Ebooks vs Printed Books: Which Are Better for Your Brain, According to Science?

printed books vs ebooks.

Book enthusiasts have long defended the benefits of the printed word over ebooks. Yet, the arguments are frequently centered on the look and feel of a book. In a world where much of our lives are conducted on a screen, the arguments for the benefits of a printed book over an ebookare increasingly focusing on the benefits the former have on our brain.

If you’re on the fence when it comes to a preference over ebooks vs printed books, this article intends to look at the science behind the debate.

Are printed books better for your brain than ebooks and why?

5 reasons why printed books are better for your brain

1. They keep your attention

With a printed book, you simply have the pages in front of you and nothing else. Whereas, with an ebook, there are multiple temptations at your fingertips. Your e-reader might allow you to look up definitions of words, browse other readers comments on the book, or have a browse option that allows you to search the internet.

A study conducted at American University found that 92% of those surveyed found that they concentrated better when reading the printed word over an e-version. A printed book, therefore, encourages us to read more carefully and helps our brain to hold focus on the task in hand.

2. Ebooks encourage us to skim read

Whether you use an ebook to read or download titles on your phone or tablet, research has shown that reading on a screen alters the way our brain views the text.

Professor Ziming Liu, from San Jose State University, refers to ‘screen-based reading behavior’ which constitutes the tendency to browse and scan a text rather than practice in-depth and concentrated reading as we do with printed books.

The consequence of foregoing in-depth reading has been the focus of further studies. Maryanne Wolf, in her work on the evolution of the reading brain, has explored the impact reading digital text has on the cognitive functions we draw upon when reading.

While she recognizes that we still know very little about the digital reading brain, she laments the possible loss of ‘deep reading’ which printed text facilitates.

3. Printed books help us to absorb and retain more information

Another strong argument in the ebooks vs printed books debate is the capacity with which we absorb information from the printed word over its digital counterpart. Unsurprisingly, as printed books help to hold our attention and trigger more concentrated reading, we are better able to absorb and retain more information from them.

A study conducted at Stavanger University in Norway gave 50 readers the same short story to read, with half the readers using a Kindle to read the story and half reading from a printed book. Participants were then tested on their ability to remember certain aspects of the story.

The results found that those that read the story on a Kindle found it significantly harder to reconstruct the plot when asked to.

4. Printed books help us to be more emotionally engaged

Printed books not only help us to draw on more cognitive resources, they draw on our emotional responses also. Similar to the point about keeping our attention, printed books are said to help the reader to be more emotionally absorbed in the book.

Another study from the University of Stavanger, conducted by Anne Mangen, found that participants that read an upsetting story on paper reported higher levels of ‘empathy, transportation, immersion, and narrative coherence’ than those who read the same story on an iPad.

So, if you really want to get lost in a story, go for the hard copy.
5. Printed books bring more joy

Despite fears that digital books would remove the need for printed versions, these predictions have proved way off the mark. Sales of e-readers and ebooks have, in fact, slowed since reaching their peak in 2014 and printed books have enjoyed a resurgence. A lot of this has come down to the joy one feels when holding a book.

In terms of the impact this has on our brain, proponents of the printed word suggest that a printed book serves to ignite multiple senses in a way that an ebook cannot.

The feel of a book, the way it smells, the way it looks, the satisfaction one feels as they see their progression through the pages are all elements that are unique to a paper book.

Research has shown that the senses that are awakened by a paper book can, in fact, inspire individuals to do something new, make important life-decisions, reduce stress and increase happiness.
Final Words

Despite the many benefits on the brain of a printed book, there are, of course, benefits of ebooksand digital text. Ebooks have assisted with the democratization of information, in that they help to ensure books can be available in formats that make them accessible to those in a way that the printed word is not.

However, theories that predicted that ebooks would cause the death of the paperback have proved unfounded as many are drawing on the scientifically proven benefits of reading from printed books.

The ebooks vs printed books debate is sure to continue, but with studies increasingly showing that printed books draw on more of our brain’s resources it may lead you to renew that library card and stock up on the paperbacks.

7 Must-Read Fiction Books That Will Leave a Mark on Your Soul ~ Sherrie.

7 Must-Read Fiction Books That Will Leave a Mark on Your Soul.

By Sherrie.

July 13th, 2019

Reading is an important part of life, truly. There are many fiction books which are a must-read and are sure to impress you.
Despite the uprising of technology and ever-changing modifications of modern times, reading is still a timeless treasured activity.
I remember a time when reading books, you know, the ones you can actually hold in your hand, was the only way to read. So many of us can look back at a simpler time as this.
From then until now, I’ve encountered many must-read fiction books that remained with me throughout the years…touched my soul even. But there are others too.

The power of the right words that makes some fiction books a must-read

Thousands of words could leave no impression at all, just as one sentence could leave a deep indention upon one’s soul.
There are books to read for fun, non-fiction books to learn facts, then there is must-read fiction which proves to be some of the best books in existence.

Here’s where we take a close look at a few of them. Maybe you’ve read some of these yourself.

1. Hope for the Flowers, Trina Paulus, (1972)

To some, this story may seem like a children’s book, but at a closer look, you will notice the allegorical and rather mature meaning of the story.
Hope for the Flowers relays a tale of two caterpillars, as they ponder their destinies. One caterpillar assumes you must crawl and step on everyone else to get to the top and realize the best of life. The other caterpillar does what comes instinctual and builds a life which is rewarding.
Stripe, the caterpillar who has climbed a mountain of other caterpillars, finally reaches the top of the mound and only finds hundreds of other mounds of caterpillars, in the distance, doing the same thing. Yellow, the caterpillar who followed her instincts has built a cocoon and emerged as a beautiful butterfly.
The best part of this story is that yellow is willing to help Stripe remember his instincts. I think you will love this story and it will leave a warm feeling in your soul.

2. The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho, (1988)

First written in Portuguese, this must-read inspirational fiction book, became a bestseller worldwide. There’s a reason for such adoration.
The story is about a shepherd boy who decides to follow his destiny because of a dream he had while in an old church. A fortune teller suggests he follow his dream and travel to Egypt in search of treasure within the pyramids. As the boy travels, he encounters many obstacles and learns many lessons.
After meeting an alchemist, who teaches him how to know his true self, he is changed. When he is robbed, one of the thieves accidentally reveals a great revelation.
We learn from this story that sometimes what we need and desire the most is right where we are. Fruitless searching will take us right back to the beginning.

3. Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk, (1996)

You may have seen the movie, but you should read the book as well.
In this must-read fiction novel, an unnamed protagonist struggles with insomnia. He seeks help only to be told that insomnia isn’t really suffering. He seeks help in support groups instead.
Finally, he meets a man who would change his life by introducing him to underground fighting arenas. This environment, you might say, becomes his therapy.
This novel became so popular that a movie was adapted from the story, as I mentioned. It even has a following of young men who see the story as inspiration.

4. The Road, Cormac Maccarthy, (2005)

This story touched my soul in that it showed me the depths of human nature alongside the love and beauty of it as well. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic landscape where every living human being is out to survive at any cost. This means killing other humans and even more depraved acts.
The main protagonist and his son travel in hopes of finding long term sanctuary. The novel will rip your heart out at times but does end with a glimmer of hope.
Although the story may be hard to stomach at times, it will certainly leave you thinking about human nature for quite a while after reading.

5. The Story of Keesh, Jack London (1904)

We, as humans have trouble understanding things beyond our learned abilities. We may understand the strength and we may understand a certain level of magic, or say, “witchcraft”, as The Story of Keesh reminds us.
One thing that sometimes makes human beings struggle is the act of strategy. While some strategies are easy to understand, some are so simple, they go over our heads.
In the story of Keesh, the young 13-year-old Keesh teaches his tribe about using strategy to hunt, even to hunt animals which seem impossible to capture and kill. Keesh’s father before him was killed by a large bear, and yet, Keesh managed to kill many of them for his village.
Did he use strength? No! Did he use witchcraft, as the elders suggested? No, he did not. He simply created a trap which would kill the animal from the inside out.
This story leaves an impression on our souls and reminds us that there is so much power in the human mind and in determination. We don’t forget stories of this kind.

6. Sophie’s World, Jostein Gaarder, (1991)

Some people never really ask the important questions about life until they are older.
As for Sophie, she gets the opportunity to learn about philosophy as a teenager. After meeting Alberto Knox, her life changes forever. During the novel, she experiences an ability to utilize her imagination like never before.
After reading this book, you may learn a few new things yourself. And I promise, your soul will be left with an impression like no other.
The must-read fiction book became so popular that it was translated from its native Norwegian to 59 other languages. The book was also adapted into a film and video game too.

7. To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee (1960)

It’s amazing just what we miss when we’re not paying attention. In this novel, Scout and her brother Jem are lost in the wiles of childhood. Meanwhile, their lawyer father, Atticus, is busy trying to win his most important case. A black man has been accused of raping a white woman, and Atticus must prove his innocence.
This novel will touch your soul as you read about the truth of Southern Alabama in the 60s. You will realize just how much we take for granted about human rights and freedom. While some of the historical language usages may be jarring, it’s a must-read.

Sometimes Fiction Can Change You

There are many self-help books and non-fiction journals that change the way we see the world and ourselves. There is also outstanding must-read fiction that changes us as much as other types of books.
I encourage you to explore fiction titles in your area. You never know when you might find a gem worth sharing with others.
Until we read from different lives, perspectives and even imaginative stories, we never really understand the full scope of the life we live. Our souls can only be touched by allowing the fullness of life to enter. So, go forth, read, read, read….and get to know yourself and the world like never before.

How to Retain Information More Easily with These 5 Strategies

How to Retain Information More Easily with These 5 Strategies.

By Guest Author.

May 6th, 2019

retain information easily strategies.

Do you ever feel like you’re expected to keep track of too much information? That there’s more going on in your life and the world around you than you can possibly remember? If so you’re not alone. The truth is most people are overwhelmed with the amount of informationthrown at them on a daily basis. But if you think you’re incapable of improving your ability to retain this information, think again.

Human evolution and our ability to retain information

From an evolutionary perspective, humans are built to do two things: travel long distances on two feet and keep a massive mental catalog of facts and details about the world around us.
For hundreds of thousands of years, these basic skills helped early humans to successfully integrate themselves into a multitude of different environments around the planet ranging from the subtropical to the subarctic.
If you could somehow travel back in time and talk to our early ancestors, you would quickly realize the average “caveman” or “cavewoman” had an indelible memory regarding the natural world.
They knew everything they could about every planet and every animal in the area. They kept accurate track of the seasons and could quickly calculate how all these factors could and would intertwine to influence their lives. Most important of all, they caught on to the ways in which they could turn around and influence their environment.
What this means is that humans are bioengineered by Mother Nature to be memory machines. The only problem is that society has changed so much in the last few thousand years that our brains haven’t caught up yet. We’re expected to remember thingswithout being exposed to them the way we would have been thousands of years ago.
With this in mind, it’s important for modern humans to utilize their natural information retention capabilities in order to remember the things modern life expects us to.

Here are a few ways to improve your brain’s ability to retain information:

Repeat

The extreme amount of information available to the average person – most of which comes via the internet – is overwhelming, to say the least. For most people, it’s not a question of whether they can find information but rather what information do they want to find?
More times than not, Google has you covered with a simple search. This means lots of modern learning experiences are one-off events where the individual is unlikely to encounter that information again.
Contrast this with the experience of our ancient ancestors, whose worlds were much smaller in scope. They found themselves repeatedly exposed to the same things throughout their lives. This forced a level of repetition which ultimately led to expert-level retention.
Modern humans can also rely on repeat exposure to information to improve their memory retention capabilities.

Read

everyday reading
One major advantage modern humans have over our ancient ancestors is widespread literacy. The ability to read is incredibly vital for retaining information in the modern age. There is simply too much information to do it any other way.
According to transcription experts and others working directly with the transfer of spoken language to written words, the process of seeing speech on paper or on screen has a potent impact on memory. This is because a word is ultimately a symbol; humans have a better chance of remembering an idea if they can connect it to a visual construct.
Letters joined to make words provide that visual construct. Reading is arguably how modern humans “hack” our own complicated societies. It gives us a way to apply our visual cortex in pursuit of understanding abstract concepts.

Report

Explaining your interpretation of information to others is a crucial part of the retention process. This explains why all those teachers made you write all those reports; it helped to cement the information in your memory and made the learning experience something which proved longlasting in its impact.
It’s a process which undoubtedly proved vital to our ancestors, who relied on each other to share important information with accuracy and integrity.
In order to better retain information in the future, consider writing a report. Even a 100-word paragraph can prove effective in helping to establish long-term memory of a given event or learning experience.

Discuss

discussion retain information
Only sharing your thoughts and feelings about a given topic is not enough to effectively remember all the important details. This is due to the human tendency to incorporate bias into our explanations and insights whether we mean to or not.
To help flesh out any misinterpretations caused by bias, people ought to review and discussthese topics with others.
Listening to what others have to say about a certain piece of information is like getting a whole extra brain’s worth of critical thinking prowess. Their insights can help you to remember things you may have originally overlooked because of any number of factors and vice versa.

Debate

Lastly, effective information retention requires some form of debate and discourse. This doesn’t always mean two parties have to disagree in order for both to successfully remember the facts correctly. Instead, there should be an airing of disagreements where they exist.
Attempting to extinguish each other’s opposing view can only lead to a reduction of your ability to retain information. On the other hand, when disagreeing sides are willing to debate, this will generate critical thinking about a given topic. This will further cement the information in their heads for future use.
This has the added effect of expanding their knowledge base, which ensures the information they retain is accurate all-around.
Human evolution has made us into beings with incredible memories. While modern life seems to challenge this trait, modern men and women can rely on their natural abilities to adapt. After all, it’s what we do best.
