Mentalism is everywhere in our lives. Fictional characters such as Sherlock Holmesuse mentalism tricks to solve clues. Not to mention the highly successful US TV show – The Mentalist is based around this phenomenon. In addition, UK performer Derren Brown has made a career from using mentalism and performing tricks in his shows. So, what exactly is this technique and how do people use it?
 
A Personal Experience of Mentalism Tricks
 
I went to a Derren Brown show a couple of years ago. Derren picked members of the audience to participate in the show by throwing a frisbee. I managed to catch it.
 
 
My job was to choose a number from 100 to 200. I randomly picked a number which I wrote down and placed in an envelope. This number was integral of a series of other answers given by audience members who had also been randomly selected throughout the show.
 
To this day, I have no idea how he managed to guess all our answers. The weird thing is that they all related to one another in some way. Moreover, if he had got just one answer wrong, they all would have been wrong.
 
So what exactly are mentalism tricks? A mentalist, such as Derren Brown, will use a variety of ways to read you.

  5. Cold reading
  6. Power of suggestion
 
Let’s examine each method in turn and discover the tricks of mentalism:
 
Studying Body Language
 
A mentalist’s greatest strength is his or her ability to understand body language. Gifted mentalists will use this to supposedly read people’s minds. In other words – telepathy.
 
Actually, if you break down the word telepathy, you get ‘tele’, which means distant, and ‘pathy’, which means perception or feeling. This is exactly what a mentalist does to read your mind. They get a feeling from a distance and using their knowledge of body language to interpret this feeling.
 
When reading someone’s body language, the first thing a mentalist will do is establish a person’s base level. So they may start with fairly innocuous questions to gauge a normal reaction. For example, a person might have a habit of playing with their hair. If you didn’t know this was normal behaviour, you might assume they were hiding something later on in the questioning process.
 
Remember that mentalists take years to perfect their observations on body language. However, the main areas they’ll focus on are the face and hands.
 
 
On the face, they will look at movement around the mouth when talking. Does the person push their lips out when speaking? This is a sign they are forcing their words out and might not believe what they are saying. Likewise, do they cover their mouth while speaking?
 
This is an indicator of lying.
 
What is their blink rate like? Look out for the ‘blink sandwich’. This is a fast succession of blinks before a lie, no blinks during the lie, then another burst of fast blinks. This happens because the person lying will often stare at their accuser to make their lie seem more truthful.
 
However, their eyes cannot keep up the pretence and need to blink. Hence the rapid blinks either side.
Subconscious communication
 
Are you the sort of person that always seems to receive great customer service? Or is it the opposite? Would you be surprised to learn that either way it might be your subconscious communications that are influencing others and predicting these outcomes?
 
Imagine two scenarios:
In the first, you are late for work and rush into a coffee shop. You are flustered and unkempt and when it is your turn to be served, you bark ‘coffee’ at the server without looking up.
In the second scene, you have a day off and are meeting friends. You stroll in, walk up to the counter, smile at the server and ask for coffee.
 
These two scenes are practically identical but for a slight tweak in attitude. But it is your subconscious communication that is speaking clearly here. What kind of service do you suppose you would receive for each scenario?
 
Remember, if it is so easy for novices like ourselves to understand, imagine how a mentalist could use it to read a person?
 
Simple Trickery
 
Most of us would like to believe that we wouldn’t be fooled by magic tricks, especially the really easy ones. But some of the best are the simple tricks. If you like programmes such as Perception with US actor Eric McCormack as Dr Daniel Pierce, you’ll be used to seeing mentalism tricks such as these.
 
For instance, in one episode, Dr Pierce ‘demonstrates’ his mind-reading abilities. He consistently guesses correctly from a deck of cards the right symbol his colleague is thinking of. His colleague is amazed until Dr Pierce reveals that he can see the cards his colleague is holding in the reflection of the colleague’s glasses.
 
Understanding Human Behaviour
 
I had gone to a psychic fair held locally and had managed to book the last sitting with a popular clairvoyant.
 
Just as she began my reading, a lady walked up and sadly said ‘Is it too late to book?’ The clairvoyant said ‘Yes, I’m sorry, this is my last sitting,’ gesturing to me. The lady was about to turn away and the clairvoyant stood up, grabbed her hand and said ‘It will be alright you know, you’ve suffered a terrible tragedy, but they are in a better place now.’
 
The lady broke down and said ‘Thank you’ and went on her way. I wondered afterwards, how did she know? But of course, this clairvoyant had been in the business for decades. I’m not taking anything away from her. She was an extremely kind lady to get up and offer the woman some solace.
 
Having said that, did she have clairvoyant skills or did she simply understand that this lady needed some kind of closure?
 
Cold Reading
 
This is a particularly pernicious way of using mentalism tricks to get people to open up about themselves. You could relate it back to the previous story in fact.
 
 
Cold reading is when the reader has no clue at all about their audience. So they throw out random or general facts that could apply to almost anyone. It’s a little like your horoscopes. They are fishing for a bite. Once someone has bitten they can trawl them in with vague questions until they hit on the jackpot.
 
Cold reading uses a number of techniques to help them. They will use information about certain groups of people in order to pigeon-hole people. For example, young girls are likely to have problems with self-esteem. They’ll employ certain tactics such as ‘Barnum statements’ like ‘You feel anxious meeting new people’ or ‘When you try hard you succeed in whatever you do.’
 
Fishing is an example of a specific statement like ‘I can see a car accident here is significant’. Then, if this is picked up the audience will be impressed. If it is not the mentalist will quickly move on.
 
Power of Suggestion
 
Finally, the last but probably most important of our tricks involving mentalism is the power of suggestion. This is because it can be used in so many ways to manipulate us, and not just by performers. One person, Jay Olsen, found that his hobby of magic and illusion helped his career in psychology.
 
 
“Lots of what they said about attention and memory were just what magicians had been saying in a different way.” Jay Olson at McGill University in Quebec, Canada
 
Olsen devised a simple experiment in which he flicked through a deck of cards, then asked an audience member to choose one. When the card was revealed, Olsen took out the exact card from his jacket pocket.
 
So what was the mentalism trick he used? Olsen says that whilst shuffling through the pack, he lingered for a couple of milliseconds longer on the chosen card. This was enough for participants to choose it.
 
 
This easy manipulation technique has far-reaching implications, as Olsen is keen to point out. It even works on restaurant menus. Olsen says that we are more likely to choose from the very top or bottom of the menu. This is because these areas immediately attract our eyes.
 
So, while we think we might fancy the steak, really it’s just because it’s there at the top.
Final Thoughts
 
Mentalism tricks show just how easy it is for people to read our minds. But don’t forget, if they can read ours, we can use these same techniques and read theirs!

What Is Neuro-Linguistic Programming and 6 Signs Someone Is Using It on You

Did you know that manipulation and influence aren’t the same? One is conducted for selfish reasons, the other, to improve or change. While we know that outright manipulation is a negative thing, we cannot say this 100% about influence. For example, we influence our children in hopes they will become mature and respected adults, right? Yes, and influence can also be used in the workplace to help employees improve on the job. Scientists call this neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), and it can also be used for both good or bad reasons.
 
What is neuro-linguistic programming and where did it come from?
 
NLP is a psychological method that involves using body language, patterns, and expressions to gage and influence someone in one way or the other. This influence is designed to achieve a goal, either negative or positive.
 
Richard Bandler and John Grinder came up with the term “NLP” in the 70s’. Abandoning “talk therapy”, they decided to focus on tactics that bring behavioral change instead, and this is what neuro-linguistic programming was about. In fact, it’s an evolution of certain aspects of hypnotherapy.
 
But unlike hypnotherapy, which requires the subject to be under suggestion while in a trance, NLP uses subtle suggestions on the subconscious mind of a person who is wide awake. And this person never even knows it’s happening.
 
How does it work?
 
By watching slight clues, a person can use NLP to determine a few basic things about another individual. Neuro-linguistic programming looks at nervous movements, skin flush, dilation of pupils, and even the movement of the eyes. These little indicators answer three questions.
  • What sense is the person using? (sight, hearing, smell)
  • Which side of the brain is currently being used
  • How their brain storage works and how they utilize information
 
After these questions are answered, then the NPLer can mimic these. Copying these indicators helps build rapport between the two. In order to “influence” someone, it’s best to be in a sort of agreement with their body language. While it can be difficult to completely change the mindset of another person, you can use NLP to guide them toward a decision they were rolling over in their brains just by copying them.
 
However, this technique can be used on you, and you might not even know it. No matter if its manipulation or influence, it can definitely feel like you’re being unwillingly persuaded if not used in a completely positive manner – a manner that is productive leading to an improvement in your life.
 
Regardless, here are signs that say NLP is being used on you:
 
1. Copying your mannerisms
 
Pay attention to those around you. When you do certain things, or use certain body language, does someone seem to be copying those things? If you’re with a friend, is your friend doing this to you? Watch them.
 
Are they crossing their legs when you do? Are they pushing strands of hair away from their face right after you make this movement? Some people are better at covering these movements than others, but if you really watch, you will catch them.
 
2. They use the magic touch
 
Neuro-linguistic programming enables a person to have what seems to be a magic touch. For instance, if you’re upset about something and they touch your shoulder, and then, later on, they touch your shoulder again and you get upset about the same topic, they have anchored you.
 
According to Bandler and Grinder, this actually works. If you notice it happening, then you know someone is using the NLP technique on you.
 
3. They use vague language
 
If you’ve ever been hypnotized, then you’ve been under the power of vague language. This type of gibberish doesn’t mean anything. It’s used to get you into a certain state of mind. It’s not really nonsense, as far as understanding the actual words, it’s just sentences that seem to say a lot but actually say nothing.
 
Let me see if I can give you an example of this: “I see you are entering the space of your present being and letting go of what you are in the present but repeating the present in order to enter that space.” Whew, that was hard for me to concoct, but hopefully, it made no sense so I could prove my point. Anyway, NLPers use this sort of language.
 
4. The pressure to make quick decisions
 
You will notice that someone is using neuro linguistic programming when you are being pressured to make a quick decision about something. If you’re like me, you need some time to think things over before making many choices. Not everything in life can be a quick yes or no.
 
In fact, along with pressure for quick decision making, you will be pushed ever so slightly toward the answer they want to hear. Watch out, and tell them that you need more time.
5. They use layered language
 
People who are skilled in neuro-linguistic programming use layered language to get what they want. In case you don’t know what layered language is, here’s an example: “I think we should all be productive, sharp, and brave enough to make quick decisions…you know, not like slackers.”
 
Remember, I just mentioned pressuring people about making quick decisions. Well, that layered language will work in two ways, it will pressure you and it will intend to bring about guilt for needing time to think about things. Watch out for hidden tricks within sentences.
 
6. Giving permission to do what they want
 
One of the most interesting signs of those who have undergone NLP training is permission pressure. If you’re the NLPer, then maybe you want someone to give you money. Just say, “Go ahead and let go of your selfish nature. Here, try it with me”, or “Feel free to use me as next first selfless deed.”
 
While these may not be the best decisions, I think you can get the idea of what I’m saying. You’re supposed to think that your interests come first and they are important, but with negative usage of NLP, it’s the opposite.
 
You will know them by the way they give you permission to do what they want. It sounds twisty and it is. They will say, “Feel free to let yourself go and have a good time”, all the while they are getting to take advantage of you. If they happen to have good intentions, then maybe they’re truly trying to help you relax. Either way, be wary of anything like this.
 
Honestly, NLP can be used for good or bad
 
Yes, it’s true, while there are those who try to take advantage of you with neuro-linguistic programming, there are also those who use it to help you become a better person, slightly nudging you toward something you need to do. In this case, it’s a good thing.
 
If you have a good heart, you may want to learn neuro-linguistic programming to help someone. You can learn to detect when something is wrong with someone, or when you need to intervene in order to sway their decision-making process, which is rare but sometimes needed. You see, it can serve as a good tool for many people.
 
However, I will just leave it at this. You should always be aware of your surroundings, no matter what. If someone is your true friend, you will know it soon enough. If you gain the ability to use NLP, make sure you use it for the good of society and not for the bad. Let’s keep moving forward.

Recognize the importance of listening
 
Mastering your conversation skills may first bring to mind improving how you speak. However, the art of a good conversation involves excellent listening skills. We can get so wrapped up in what we plan to say in our conversations that we lose our listening skills. As a result, we don’t pay attention to what the other person is saying.
 
Psychologists Carl Rogers and Richard Farson pioneered the concept of active listening. This is where you are fully focused on what the other person is saying.
 
In addition, you allow them the time to say their piece without interrupting to offer advice. While it may feel like there are some silences, these are important to allow your companion to say what they need to say. This demonstrates that you are really listening to them.
 
Respond appropriately
 
When you practice active listening, there needs to be an appropriate response when the other person has finished speaking. Another important conversation skill is the ability to summarise what you have heard.
 
This serves to reaffirm what the other person has said. Thus showing them that you listened and understand. Demonstrate you are interested in what they have to say by actively listening. Then you can be fully engaged in the conversation.
Ask questions
 
We have all been subjected to a one-sided conversation in our time. Experiencing someone purely talk about themselves can be frustrating. Our self-esteem is knocked if we feel that what we say is not valued. An excellent conversation skill to improve is the art of asking questions.
 
While we may not like to admit it, talking about ourselves is enjoyable. Therefore, asking the other person questions about what they are saying is a key way to ensure that you have a conversation to remember.
 
Find some similarities
 
Of course, you don’t want the conversation to be one-sided. A conversation is a two-way street after all. A good conversation skill to put to work which will get your own experiences and ideas into the conversation is to find a similarity between yourself and the person you are speaking with.
 
Finding common ground will help the conversation flow. It also won’t be surprising to hear that we generally like people more when they are similar to us. So this trick will help build relationships with both friends and work colleagues.
 
Body language
 
It isn’t just what we say that gets a good conversation going. It’s how we use non-verbal communication that is also a key conversation skill. Maintaining good eye contact is difficult.
 
However, it lets someone know you are engaged in the conversation. Facing someone as they speak is also a good way of letting them know they have your full attention.
Use names
 
Use a person’s name when you talk to them. You often see politicians do this. They create a powerful bond with the listener. This is because we intrinsically link an individual’s identity with their name.
 
For this reason, using a person’s name (and ensuring you say it correctly) is a good conversational skill to master. Especially when you have just met someone.
 
Saying their name will help someone feel endeared to you. You are attempting to capture their attention. Research has highlighted the importance of using names in our interactions. It demonstrates that using a person’s name can mean that they are more likely to help you and make a purchase from you.
 
Offer a compliment
 
It might sound cheesy, but complimenting someone is a great way to keep the conversation going. Especially if you feel like it is drawing to a close. Not only will it make the recipient feel good about themselves, but it will also open the door for another topic of conversation to continue.
 
Offering a compliment is also a great conversation starter. Particularly if you are searching for something to kick off the conversation.
 
There is nothing wrong with small talk
 
While some find small talk a bore, it is often the way to get into more fulfilling and deeper conversations. Small talk is an important conversation skill. It gets the conversation started. In fact, in some situations, it is incredibly useful.
 
For example, there is a range of topics that are common ground for many people. Just think of the weather, asking someone what they have done today, or commenting on an event you are both at.

People with Asperger’s aren’t inflicted with all negative traits. Some Asperger’s traits can seem amazing.
 
In case you’re not familiar with Asperger’s syndrome, it’s considered a high-functioning form of autism. And when people, who aren’t well-educated on these syndromes, learn that Asperger’s is a form of autism, it doesn’t bring to mind advanced intelligence or creativity.
 
Thank goodness there are many of us who are familiar with autism, and with this familiarity, we can teach others.
 
What you think you know about people with Asperger’s
 
People see spectrums of autism as negative traits. They notice the tics, the awkward social issues, or the strange outspoken qualities as hindrances. Some people say the autistic lack empathy, and cannot make eye contact during conversation.
 
There are quite a few negative traits, according to society, but there’s much more to it than that. Not understanding the whole story can be seen as ignorance, and can definitely be insulting. So why don’t we look a bit deeper?
 
What you should know about people with Asperger’s
 
If you speak to someone who exhibits Asperger’s traits, you will notice many things. They are much like the rest of us, but they’re completely different at the same time. To be honest, their strengths greatly overshadow their weaknesses and even resemble types of superpowers.
 
People who are labeled with Asperger’s can simply amaze those we consider normal.
 
A few Asperger’s traits that look like superpowers:
 
1. Incredible memories
 
One Asperger trait is having the ability to use the skills of intelligence. This means some people who have Asperger’s can look at a landscape, turn away and paint the entire landscape from memory. No, they don’t have to turn back to see things they may have missed because they really don’t miss anything, even the finest details.
 
These people are considered “savants”. But not all Asperger’s have this ability. Some have a heightened memory, while others embody other “superpowers”.
 
2. Super perceptive
 
Everyone notices things, especially obvious or large things. It’s the small things that many people do not notice, but as for people with Asperger’s, they notice them. What’s more, those who have Asperger’s, are so perceptive that they notice almost everything.
 
 
This includes subtle facial expressions, body language, and even things that people want to say but do not. That’s true, it’s almost as if they can read minds, having the ability to know exactly what someone’s going to say.
 
This also includes noticing patterns in the actions of others. I don’t know about you, but to me, it surely seems like an above-average trait.
 
3. Above-average intelligence
 
High IQs are common among autistic people, especially those with Asperger’s. Although not all of them are savants, those who have those supernatural memory abilities and etc., they still have the ability to excel above others in their classes during school and in the workplace.
 
Of course, people with Asperger’s sometimes have a hard time getting work due to awkwardness. If they are hired, they generally offer intelligence that greatly improves the workplace and sales within the workplace. All this is due to intelligence, great intelligence.
 
4. Unstoppable
 
Asperger’s sometimes makes people unstoppable when it comes to completing tasks or solving problems. Giving up on issues or situations just isn’t an option. It’s called high perseverance and determination. Even if they happen to fail at something, even twice, or three times, they will go right back at it again.
 
Imagine a superhero getting pounded over and over into the ground by the villain, well that doesn’t matter. Eventually, this Asperger trait will show the hero standing up again and continuing to pursue their goals. Now if that isn’t superhuman, I don’t know what is.
 
5. Inhuman calmness
 
Most of the time during a crisis, the average person will get upset. Even the calmest of people can sometimes become shaken by traumas. As for people with Asperger’s, a crisis, or a negative situation doesn’t phase them. One trait of Asperger’s is the incredible ability to remain calm during the worse situations or storms.
 
 
Could it be due to strict routines or intelligence? It could be a combination of both. Either way, when the poop hits the fan, those with Asperger’s worry not. They simply take a moment to start looking for the most intelligent solution.
 
And don’t forget, they are unstoppable, so you know the problem will be eliminated, one way or the other.
Focusing on Aspergian superpowers
 
As I mentioned in the beginning, those with Asperger’s have problems dealing with awkward and difficult moments, and even have a fairly high rate of suicide, if coping with the downside of the syndrome becomes too much to handle.
 
However, when recognized correctly, and appreciated, Aspergians can really make the most of their superpower abilities and live a great and productive life. Many of them can achieve things that others of us could only dream.
 
So, before you judge autistic people or those with Asperger’s, remember these amazing qualities listed above. You never know when one of these super amazing individuals will cross your path and come to your rescue.
 
Just like other syndromes, illnesses, or unique cases, let’s end all stigma and see people as the beautiful creatures that they are.

Asperger’s Syndrome is a disorder characterized by poor social skills – however, some believe there are signs it will contribute to our evolution.
Before I explain why, I’d like to tell you a story. Years ago, I worked for a government office that dealt with sick leave and benefits payments. One of my jobs was to work out when a person could start receiving benefits.

A person would receive 28 weeks of Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) paid by the employer, after which they could start getting benefits. The problem was it was a really tricky date to work out. 28 weeks included weekends and many of us got the start date for benefit wrong.

However, there was one guy in our office who, if you gave him the start date of SSP, could tell you in a nanosecond the exact date 28 weeks later. He never got it wrong. He was also amazing with birth and death dates of kings and queens, battle dates. Actually, come to think of it, any history date.

But, he wasn’t good socially. He didn’t ‘get’ jokes, he had no sense of humour and he struggled in social situations. Now I think about him I realise he probably had the signs of Asperger’s.
What Are the Signs of Asperger’s Syndrome?


So what exactly is Asperger’s Syndrome? Asperger’s is characterized by difficulties in social interactions and trouble in processing nonverbal language. A person with Asperger’s will have problems reading social cuesand find comfort in repeating patterns or behaviours.
Lorna Wing, M.D., was an English psychiatrist who introduced the term ‘Asperger’s Syndrome’. She divided Asperger’s signs into three key areas:
  1. Speech: One-sided conversations, sometimes pedantic, focused on one particular subject of interest to the person with Asperger’s, monotonous intonation, repetitive speech.
  2. Nonverbal communication: Inability to understand facial expressions, a lack of facial expressions themselves, cannot comprehend other’s expressions or gestures.
  3. Social interaction: Does not understand unwritten rules of social behaviour, acts inappropriately, e.g. proximity to others, stares for too long, says the wrong things, wears the wrong clothes, responds in the wrong way. Has a lack of empathy for others. Inability to form friendships or relationships.
For example, my friend’s child gets extremely upset if he does not have his meals served in a particular purple bowl every day. He cannot eat his food if any of it is touching the other food in the bowl and he has to know in advance what he is eating.
But how can being poorly equipped to deal with social situations and insisting on a purple bowl for lunchtimes aid human evolution?

Why Asperger’s Could Be the Next Stage of Human Evolution

Well, it’s all to do with intelligence. As well as having certain impairments, people with Asperger’s show signs of skills in particular areas of intelligence.
For example, they tend to have extremely good memories, which allows them to learn by rote. Their habit of becoming interested in one or two subjects gives this amazing memory full capacity to absorb every minute detail. They become experts in one specialized field.
And this is where it gets interesting. In the past, you would call men like this one thing – geeks. However, nowadays, these so-called ‘geeks’ are responsible for some of the biggest tech companies, social media platforms, and communication industries on the planet.
And the great thing about these men geeks (and they usually are men) is that in today’s society, they get to meet incredibly bright and socially-capable women. These so-called geeks hook up with socially-adept women and produce intelligent but socially-aware offspring.
Just think about the kinds of people we are talking about.

Famous People Who Show Signs of Asperger’s Syndrome

Thomas Jefferson

Founding Father and third president of the United States, Jefferson was a shy man that mumbled and walked around with a mocking bird on his shoulder. However, he did write the Declaration of Independence in one go.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Mozart wrote his first symphony at the age of five and went onto write over 600 pieces. Reports of the time state that he was woefully impaired when it came to social interaction. He also had trouble expressing his emotions to others.

Michelangelo

Michelangelo’s incredible concentration makes him a candidate for Asperger’s syndrome. Not only was he obsessive over his work, but he was also completely unable to show emotion. His extraordinary memory allowed him to retain sketches for the Sistine Chapel.
“Michelangelo was aloof and a loner. Like the architect John Nash (1752-1835), who also had high-functioning autism, he had few friends.” Dr Arshad and Prof Fitzgerald

Albert Einstein

What sort of brain do you need to work out the theory of relativity? Einstein is considered to be one of the greatest scientists of all time, but he did show signs of Asperger’s.
He had trouble recognising social cues but was able to narrowly focus his attention to solve one of our greatest scientific mysteries.

Charles Darwin

Darwin’s fascination with insects, shells and categorizing indicates he had Asperger’s. The man responsible for changing the way we view evolution was prone to bouts of solitude and obsessed with nature.

Sir Isaac Newton

Newton may have developed the theory of gravity but by all accounts, he was a vindictive, unforgiving, calculating, quick-tempered and petty man. All signs of Asperger’s.

Woody Allen

Woody Allen makes neurotic films and has admitted to sharing neurotic traitshimself:
“I am a neurotic in a more benign way. I mean I have a lot of neurotic habits. I don’t like to go into elevators, I don’t go through tunnels, I like the drain in the shower to be in the corner and not in the middle.”

Tim Burton

The famed film director Tim Burton was watching a documentary about autismand said to his long-term partner Helena Bonham-Carter that was how he felt as a child.

Chris Packham

Chris Packham is a British naturalist who has a remarkable breadth of knowledge on the natural world and wildlife. Despite having Asperger’s, he has carved out a successful career on TV.

Mark Zuckerberg

The founder of Facebook has been described as a ‘robot’, he wears the same ‘uniform’ of a grey t-shirt and jeans every day so he doesn’t have to worry about what to wear. However, his company is worth around $230 billion.

So why is it that someone with signs of Asperger’s is likely to do well?

What is it about this condition that makes a person so successful? There’s the intelligence side of it, of course, but also, some experts now believe it is the actual lack of social skills that is a contributing factor.
Think about it for a moment. You have an idea that you think will make millions, but in your normal everyday life, you feel constricted by societal rulesand unspoken boundaries. You don’t want to speak out for fear of ridicule, or people thinking you are over-reaching or narcissistic.
But the person who has Asperger’s has none of these boundariesThey don’t follow society’s rules. They are not even aware of them. As a result, they just go right ahead, pitch their ideas and get on with the job.
Tech investor Peter Thiel believes we could all benefit from a little touch of Asperger’s.
“We need to ask what is it about our society where those of us who do not suffer from Asperger’s are at some massive disadvantage because we will be talked out of our interesting, original, creative ideas before they’re even fully formed.”
My final point is that these days, we are all spending more time on our smartphones, our computers, laptops, and in the artificial world. As such, our social interaction is gradually being reduced.
Therefore, being able to connect socially might not be such a big deal in the decades to come anyway. Perhaps it’s time for those with signs of Asperger’s to shine.

Just talking to someone isn’t going to work anymore. You must understand the different types of communication.
I can strike up a conversation with anyone, to be honest. But this doesn’t mean I’m utilizing a healthy form of communication. Some types of communication do not work as well as others, and this is why we have to learn how to master the right words, phrases, and attitudes in order to be successful in life.

What Are the Communication Types?

Being able to communicate effectively is an art. We start with nothing and then move on to transfer knowledge and feelings to another.
First off, there are two basic forms of communication, or rather categories. One type is based on different channels and the other is based on purpose and style. But let’s break it down a bit further.

Here are the basic types of communication:

  • Verbal communication
  • Non-verbal communication
  • Visual communication
  • Written communication
    • Formal communication
    • Informal communication
Let’s talk about all these types in more detail and also discuss the ways we can master them.

1. Verbal communication

One of the most basic types of true communication is verbal form. Verbal communication is simple and straight forward, and most people prefer this method. Why? Because verbal communication allows you to get your point across quickly and with fewer misunderstandings.
Take, for instance, scheduling a business meeting can be done by email but would work more effectively in a face to face situation. This choice is professional and can even be done via skype or any other form of online verbal or visual communication tool.
So, I would say it’s one of the most common and popular forms of getting your message across.

How to master verbal communication?

There are a few ways you can master your words. Remember, there is great power behind what you say. So, let’s practice a few ways to control what comes out of your mouth:
  • Depending on who you’re talking to, you will want to adjust your vocabulary. This is because people want to feel comfortable around you. If you feel like you’re talking to a more intellectual group of people, you can use an expanded vocabulary. If you’re in a group of less educated individuals, you should use basic vocabulary. Of course, do not let this variance be known to the one you’re talking to. It’s insulting.
  • When speaking, try not to talk in monotone. Most people follow what you’re saying much better when you alter the pitch of your voice.
  • The speed at which you talk is also something to understand. Speaking fast means excitement while speaking slowly means you wish to convey an important message and you want them to understand you. This will depend greatly on the situation.

2. Non-verbal communication

Non-verbal forms of communication are also considered interpersonal. These are seen as body language, basically. It’s how you appear when you walk into the room or sit in your chair during a meeting.
Do you slouch or sit up straight? Do you walk with your head up and with confidence? These are different ways to communicate great meaning to others.

How to master non-verbal communication?

  • As mentioned above, the way you walk says lots about what you’re communicating. Walking upright and with your head up conveys confidence while walking with a slouch says you are unsure of yourself.
  • Fidgeting means you are nervous
  • Making eye contact conveys honesty and also lets the other person know that what they say is important.

3. Visual communication

If you understand how visual aids are used in presentations, then you will understand this message transference. The use of visual communication is seen in video representations of products and even brochures.
When a company wishes to get a quick message across about some product or service they sell, visual communication is best. It’s done without words or letters at some times and brings a striking message to customers.
Visual communications can also be seen in informal settings like between friends. If someone wants to tell a friend about a problem, taking a picture of broken objects or injuries can get more across than words. It’s a quick way to understand the urgency of the situation.
No words are needed when a serious visual communication is used.

How to master visual communication?

  • Basically, the best way to master visual communications is to create a clear and concise image of your idea. Whether you are trying to sell a product or a service, visualization is attractive to the eye and creates a desire to learn more.
  • Another way to master visual communication is to pair it successfully with non-verbal and verbal communication. Remember, how you speak and how you appear will increase interest in the image you wish to share.

4. Written communication

With written communication, there are two subtypes. One is formal and the other is informal.

Formal communication

With formal communication, you see the use of professional emails, memos, and reports. This form of communication must be taken seriously and acted upon immediately.
The workplace uses written communication to save time by sending an important message to multiple people. You can clearly see the advantages of such an exchange.
How to master formal communication?
  • Mastering formal written communication is all about structure, grammar, and tone. You are usually taken more seriously when your emails and reports are constructed properly.
  • When important communication must be sent in a timely manner, DO NOT BE LATE! I cannot stress this enough.
  • Understand the person you are speaking to and whether they appreciate a professional tone or a casual one. Some people respond better to totally professional words in emails while others prefer a friendly down-to-earth acquaintance. It’s best to do a background check, if possible, on who you’re contacting before you ever talk to them through email.

Informal communication

With informal communication, this means sending messages via social media platforms.
Although businesses may use this mode of communication as well, many others can send humorous statements and quick reminders with these tools. It’s like the old music lyric, “ I heard it through the grapevine”.
Yes, in some ways, this is a type of transference that isn’t always reputable but many times entertaining.
Mastering informal communication
  • When it comes to informal communication, like talking to friends or family, there aren’t any set in stone rules. However, being considerate is best anyway. Most friends and family wish to be treated with a certain amount of respect when being spoken to, even via social media.
  • When communicating informally, you must also understand who you’re talking to. If you know the other person, it may be okay to joke around and poke insults. However, if they are fairly new acquaintances, you might want to hold back on the hilarity.
  • Do not use slander, racism, sexism, or gender insults when posting comments on social media. This is hurtful and it’s bullying. It’s just plain wrong. Learn to be tolerant of differences and treat people the way you wish to be treated. Maybe your lifestyle isn’t their cup of tea either.

Keep lines of communication open

Understanding the types of communication is just the start. It’s also important to communicate in general instead of keeping things bottled up. It’s important to be open about what needs to be done, what needs to be said and just presenting a friendly greeting every now and then.
Without communication, we lose a great deal of credibility in our actions and appearance. So, first, let’s learn the different types of successful communication, and then let’s learn to master them as well. I know you can do it, so let’s give it a shot.

The body language of lying is something that is very important to learn. This is not to say that everybody you meet will be a liar and a cheat, of course.

Simply put, knowing how to spot the signs of lying will make your life easier. Body language is a dead giveaway when it comes to this kind of thing. Knowing when somebody’s body language is giving away their true thoughts and intentions is critical. When it comes to business relationships, in particular, knowing the body language of lying is critical.
The underlying theory of the body language of lying is that people can’t control that body language. When body language and oral language matches up, everything is fine. Otherwise, something is wrong.

Inconsistencies

People normally have a specific body language. This tip is only useful if you know someone well enough to know what their normal is, unfortunately. Sometimes people who normally act one way can act in another. The body language of lying will tell you that this means that they are not being honest with you.
One prominent example of this is when people use the wrong hand to gesture with. Most people will use their dominant hand to make gestures which are important. If they suddenly switch, that means that the person is most likely lying to you.

The eyes have it

Prolonged eye contact isn’t normal, but you should expect people to look at you at least some of the time. If someone is not looking at you, then this can be a sign of lying. It can mean that people are very uncomfortablewith what they are saying.
If someone is not looking at you, and their eyes are darting around, this can also be a sign. Darting eyes indicates discomfort. It means that people feel trapped by the situation, and also that they are trying to get out of it. Often by any means necessary.
Rapid blinking is another good tool to see the body language of lying. Most people blink a certain number of times a minute – and men blink less than women. If someone is blinking rapidly, it could just mean that they have something in their eye. It could, however, also mean that they are lying. People blink more rapidly when they are stressed.
As a corollary to this, check how long people close their eyes for. A blink doesn’t last very long. If someone is closing their eyes for longer, they are doing it as a defence mechanism. This defence mechanism could be in relation to them lying to you.
The way people look can sometimes be a giveaway. The direction of someone’s gaze often corresponds to their dominant hand. If a right-handed person looks left, they are accessing their imagination.
The same goes for left-handed people, except in reverse. The body language of lying has them act in opposition to their own normal. Think of why someone might need to use their imagination while talking to you…it could be because they are lying.

Smile!

Many people have a fake smile to go with their real one. A real smile will have an effect on the face as a whole. People get smile wrinkles and nose scrunches when they smile.
If the person you are talking to has them, it is a real smile. If not, then it is not a real smile. A fake smile could be a sign that people are lying to you.

Touch

People quite often touch their face when they lie. This is part of them being uncomfortable with what they are doing and saying. Keep an eye out for it! This part of the body language of lying is especially true for people who don’t normally touch their faces when speaking to someone.

Movement

Fidgeting is very common for people who are uncomfortable. Much like blinking, it is a defence mechanism, meant to keep us on the ready for anything bad happening.
It can function as a way of detecting lies with the body language of lying. If someone is fidgeting, it can mean that they are uncomfortable with what they are saying. If you want to see if someone is lying, watch for any untoward movements.
Body language, as has been said, should match the situation. It is very difficult to conceal your own body language, which is why so many people keep an eye on it. Whatever you are saying is mimicked in whatever you are doing. This can make lies and deceit very easy to spot, particularly when you are talking to someone you know well.
It would have a detrimental effect on your life to constantly be on the watch for signs of lying. It would probably be best if you didn’t try and find out if everybody you speak to is lying, but it can be helpful. In business terms, or when having a difficult conversation, it can be very helpful.
