeply-entrenched thoughts and emotions.
 
However, dreaming about a shark doesn’t necessarily mean you are a cold, ruthless person. In actual fact, it could signify that you have unresolved issues or fears that you’ve pushed down. Consequently, these are now resurfacing and need dealing with.
 
In contrast, consider the scenario where people swim with sharks as a personal challenge. Your subconscious mind is connecting the shark with something you are afraid of and asking you to face it.
 
As sharks have a pretty negative association, a dream about one could also indicate a negative part of your identity. None of us likes to admit we may have character flaws. Therefore, it’s likely that we’ve either buried them or haven’t acknowledged them. Your dream is prodding you. It’s saying that you need to recognise that you are not perfect.
 
For instance, you might have anger issues, a bad temper, or act in a coercive-controlling way with a partner. Either way, the shark in your dream is all about getting you to be more enlightened about yourself.
 
The Shark Is Someone in Your Life
 
Negativity is the game here. So what are the major characteristics of the shark? Well, we know they exact fear, they are cold and ruthless. But there’s another aspect in dreams about sharks, and that’s greed.
 
Sharks symbolise greed. They are gluttonous creatures with an insatiable appetite. Dreaming about sharks is a signal that you feel drained by someone close to you. This draining feeling can either be in an emotional or financial way. But whichever way it is, the person who is represented by the shark in your dream is after something that you have. Furthermore, they don’t care who it upsets or affects.

How to Overcome Mental Blocks with These 3 Science-Backed Strategies

Mental blocks are stressful and sometimes painful things to experience and quite hard to overcome. When you have a mental block, your own brain is preventing the recall of memories or your ability to understand something.

Remember your school days. Did you ever feel like no matter how many times the teacher explained something, you just couldn’t get it into your mind? What about trying to recall information you previously knew, but now can’t seem to find the memory in your brain at all? These are both examples of mental blocks. Writer’s block is also a type of mental block which is difficult to overcome.

Mental blocks can be caused by a deep lack of focus, such as that caused in times of great stress. They can also be the result of repression. When we’ve experienced traumas and events in our past we wouldn’t like to think about, our psyche’s shove it down deep for us, so we never have to be reminded of the difficulties. This makes it very difficult to remember correctly if one day we want to, turning it into a mental black.

Overcoming mental blocks can be challenging to say the least – but not impossible. Scientists have spent years researching how to overcome mental blocks and have come up with several, science-backed strategies for you.


3 Strategies to Overcome Mental Blocks


Nature
As it turns out, our Mothers were right all along. Going outside does make us feel better and help us overcome mental blocks. Many studies have been done over the years into the theory that we can overcome mental blocks by spending time in nature.

One study in particular, from the University of Stanford in California, has proven what we often assumed. These studies were based on a theory that was published in the 1980s. Attention Restoration Theory (ART) is the theory that nature can restore all kinds of memories and focus which has been lost.

This study, carried out in 2008, then again in 2015, proved once and for all that spending time in nature provided all kinds of cognitive benefits, including overcoming mental blocks. Participants were given tests on memory, alertness, mental wellbeing and other types of cognitive functions. They were then split into groups and sent on two separate walks. Some walked in an urban environment while the others were sent to a natural area.

When the participants returned, they were tested again. Those who walked in nature showed an impressive increase in all their previous results, especially memory and general mental health. In a second experiment, participants were only shown photographs of natural or urban landscapes. Still, the results were the same.

These studies ultimately proved that nature can help us overcome mental blocks. If you’re struggling to locate a memory or focus on some studying, you could try spending time outside (or even just looking at pictures if you don’t have time).


Exercise
Another old wives’ tale has always told us that exercising will help us overcome our mental blocks. Science has now proven that to be true. A study by the University of British Columbia investigated whether exercising really does improve cognitive functioning, and by association, help us overcome mental blocks.

Their experiments showed that regular aerobic exercise actually boosts the size of the hippocampus – a part of the brain responsible for our verbal memory and learning. Exercises like strength training and balance didn’t yield the same results. In order to reap the benefits, you have to get your heart pounding and your body sweating!

The study concluded that there are both direct and indirect ways that exercise helps us to overcome mental blocks. Aerobic exercises have direct health benefits on the brain. These include reducing inflammation and stimulating the release of chemicals that affect the health of current brain cells and the growth of new ones.

More blood flow and healthy brain cells definitely aid us in overcoming mental blocks. Indirectly, exercising reduces stress and tension, improves our mood and helps us to sleep better. All these things contribute to clearer thinking and less confusing brain fog.

This exercise can be as simple as going for a walk (consider it being in nature too for a double whammy) or even cleaning. Anything that gets your heart rate higher than usual will ultimately help you to overcome those tedious mental blocks.


Napping
Finally, snoozing in the day has been recognized as beneficial, instead of just “lazy”. Science has now proven that taking a nap during the day can, in fact, help you overcome your mental blocks.

Research from the Weill Cornell Medical College has shown that napping can improve our overall cognitive functioning. They studied the results of several experiments that looked into the effects of napping on thinking, processing, and mental blocks.

In all the experiments, the participants were tested using monitors while they slept, as well as mental tests after they woke. These psychological tests included reaction times and vigilance. No matter the method, the results were always the same. Napping improved their cognitive abilities and helped them think clearer and learn faster.

Now, this strategy is still in the early stages of experiments, but it’s one I firmly agree with. The skeptics question the benefits of long naps due to the grogginess and confusion we feel when we first wake up. This is known as sleep inertia.

Some advocate for shorter naps as they show better cognitive results immediately after waking. They assume this makes it easier to get over mental blocks. However, overall studies show that the length of the nap didn’t matter. There was no difference seen in the results once a delay was given for the sleep inertia to fade.

So, next time you’re feeling blocked and can’t seem to overcome it, try packing it all in and taking a midday nap instead!

There are many theories as to why we dream, but dreams about animals are particularly interesting.
We use animals in our everyday lives to describe certain aspects of human behaviour. For example, we ‘horse’ around with our friends when we have fun, we call a person a ‘snake’ if we don’t trust them, and someone is a ‘rat’ if they talk behind our backs.

Therefore, animals can symbolise parts of our personality.

And as we all know, dreams are packed full of symbols and hidden meanings. So whenever you dream about an animal, you can be sure that it relates to a personal aspect in your life.
Before we look at the different type of animals in dreams, it is worth remembering that the situation in which you find yourself with the animal is also important.
  • Domesticated animals in your dream suggest you are aware of your responsibilities but find them overwhelming at times.
  • Wild animals are an indication to express yourself in a more liberating fashion.
  • If you were attacked by the animal, this suggests your emotions are being forced down and they suddenly erupted out of nowhere.

These omens of bad fortune are a symbol of sadness and grief, usually suppressed by the dreamer.
 
 
26. Snakes
 
 
 
Snakes in dreams usually have sexual connotations. They are phallic symbols and represent our sexual urges. Another interesting factor about snakes is that they are also temperature-dependent. If the snake in your dream was cold and sluggish, this could mean you feel bored sexually.
 
 
27. Zebras
 
 
 
No two zebras have the same pattern of stripes, therefore, they are unique creatures. To dream about a zebra is an encouraging sign to expand your creativity to the next level.

Dreams about driving a car can be wonderfully exhilarating or extremely frightening. It all depends on the context.
If you were driving a car in your dream and it’s stuck in your mind, it could be a sign from your subconscious. As to why we dream? There are many theories.
Freud was the first to put forward the idea that we all have hidden desires buried in our subconscious mind. Freud believed that dreams are a way of letting us know what these repressed desires are.
Others think they have more literal interpretations. Namely, they represent the stressful situations we are experiencing. As such, we should look at the symbols and images in dreams and decipher those if we want to really interpret dreams properly.
The good thing about driving dreamsis that they are full of symbols. Just think about traffic lights for instance. A red light indicates stop whatever you’re doing and green means go in any language.

How to interpret dreams about driving a car?

Who was driving in the dream?

This is probably the most important aspect of the dream. If you were driving, it signifies a level of control.
If you weren’t driving, who was? What is your relationship with this person in real life? Do you get on with them? Now, how did you feel about them driving? Happy, nervous?
If you were nervous, then examine what’s going on between the pair of you in your normal life. Is there any friction? Are they trying to control your life? Or are they just trying to support you?

How well were they driving?

If you drove well, it means you are confident and in control in all areas of your life. However, if you didn’t, it is a sign of low self-esteem.
If someone else drove, consider how good their driving was. Were they driving too fast? This indicates you feel out of control. If they are driving too slow, you could be too impatient with others.

How fast were you driving?

If you were driving fast, then your dream may be telling you to slow downand enjoy the scenery a bit more. Relax with your family, take time off.
Conversely, if you were going slowly, it is an indication you are heading in the right direction, but you could work more efficiently.

Were you in the front or the back?

This is another aspect of control. If you were in the back, you are literally an audience member of your own life. By sitting back and watching someone else take control over the car, you are stuck in the past.
You need to move on from whatever is holding you back.

Did you arrive at your destination?

If you got to your destination, this is a good sign that you are on the right path.
If you got stuck in a traffic jam or were delayed for another reason, then your dream is telling you that you may need to look at other courses of action. Perhaps the route you are taking is not the best way for you.

What type of car were you driving?

These are all important factors of the driving dream. If the car was an old make and model you remember from your childhood, you may be struggling with issues from this time period.
What the type of car represents in your dream depends on your gender. For example, if you are female and dreamt of a big car with a large engine, you could feel you need protection. However, if a man dreams of this type of car, it indicates a desire to protect his loved ones.
A woman that dreams of a car in softer, more feminine colours is looking for romance in her life. Men dreaming of this type of car are feeling romantic or in love.

How old was the car in your dream?

How well-maintained is the car in your dream? For example, are the tyres worn? Is the paint chipped? It is missing any vital parts it needs to run efficiently? Does it look smart and clean or untidy and dirty? Does it run well or sound as if it is going to break down at any minute?
There are obvious symbolic clues here. For example, a clean, tidy well-maintained car that runs smoothly is a good indication that all is running well in your life.
The opposite, however, a dodgy car that is dirty and about to fall apart should give you cause for concern. What is going on in your life that you need to focus on?

Were you driving during the day or at night?

Driving a car during the day in bright sunlight on a main, well-signposted road is much nicer than driving at night with no lights. Furthermore, they both have different meanings.
The first is an indication that you have a clear path ahead of you and you know exactly where you are going. As for the latter, it could indicate that you have no idea about the future and you feel blind in some areas.

Were you in an accident?

The type of accident is significant here. Did you hit something or did another car hit you? This is a sign of conflicting ideas battling for control. Perhaps you have met someone whose ideas conflict with yours?
If you were rear-ended, it suggests someone from your past has resurfaced and still holds some influence over you.

Did you crash?

This is a clear sign to slow down, your body has literally ‘crashed’ and needs to stop and take time off. It also signifies mental strain.
Has something important come to a sudden end? A job, relationship, have youlost something or someone very important recently?

Was there a fire in your car?

Fire in any dream represents two different factors; cleansing and anger. To decide which one is relevant in your driving dream, you should look at the context of the whole dream.
Who was with you in the car? In real life do you feel angry with them? Have they hurt you in some way? If the dream is about cleansing, have you come to the end of something in real life and you are ready to move on?

Are there other cars around you?

The main factor in driving dreams is what you were doing and the type of car you were in. However, if there were other cars around you, they are significant.
This is because they represent other aspects of you that you might not be aware of. For example, if they are people you know, they could indicate traits you don’t want to admit to owning or want to possess.

Parked cars are a sign you feel stuck in real life and cannot move on. However, they can have positive and negative meanings. If you’ve been working hard, they can be a wakeup call to take a break.
If you cannot remember where you’ve left your car, you might be uncertain of the next step in life. Get some advice before you move on.
It’s not surprising that dreams in which we see ourselves driving a car are common. We use our cars almost every day and they are an important part of our lives. Perhaps that’s why they crop up in our dreams so often.
