We did it - Europe resists! ~ Avaaz

We did it:

Europe resists!

Ricken Patel

Dear amazing Avaaz,

We’ve never been more proud of our movement.

After Trump, Brexit, and Bolsonaro, Europe was supposed to be next in last weekend’s elections. The last reliably democratic global power, drowned in the fake news and hate of the far right.

To meet this historic threat, Avaaz exposed and forced the takedown of likely the largest disinformation networks EVER. Networks that were racking up 3 BILLION views a year of their poison in just six countries. Enough to reach every voter an average of twenty times!!

And because hateful extremists also count on low voter turnout, we launched inspirational calls to defend democracy and go vote that were seen over 100 million times across Europe just in the last few days before the election!

The result: The highest voter turnout in 25 years. The far right “surge” reduced to a ripple. And a real surge of climate-saving Greens and passionately pro-EU liberal democrats, who now hold the balance of power in the new Europe!

Our unprecedented win on disinformation made front page news across the world. And a Director-General of the EU Parliament, Jaume Duch Guillot, said "Avaaz has been a driving force helping the European Parliament mobilize people to vote in the 2019 election."

Read on for the inside story of our efforts in this election season, from Spain to Silicon Valley. This was an effort powered by 80,000 Avaaz donors, another 80,000 volunteers, and nearly 2 million members. And it helped shape history. Thank you!!!

We’ve never been more proud, of all of us.

We did it - Europe resists

Taking down the far-right’s most powerful weapon

Disinformation is a democracy-killer, the far-right’s secret weapon. Wherever they’ve won, they’ve flooded social media with fake news and toxic lies. The only way to really stop it is for powerful governments to pressure or regulate Facebook and YouTube to clean up the poison. But there was only one global power left that hadn’t fallen to disinformation-driven leaders. Europe. If Europe fell, it would be hard to hope for democracy.

So we launched an audacious plan -- building an entire team of highly skilled ‘Elves’ to take on the trolls by investigating disinformation, and getting it taken down. Page by Page. Fake account by fake account. Tens of thousands of us donated to make it a reality, and over 80,000 Avaazers volunteered to help. Nothing like it had ever been tried!

We did it - Europe resists

Working from a war room in Brussels our team of 30 uncovered what 30,000 Facebook monitors had missed -- a massive web of disinformation networks churning out toxic lies in the heart of Europe. We sent over 700 pages of detailed investigation results to Facebook, showing how these networks operate, coordinate, use fake accounts, and mislead people.

And we didn’t just find them. We shut them down! In Spain, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, the UK, France, and Germany. Everywhere we looked, we had impact. In total, Facebook took down networks that were racking up 3 BILLION (!!!!) views in a single year!! Enough to reach every single voter in Europe over twenty times!

"I haven't seen any of the other fact-checking or disinformation monitoring groups have anything like the impact." - Facebook Insider

By the end, top EU politicians, journalists, and security experts were coming to our war room every single day for information and briefings, and Facebook publicly thanked us. Avaaz is now the epicenter of global efforts to combat disinformation

And our work made headline news all over the world, from the top story on The Guardian, to the front page of The New York Times, to Le MondeDer Spiegel, and El Mundo -- warning hundreds of millions of Europeans of the disinformation threat just before the elections. Just look at the coverage!

We did it - Europe resists

Getting a Record Voter Turnout!

But that wasn’t all. The far right knew their best hope lay in low turnout. So one of the aims of disinformation is to destroy trust in institutions, leaders and democracy -- and put millions off voting.

So we launched the biggest get out the vote operation in Avaaz history, deploying a team of outstanding creatives to flood social media across the continent with one hopeful message: Vote to save Europe

Our videos and images were so inspiring and popular that celebrities, hundreds of civil society groups, MEPs, and even the Spanish government shared them! Thanks in part to amazing online ads paid for by small donations from Avaaz members our content was seen by Europeans over 100 million times in the run up to the election -- everywhere from Facebook and Google, to Youtube, Instagram, and Snapchat. Check the examples below!

Our videos and images were seen over 100 million times

Meanwhile, our team hit the phones, encouraging massive organisations like Spotify to use their reach to encourage people to vote. Spotify has 70 million users across Europe!

And it worked! Turnout in the elections was the highest it’s been in 25 years!! And new voters overwhelmingly backed pro-European, progressive parties, who will bring bold new ideas to European decision-making.

"Avaaz has been a driving force in helping the European Parliament mobilise people to vote at the 2019 European Elections. We succeeded in this together and increased the number of people who cast their vote for the very first time. This is what democracy is all about – thank you Avaaz!" - Jaume Duch Guillot, Director-General for Communication for the European Parliament

Not just Europe

The campaign wasn’t just in Europe -- we took our message to Silicon Valley too.

We championed an effective and simple solution to the fake news crisis that platforms could adopt tomorrow: Correct the Record. The idea is that every single person who sees fake news is told about it, and given verified, fact-checked corrections right in their news feed. When we came up with it, TIME Magazine called it a ‘radical new proposal that could curb fake news on social media’. Now it’s being tested by some of the biggest social networks on the planet.

And we took brave survivors of disinformation from Burma, Finland, and the US to meet top executives at Twitter, Facebook, Google, and Youtube. When they told their stories, they brought tears to the eyes of the big tech leaders. And a week later, Twitter banned the Burmese military chief responsible for spreading vile hate speech that helped drive massacres of thousands of Rohingya people!

We did it - Europe resists

Disinformation Survivors: Ethan Lindenberger, Tun Khin and Jessikka Aro

"The meetings were very emotional. I could see in their faces the realisation they are not doing enough. Eventually justice was done. This would not have not been possible without Avaaz. Thank you!" - Tun Khin, Rohingya disinformation survivor

A tipping point

And the result of all this?

Europe is safe!! The far right rose a bit, but they're still a fringe with no power, and climate-saving Greens and pro-European liberal democrats have surged into being the new power-players! Far from crumbling, Europe will be stronger and better than ever for the next 5 years. And that is huge for humanity, on everything from climate change to biodiversity to human rights to cleaning up social media.

And voter turnout was the highest in 25 years!! This is a BIG deal, because the far-right wants to portray the European Union as a project of elites and technocrats, but this election removes all doubt: it's a People's Europe now.

This election was the result of a symphony of humanity of millions of citizens, leaders, parties, and civic groups who rallied to defend the values most of us hold dear.

And damn are we proud of the role we played in that symphony. Because disinformation is a democracy killer. And this time, democracy killed disinformation.

And we can make this a tipping point. Because out of our greatest crises, our greatest progress can emerge. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights rose from the ashes of World War II. In South Africa, the brutality of apartheid gave rise to the most visionary national healing process ever seen.

And now, from the crisis of global Trumpism, a new future is emerging. A future where people come together to defend and renew our democracies. To face down the lies. To choose love over hate. It’s a future our movement is shaping. And what happens next, will depend on all of us.

With fierce gratitude and pride for all that we have done together,

Ricken, Bert, Christoph, Flora, Fadi, Mike, Antonia, Luca, Luis, Martyna, Pascal, Pati, Nate, Joseph, Camille, Alice, Julie and the whole Avaaz team

PS: Want more detail? Check out how many people these networks are estimated to have reached over a year! This is just some of what we got done across Europe:
  • 🇫🇷 France: We found disinformation on Facebook related to the Yellow Vests that reached more than 100 million views. Then Facebook removed the main white nationalist page and demoted two more for repeatedly spreading disinformation.

  • 🇪🇸 Spain : Days before Spain's national elections, Facebook removed pages with more than 1.6 billion views a year after we flagged them! And we ran a groundbreaking investigation into the far-right party, and released the results to the media just before the vote!

  • 🇮🇹 Italy: As a result of our investigation Facebook shut down pages with almost 4 million followers that racked up nearly 900 million views a year.

  • 🇩🇪 Germany: Fake accounts and pages were spreading disinformation and boosting the reach of the far-right AfD party. After our report, Facebook took them down -- a network with more than 100 million views a year!

  • 🇵🇱 Poland: Our team discovered a highly coordinated network spreading divisive anti-immigration and anti-EU content topics as well as false and misleading information. Facebook responded by removing pages with 1.9 million followers and 200 million views a year.

  • 🇬🇧United Kingdom: Facebook took down content reaching 100 million views a year that was promoting banned figures like anti-Islam hate campaigner Tommy Robinson.

Briefing: The urgent threat of disinformation and how we can protect ourselves ~ Avaaz

Briefing:

The urgent threat of disinformation and how we can  protect ourselves.

Ricken Patel - Avaaz <avaaz@avaaz.org>.

2018/05/21.

.

Dear friends,

Brazil’s new president makes Trump look like a saint: he praises dictators, wants to destroy the Amazon, and says gay children should be beaten up.

And like Trump, the polls said he stood no chance, but he still won! His secret weapon?

Disinformation.

Bolsonaro’s supporters used fake accounts to flood social media with toxic lies designed to confuse voters and sow distrust. And it worked!! Polls now show that a large majority of his voters believed these lies, for example that his opponent was a pedophile.

And it’s not just in Brazil. We’re all being targeted, wherever we live and whatever our political beliefs. This is the most serious threat facing our democracies today, and to stop it, we have to understand it.

5 things we all need to know about disinformation

1.It feeds off our fear and it travels fast.

Humans are hardwired to remember negative information over positive, it’s how we learn. Peddlers of disinformation know this and play on deep emotions, which make us far more likely to share it on social media -- and so it spreads up to six times faster than factual news!

2.It thrives on social media and reaches billions.

The more time we spend on social media, the more money those companies make. They know that extreme and shocking content hooks our attention, so they programme their sites to promote it. And it reaches billions. The biggest newspapers sell a few million copies, while news on Facebook reaches over a BILLION per day.

3.It is being weaponized against us.

Authoritarian leaders from Brazil to China are weaponizing disinformation as the newest move in the playbook for age-old divide and rule politics. But it’s Russia that leads the pack -- their huge ‘troll farms’ employ legions of people to set up millions of fake accounts to spread disinformation. And RT, Russia's propaganda outlet, is one of YouTube’s most-viewed news channels with an estimated 2 billion views

4.It's killing people and poisoning democracy.

Disinformation is driving vigilante violence in India and Brazil, and fueled brutal ethnic cleansing in Myanmar. It’s also poisoning our politics. Fake news helped give us Brexit, Bolsonaro, and Trump. And it’s destroying trust in mainstream media, our democratic institutions, and political leaders, creating the perfect breeding ground for anti-establishment strongmen to rise to power. Because of disinformation, social media is now a threat to democracy

5.No one is immune.

People across the political spectrum are being micro-targeted as part of a strategy to polarise and erode our societies. In the US, Russia's troll army created a fake page for American black activists that drew more followers than the official Black Lives Matter movement pages! We think we’d never fall for this stuff, but studies show that even the most educated among us tend to believe fake news, and people over 65 are even more likely to spread it.

Disinformation spreads distrust, fear, and lies. But the more we know about it, the more we can stop it -- share this briefing with friends and family to educate them on the disinformation threat. And read on to see how to protect yourself!

5 ways to protect ourselves from disinformation

1.If you see something, say something!
Don’t believe everything you read on the internet. Seen a random Facebook post with shocking info about a political candidate? Don't trust it! Check the facts with reliable sources, and if you think you may have found a piece of disinformation, let us know here

2.Keep supporting real journalism.
Most traditional media is covered by regulations and ethics that make it far more trustworthy than a random dude on the internet. They’re not perfect, but they check their facts and can be held responsible! Subscribing to a high quality newspaper with real journalism is one of the most powerful acts a citizen can take today.

3.Join the campaign to clean up social media.
Avaaz has a simple and effective plan to push the tech giants to cure the disinformation epidemic on social media -- by showing independently-verified factual corrections to fake news. Join the campaign

4.Don’t give up on democracy!
The goal of the troll armies is to create such a climate of distrust that ordinary citizens walk away from democracy. When that happens, fanatic extremists can dominate it. We must keep showing up and voting, encouraging our friends and family to do the same, and holding our elected officials to account.

5.Choose hope in humanity.
Disinformation preys on our deepest fears, appealing to our natural negativity bias and bringing out our more angry and cynical sides. But if we can learn to engage with the arguments of people who don’t think like us, with empathy, big ears, and wisdom, we can connect across our differences. We have more in common than our fears make us believe. If we trust that, amazing things can happen.

Our civilisation is the most successful in human history, on so many fronts, from human rights to democracy. We're on track to end poverty within a generation, and we're close to putting every child in school. It’s clear that democracy, and great journalists, accountable political leaders, and fellow citizens got us here. But the forces pushing disinformation are powerful and threaten to destroy all of that. Let's not let them win by giving up hope!

With hope and trust,

Ricken, with Iain, Nell, Risalat, Sarah, and the whole Avaaz team

P.S. What does disinformation actually look like? Check out these 3 terrifying real-world examples!

When disinformation is used to fuel a genocide

Hateful lies about the Rohingya minority in Myanmar went viral online. Fake claims of things like cannibalism (like above) were used by the military and anti-muslim groups to justify ethnic cleansing. Thousands of Rohingya families were slaughtered, women brutally raped, and homes torched to the ground, leading UN officials to declare a genocide.

When fake news is used to attack entire groups, like migrants

Almost 10 million people saw this video of migrants destroying a police car. The problem? It's also entirely fake -- it's actually from a movie, and was debunked years ago! That didn't stop far-right groups in Italy and across Europe from sharing it again, even just a few weeks ago -- and Facebook did nothing while it went viral, inflaming suspicion, hostility, and even hatred of immigrant people.

When disinformation is used to polarise and stoke fear and anger

In France, people shared a letter by French actor Gérard Lanvin over 251,000 times, criticising President Macron and his government! The only problem? It was completely fake, with the actor himself claiming he had been a victim of identity theft. It's a clear example of how disinformation is used to sow distrust of the government -- and why it's such a major threat to democracy.
