6 Smart Ways to Shut Down Nosey People without Being Rude.

We have all dealt with nosey people in our lives. Some individuals just don’t have a sensitivity filter. We see this all the time:
 
Direct questions from people you don’t know
 
Intrusive or highly personal conversations that do not feel appropriate
 
Controversial statements made to elicit a response
So how can you manage nosey people, and deflect uncomfortable conversations without causing offense?
 
Tact is a valuable skill, and those who do not understand personal boundaries lack it. Here are some ways to use your politeness to avoid being drawn into conversations, or answering questions, that you do not wish to.
 
Just say you aren’t comfortable!
 
This isn’t always the easiest response, but in some situations simply telling someone you’d prefer not to discuss it is the quickest way to shut down the topic.
 
For example, if someone asks whether you are planning to have children, you could try responding, ‘I’m sorry; I’d prefer not to talk about it. Why don’t you tell me about your family?’
 
Very often personal questions aren’t meant to cause upset or offense. Particularly coming from a stranger, the question might be intended as a conversation starter where they are looking for something in common. Turning it around can deflect the discussion and allow them to talk instead.
 
Use your intuition
 
It is sometimes quite obvious that you are encountering a nosey person who is gearing up to ask all sorts of intrusive questions. Situations like sitting next to nosey people on a plane are perfect examples, where you can’t walk away and don’t particularly want to talk about the details of your divorce at length with a stranger.
 
If you feel like an uncomfortable conversation is about to begin, use a distraction technique to signal that you don’t wish to chat. Put in your headphones, start watching a movie, open your book or take a nap.
 
Are they being nosey?
 
Situations that are emotional for us might not be seen as sensitive areas for everyone. If you are asked an awkward question, try pausing to consider why you think this person is being nosey.
 
They might innocently be asking a question, and mean no offense by it. It is easy to bristle at something relevant or causing stress in your life, so remember that other people won’t know you have just been through a break-up, and haven’t intended to upset you by asking.
 
Maintain conversational boundaries
 
Some people are intrusive because they love sharing all the juicy details of their own intimate life! However, this doesn’t apply to everybody, and you need to be able to stand your ground and not answer personal questions that you find inappropriate.
 
There are a few responses that can help demonstrate that you don’t wish to answer, without seeming rude or showing that you might have taken offense:
  • Why do you ask that?
  • I’m afraid there aren’t enough hours in the day for me to answer that!
  • That’s an interesting question – what about you?
  • It’s a sensitive subject for me, so why don’t you tell me about your experience?
  • That is a bit too complicated to get into!
 
Money, money, money
 
Aside from personal relationships, one of the awkward questions most often asked is about money. Some of us are happy to share what we paid for our new home, or how much we are investing in our children’s education. But for a lot of people, finances are private and not something they wish to talk about in polite conversation.
 
If someone asks a financial question, they might have a very good reason. For example, they might be considering buying a home in a similar area, or be thinking about switching schools and be interested to know the comparable cost.
 
Try not to balk, and answer with consideration but without feeling pressured to disclose anything that you’d rather not.
  • More than I like to think about, to be honest!
  • Well, you know what house prices are like in this area, but we love having the park nearby…
  • Thanks for noticing! If you like it, they have a great new range at the store
 
Deflection
 
If you are asked a question you deem inappropriate, you can divert the conversation into an area that you feel more comfortable with.
 
People love to talk, and so asking a question is a great way to switch attention away from you, and back at the nosey person asking the questions! For example:
 
A colleague says: ‘You’re in late today – have you been at a job interview?’
 
Rather than squirming at either lying or disclosing confidential information, you could respond:
  • ‘I’m sure you missed me, but I’m here now! What’s happened today – have I missed anything exciting?’
  • ‘Better late than never! How’s everything going so far?’
  • ‘Yeah I know, I’m sure I have a million emails backed up waiting for me! Are you guys busy today too?’
 
Whatever your response, know that a person with good intentions might not mean to ask uncomfortable questions. However, if you know somebody is deliberately trying to put you on the back foot, don’t be afraid to just walk away.
 
It is better for our peace of mind not to rise to the bait, so laugh it off or shrug if you can, or simply don’t answer. You do not have to validate yourself and have the right to keep things personal if you don’t feel happy talking about them with nosey people.

Several brave thinkers, including Jacque Fresco of the Venus Project and Colin Turner of the Free World Charter, have proposed ways in which a future society could thrive if we eliminated money and trade and instead built a resource-based economy.

While it is still not commonly held in mainstream discourse that humanity could survive and even thrive without some form of monetary exchange, more and more people that are starting to trace their general discontent about contemporary society to its source are finding money and profit motive at the root of it.
 
Perhaps the first of the knee-jerk reactions some people might have to the idea of shifting into a money-free system is the sinking feeling of watching their hard-earned wealth evaporate into nothingness, which they might equate with abject poverty. We are so programmed to equate money with abundance that we don’t understand what abundance truly is.
 
At the heart of it our ‘net’ abundance is shared, and is grounded in the resources available in nature on the planet. The aggregate of these natural resources not only represents our potential abundance but our very survival. A money system grants ownership to many of these resources, and makes it exponentially easier for those with abundance to get more abundance at the expense of the vast majority of people. A money system is, in some ways, antithetical to the proper management and distribution of these resources. Without money, each individual would naturally be entitled to their share of all the resources in the world, and that would never change. But how would such a system work?
 
Resource-Based Economy
 
Jacque Fresco, founder of the Venus Project, believes that the world has reached a level of technology that will allow us to build fully self-sustaining communities all over the world which, when optimally designed, will provide not only an unimaginably high level of abundance for all its residents, but a far greater sense of shared purpose within a community. This vision is grounded in the principles of a Resource-Based Economy:
 
In a Resource Based Economy all goods and services are available to all people without the need for means of exchange such as money, credits, barter or any other means. For this to be achieved all resources must be declared as the common heritage of all Earth’s inhabitants. Equipped with the latest scientific and technological marvels mankind could reach extremely high productivity levels and create abundance of resources.–Venus Project website
 
Without profit motive, individuals within the community will naturally turn their energy towards the efficient maintenance of the infrastructure and problem-solving and innovation for the collective, as the happiness and well-being of the community is naturally equated with one’s own happiness and well-being.

No Need For Trade
 
Since money is nothing more than a medium of exchange, it is only in removing the convention of exchange or ‘trade’ itself that then renders money obsolete. That’s why a Resource-Based Economy proposes that ‘all resources must be declared as the common heritage of all Earth’s inhabitants.’
 
In his TedX talk, Colin Turner really questions the idea that ‘trade’ is the only organizational model for life on the planet, and in fact outlines the ways in which trade is actually antithetical to human abundance and well-being:
 
 
We all more or less accept trade as being the de facto way of operating our society, so much so that we even see it as some kind of universal law. But it might surprise you to know actually that trade has only existed in relatively recent years, that in 90% of our modern human history we didn’t actually trade at all, there still are no archaeological traces of trade. In these early tribal, agrarian communities what actually happened was there was an implied understanding that everyone in the tribe looked after each other. And this was how the tribes operated for perhaps the vast majority of our early human history.
 
So we see trade now as a very important way of doing business, and you have to say that trade works, I get what I want and you get what you want and we all go home happy. But when you actually scratch the surface a little bit more about how trade actually pans out in the real world, it’s not such a nice story. It seems to be a better theory than actually works out in practice.
 
For example, the most obvious case is, about 3 billion people in the world today live on $2.50 or less a day–many of them much, much less than that. Obviously they are wracked with starvation or dying of curable diseases, so, I mean, you have to ask yourself, is trade really working for them, for those people? Clearly, it isn’t.
 
 
 
 
Colin Turner is the founder of The Free World Charter, which currently has 58,611 signatories among people from 215 different countries (and would welcome yours, if you are so inclined). The charter constitutes a set of principles that really formalizes the notion that all human individuals are entitled to maintain an equal share of the Earth’s resources, but it also outlines the natural responsibilities and practices that each individual would assume in order to live optimally and harmoniously together in a money-free community and world. Here are the ten principles:
The highest concern of humanity is the combined common good of all living species and biosphere.
Life is precious in all its forms, and free to flourish in the combined common good.
Earth’s natural resources are the birthright of all its inhabitants, and free to share in the combined common good.
Every human being is an equal part of a worldwide community of humans, and a free citizen of Earth.
Our community is founded on the spirit of cooperation and an understanding of nature, provided through basic education.
Our community provides for all its members the necessities of a healthy, fulfilling and sustainable life, freely and without obligation.
Our community respects the limits of nature and its resources, ensuring minimal consumption and waste.
Our community derives its solutions and advances progress primarily through the application of logic and best available knowledge.
Our community acknowledges its duty of care and compassion for members who are unable to contribute.
Our community acknowledges its responsibility to maintain a diverse and sustainable biosphere for all future life to enjoy
 
These are certainly not the final words on which principles should truly define a future society and world free of money, but in reading them one can clearly grasp the overall essence of the kind of mindset we will need to develop and implement in our lives if we are to shift into this new paradigm.

Walking Away From A Money Economy
 
The shift we are looking for here is grounded in a conscious move by the individuals of this planet away from a model of competition and towards a model of cooperation. We are all quite familiar with both, as we surely have an ample amount of experience in both ways of relating to the people around us. If you could choose right now, which kind of model would you want as the basis for the entire planet?
 
Some might argue that the competitive/trade/money paradigm has been instrumental in getting us to make progress, especially technologically, which we may not have achieved by remaining with the cooperative tribal model. There may be some truth in this. But does it not seem that, at this time in history, most of us have had it with the debt, scarcity, and inequality that is a hallmark of the money model? Are we not hungering for more love, cooperation and shared abundance imbued in the very organizational structures we create for ourselves to live?
 
Understand that making this change is not as simple as going to the United Nations or other authoritative world body, as Jacque Fresco has already done. Presenting a compelling vision of a future without money to the benefit of all of humanity does not automatically mean that the world authority will implement it right away. The powers behind world authority like the UN are actually made up of those who have the most money. What we see going on in the public arena are essentially the machinations of the puppets they control.
 
This is nothing new. An overall system that maintains power by the few has been in place ever since money and exchange were introduced. While in the past this wealth was protected over generations and generations by certain families who were the visible ‘royalty,’ ‘noblemen’ and ‘aristocracy’ of the day, today’s world only differs in the sense that these powers are more hidden from sight, while countries maintain the illusion of having some form of ‘democracy.’
 
The point is that we will never be able to elicit the help of our authority if we want to abandon our current money economy. Those in authority, who at the very top own a vast percentage of the world’s resources, certainly believe they would have the most to lose if we moved to a model founded on equally-shared abundance. What we actually need to do is elicit the help of each other, energizing important movements and fostering an awakening as to how powerful we actually are as a collective. When a critical mass of us begin marching in step to a new way of life, the current authority will have no power to stop us.

The Takeaway
 
A money-free society and world can certainly work from the standpoint of creating abundance for everyone on the planet. What is needed is a new awareness founded on some of the natural principles discussed here. The more that individuals of the planet slowly move away from competitive money-centered practices and spend their time and energy cultivating cooperation, the more quickly we will be able to collectively walk away from a system that no longer serves us.

I’ve always been interested in the darker side of a person’s personality, particularly deviant behaviour. I want to know why someone might stray from the straight and narrow. So I often watch programmes about scam artists and their victims. And I think to myself, how did they fall for their tricks? Do they use specific tools to manipulate a person? Do they have to have particular character traits to pull off a scam? Is there a perfect victim? Well, all of the above is true. But before we examine the signs of a scam artist, let’s look at the type of person they target.
 
The Perfect Time for Scam Artists
 
Unfortunately, anyone can fall victim to a scam artist. We are all incredibly busy these days. We don’t have the time to scrutinise every email or text or phone call. Furthermore, scam artists are targeting us from every conceivable angle.
 
Decades ago, a con-artist would have to be confident and articulate. They would have to have face-to-face communication skills to convince someone to part with their cash. In fact, we get the term con-man from ‘confidence-man’. But things have changed massively.
 
These days, we talk to people who are thousands of miles away without even seeing them. Likewise, there are many different forms of communication. And that’s a major difference for our time.
 
In the past, a con-man would have to face his victim. He (or she) would see, up close and personal, the damage done as a result of their con. Now, scammers are people sat far away, in their tracksuits, targeting anonymous people who they have no emotional connection to at all.
 
As a result, anyone and everyone are under constant attack. If our wits are down our defences are wide open.
 
So who is a perfect victim for a scam artist?
 
Scam artists will look for a certain victim-type, depending on the scam they want to pull off. It is important to remember that a victim of a scam is not stupid. This is because scammers play to our emotions, not our intelligence. So, anyone who is in a vulnerable state is, particularly at risk.
 
For example, a person who has recently lost their job, a partner, a child. Someone who is going through a major life upheaval. But also positive things can make you vulnerable. For instance, a run of extremely good luck can skew your judgment.
 
Successful scams all hinge on desire over rationality. Victims of scams often don’t want to know a lot of details about the scam. They just need to know the outcome. In other words, will they be better off?

They use your name
 
Using a person’s first name is a powerful way to emotionally connect with someone. It instantly creates a bond between two people. You feel special, as if you are important to that person, particularly if it is your first meeting.
 
They mirror your body language
 
This is a classic manipulation tool that scammers use. By copying your body language, the scam artist is subconsciously forming an attachment with you. You feel attracted to them but you are not sure why.
 
‘We’re in this together’
 
‘We’re in this together.’ ‘You and I are going to be rich.’ ‘We’re gonna make a lot of money.’ Firstly, why would someone want to share their wealth with you? Particularly if you are a stranger to them?
 
Human beings tend to want to hoard their wealth so be very wary if a complete stranger wants to include you in a money-making scheme. Secondly, you’ll feel more like a team and less like you are alone in any risk-taking activity.
 
But there’s always a time limit
 
You often see unscrupulous salespeople do this in order to close a deal. There’s this fantastic offer on hand, but, you have to sign on the dotted line within an hour or the deal is gone. This tactic plays on the FOMO effect. We don’t want to miss out on a great deal. Listen, no deal is that good it doesn’t stand up to scrutiny and time spent away reflecting on it.
 
You’ll win a little at first
 
To get you to sign up to whatever scam is going, you will win a small amount of money in the short-term. This is done to build your confidence. It is also done to lock you into a situation. Now you are tied into a scheme. You are invested, literally and figuratively. You have a psychological need to continue. Of course, it won’t last.
 
Scam artists are good listeners
 
You might think that the majority of scammers are skilled in communication, but having good listening skills is equally important. The reason they listen a lot is that they need to know what will seal the deal for you and what a deal breaker is.
 
They’ll show their imperfections
 
Studies show that we trust a person that is not perfect. In the beginning, a scam artist will let you in on a little flaw of theirs that shows their imperfections. Of course, it won’t be a massive thing to put you off. I mean, they won’t confide that they are a psychopath who has just killed their mother. It will be just small enough to earn your trust.
 
Scammers start off small
 
Romance con-artists tend to ask for small amounts of money which then get bigger and bigger over time. The reasons can vary from paying off small debts to helping stop bankruptcy. Although the amounts may begin under 100 pounds or dollars, the victim can end up giving away their life-savings of over hundreds of thousands.
A scam artist will count on your embarrassment
 
Why do so many scams go unpunished or unprosecuted? Because the victim feels so embarrassed about being conned. And this is what the scammer is depending on. We often see elderly victims of scams refusing to come forward because they feel so ashamed about being scammed.
 
Final Thoughts
 
With so many scam artists out there, it is important to keep our wits about us. Probably the most important advice is that if a deal seems too good to be true, it is.

What is the psychology of money? Yes, you heard it right, there are many psychological aspects and they do influence the way we live.
 
Most people think only in the terms of, “make money/spend money/invest money/save money” or something to that effect, but the subject of the money goes much deeper than that.
 
 
In fact, there are psychological reasons why we spend, make or save money. There are also reasons for the way we secretly feel about its place in our lives.
 
How does money truly affect us?
 
Believe it or not, there are several ways that money affects us psychologically. It can even sometimes feel as if we’re slaves to it, always finding reasons to buy things and fewer reasons to save. But that’s only for some. For others saving money comes easier, and yes, it’s all psychological.
 
A few secrets of the psychology of money
 
Supernatural money
 
One of the first things that I want to get out of the way is the supernatural stigma that’s attached to money. This includes gambling, curses, and other strange ideas which mix your mindset with money. When it comes to gambling, money is seen as a reward for luck and risk alike, depending on which one you believe in.
 
Some people believe that too much money can be a curse, or the lack of money is from a curse. Some spiritual individuals see money as “the root of all evil”, but let’s face it, money is just an object in and of itself. But who am I to judge these beliefs.
Money breeds entitlement
 
Sometimes and with only some people, money causes a change in personality, for the worst, that is. When some people come into a greater financial status, their personalities change, taking on a sense of entitlement. To them, this change means a change in how they can treat others, and how others should treat them.
 
Although from this standpoint, we can see how ridiculous that is, just win the lottery and see if you feel any different. I bet most of us would look down our noses just a bit more than usual. Of course, that’s just an assumption, but a well-researched one.
Less money, more empathy
 
Although this might sound silly, those of lower-income have a better sense of how other people feel, thus more empathetic. Wealthier people, although intelligent in their own right, seem to pay less attention to those things.
 
You see, when you have plenty of money, you tend to be more occupied with purchases and savings, even investments, not people surrounding you. I’m not saying that you care, it’s just money keeps you busy in a much different way.
 
Lower-income people are concerned with making ends meet, getting bills paid, and also saving. The thing is, I’ve noticed more lower-income people giving money to others when they needed money themselves. They could feel as the others felt and understand the plight of being near the poverty level.
 
The fear of losing money is also less prevalent among the lower-income population because concerns are built on empathy. Fellow people are more important than worrying about a financial solution.
More money, judged and envied
 
On the flip side of the psychology of money, you will find many poorer people making false judgments against wealthier people. Many feel that people who have a lot of money are cold and snobby.
 
Some lower-income people even envy the wealthy and see them as being greedy because they don’t share, whether or not they actually do share or not.
 
The rich aren’t trusted and the bigger the corporation, the more “evil” they must be. Even though this is a loose assumption of what some people think, it forms the way they feel about money itself. Secretly, this sort of psychological effect of money is causing rifts between lower and higher-income groups.
 
Wealth and happiness
 
A common question: “Does being rich mean you’re happy?” Well, I have an easy answer for that. No. In fact, there seems to be a higher rate of depression and narcissism in the wealthy than in lower-income groups. Overall, however, it really doesn’t make much difference whether you’re rich or poor.
 
Happiness can be found in many places, including areas that require no money at all. Even though the psychology of money has slipped into the idea of happiness, fewer people are depending on money as their source of success. Isn’t that fascinating?
 
Financial avoidance, leading to anxiety
 
There comes a time where money becomes a problem, your spending or investment habits have become the problem. There also comes a time when important decisions need to be made involving money in some way, and there can be various situations. Here’s where psychology connects with money.
 
So many of us are stricken with procrastination or even worse, avoidance, which is a bit different where the money is concerned. We avoid financial situations we need to take care of, and the situation generally gets worse, causing anxiety. When they get worse, many people use avoidance once again, causing more anxiety.
 
The fear of facing the problem becomes tremendous. If you would face the problem, yes, the anxiety would temporarily reach extreme levels, but as you work through the mess you’ve made, anxiety gradually reduces and so does your problem.
The psychology of money can also be good
 
Although worrying about money and judging others with money are negative frames of mind, you could also strive to reach goals, as well. You could use psychological factors to work for you and not against you.
 
You must remember, each culture has a certain way of viewing money. While some see it as everything, others see little value in this sometimes “worshipped “ exchange, believe it or not. So, it depends on where you are, who you are, and, again, your psychological view of money.
 
And I’ve only scratched the surface of the psychology of this coveted possession. Money has become somewhat of a taboo subject.
 
Most people, unfortunately never dig any deeper than obtaining, saving, investing, and spending of money, as I said before. So, before you brush the topic off, think about money a bit harder, and ask yourself one question.
 
“What are the psychological effects that money has on my life?”

Brexit has caused deep divisions in households in the UK. In France, the ‘gilets jaunes’ are threatening to bring the country to a standstill over rising fuel costs. Can conflict theory help us understand why?
If you’ve noticed that the world seems to be getting a lot less tolerant these days, then conflict theory might have the answer.

What Is Conflict Theory?

Its premise is simple. Developed by Karl Marx, it suggests that society exists in a perpetual state of conflict, rather than harmony.
This is because we are all competing for the same, finite resources. In other words, for each social resource, there is a potential for conflict.
Marx stated that the wealthy in society will always protect their resources and keep them hidden away. The poor will try and obtain wealth using any means necessary.
As a result, there is a constant struggle between these two groups – the rich and the poor. Both individuals and groups within society will strive to benefit themselves over others.

Main Points of Conflict Theory:
  • Limited resources lead to competition between groups in society.
  • These groups are the rich ruling class or the poor working class.
  • The competition is usually economic or social with the ruling class dominating over the working class.
Let’s explore each of the main points in more detail.

1. Competition for resources

There are three types of resource that cause conflict:
  1. Economic resources
  2. Power resources
  3. Status resources
The most obvious resource in society is money. Wealth frees you from stress, worry, it provides you with a better life, more choices.
We all know what money can give us. Money buys you a big house. The opportunity to live in a nice area. The chance to go to a good school, to get a good education. Once you have good qualifications, you can get a better job. This perpetuates the circle of wealth.
Of course, resources don’t just include money. They are also those intangible things like time and social status. For example, a poor, working-class woman in a coercive relationship is not going to have the same opportunities as a single man with rich parents.
Therefore, it is important to understand that there are different types of struggles for resources.

2. The types of groups competing

Marx suggested two types of groups involved in the competition for resources.
  • The wealthy, the ruling class or the bourgeoisie.
  • The poor, working class or the proletariat.
The bourgeoisie account for a very small percentage of the population, but they have the power and resources. As a result, they use this power to influence and dominate the larger majority of the proletariat.
This is the pyramid theory in which a small group at the top control the power of all the other members of society below them. They achieve this in several ways. They take control of the media, they focus attention away from themselves and they will target minority groups for society’s problems.

3. Types of competition – economic and social

So the two groups are the rich and the poor and they are competing for wealth, but they are also competing on a social level too. So what does that mean?
Take the relationship between an employer and a worker. The employer can keep wages stagnating for years, cut worker’s benefits, freeze overtime and stop pay rises. All the worker has is his or her labour to sell as a commodity. They don’t own the factory or the business. They are at the whim of the owners.
Ultimately, the owners want to get the most out of their workers with it costing them the least amount. The same applies to a tenant and a landlord. Their relationship in society is unequal. The landlord wants the most they can get for the property, no matter how nice their tenants are. Therefore there will always be conflict.

Conflict in today’s world

German sociologist Max Weber expanded on Marx’s theory. He suggested that people would be affected on many more levels, which included gender, race, education, class and social mobility. He also inferred that some might not be affected at all. Others might be influenced by the very people in power over them.
For example, if a popular leader made unpopular decisions, how would the masses react? It’s possible they would react favourably. So it’s safe to say that this theory is multi-layered and dependant on many factors, not just class and wealth.

Conflict and the Gilets Jaunes

So are we any closer to explaining the polarised views of Brexit or the protests in France? Well, yes. If the interests of an opposing group become too oppressive, then the opposed group will mobilise.
They will share a sense of belonging and social membership. They’ll create boundaries between those who belong and those don’t. Some will feel so incensed that they’ll take action.
In fact, the conflict itself tends to create a sense of solidarity and pull in others who might not ordinarily join the fight. We can see this with the gilets jaunes of France.
What began as a peaceful protest against a rise in fuel tax has now morphed into something completely different. Not only that but it has grown into a much larger anti-government movement. The protesters believe that you are either with them or against them.

Conflict and Brexit

As for Brexit, the result of the UK referendum is still a huge cause for arguments in Britain. People’s emotions are highly charged. There’s a lot of black and white thinking on this subject.
Those who voted Remain believe they are right and so do those who voted Leave. Moreover, neither will listen to opposing views. With such a small difference in the result of the Leave vote (4%), you’d think people in the UK could find some common ground.
But no. We cement our own ideologies as the truth and the way forward all the while demonising our opponents. We’ve become self-righteous and feel completely justified in our actions. What we don’t realise is that we have now become as bad as our oppressors.

How to Use Conflict Theory to Resolve Disagreements

So let’s apply the theory to human relationships and problems. What we can agree on is that the most important factor is a sense of inequality. Remember the inequality can be real or imagined, it could have happened a minute ago or be centuries old.
  • Conflict is not a contest. If you go into an argument to win at all costs, you are not going to resolve the conflict.
  • Look at the problem from the other person’s perspective. This means putting yourself in their shoes.
  • Find out the root of the inequality. Is it financial, a question of time, education, insecurity?
  • Be open-minded about resolutions and solutions. Your partner or colleague might have an idea of how to resolve the conflict.
  • Listen to the other person. When people feel listened to and validated they are more likely to open up and the level of trust increases.
  • Leave emotion out. Be matter-of-fact when discussing a possible solution. Conflict increases when emotions rise.
  • Focus on the problem, not the person. It helps to take the personality out of the equation and keep your attention on the source of the conflict.
  • Don’t criticise, respect. Nothing shuts down a conversation more than criticism. However, showing respect does the opposite.
We can’t eliminate conflict from our world. But we can change the way we deal with it. This theory shows us that understanding the reasons behind conflict will help us negotiate our waythrough it more effectively.

Anchoring in psychology is a specific cognitive bias. It takes the form of individuals grabbing hold of the one piece of information they heard first, to the detriment of other information.
You might know this as ‘first impressions’ – when someone relies on their own first idea of a person or situation.

How the psychology of anchoring works

Anchoring affects the information around it. It works in such a way that information which is close to the original information is assimilated.
Those pieces of information that are not, however, is ignored or pushed away. When this happens, any decisions are made with reference to the anchor.
Psychological anchoring influences the way we assesslikelihood and probability. The anchor point is the place and information where we begin. When making decisions, people then make adjustments relative to their original anchor.

Anchoring in psychology was first explored by Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman.

They ran a series of experiments to determine how people would guess based on previous information.
One test involved a roulette wheel that had been preset to only stop at two numbers – ten and sixty-five. People were asked to spin the wheel and then estimate how many African countries had entered into the UN.
The two researchers found that the level of countries estimate varied with the numbers of the roulette table.
A similar study was conducted by Dan Ariely, using people’s numbers. He had people write the last two digits of their number out and then asked them if they would buy certain items for that amount of money.
The catch was that the people involved in the experiment were not told the value of the items that they were buying. Ariely found that people who had a higher two digit number made higher bids for the items at hand.
Those who had a lower number had lower bids. The psychology of anchoring made the people choose the numbers they had, even though they affected nothing.

Can you avoid anchoring?

Unfortunately, it would appear not. The psychology of anchoring inevitably affects us when we make decisions. Even studies that have gone out of their way to give people bad information (i.e. untrue anchor facts) showed this.
One particular study asked people, separately, when they thought Gandhi had died. They were given the choice of either before and after nine or before and after one hundred and forty. Both of these numbers are wrong, of course, but people still acted as though the numbers (anchors) were correct.

How anchoring biases affect your decision making

Money

Buying

Imagine, if you will, that you are in the market for a new car. Through visits to various car sites online, you can see that the average price for the car you want is nearly thirty thousand pounds. When you go to a car lot to actually buy the car, the lot is offering it for five hundred pounds less than the price you saw.
The psychology of anchoring will almost inevitably lead you to buy the car at that price due to the five hundred pound difference, even if further searching would give you a car at a still lower price.

Salary negotiations

We’ve all heard the stories about women finding it harder to negotiate salaries than men. The psychology of anchoring, unfortunately, can also affect salary negotiations negatively.
Many people will find themselves hesitating to even start the process, much less make a large demand. Recently, research has begun to show that specific actions mean that people have the best chance of successfully negotiating their own salaries.
These actions include making your own demand first, instead of allowing others to begin negotiations. When you make a demand first, it becomes your focus point.
Psychological anchoring will make sure that this first offer will become the one that you fix on as reasonable. It will form the basis of your later demands, so make it a good salary!

It influences much more than money

The psychology of anchoring affects much more than simply financial decisions. It can affect the daily lives of both ourselves and the people around us.

Dating

When do you allow your kids to date? The standards are changing all the time, but anchoring will probably make you follow the standards which were deemed appropriate when you were growing up.
This can mean that you actively prevent your children from dating until they reach the age you had to be.

Longevity

Many people calculate the age they will live to courtesy of their parents. This can have detrimental effects because it ignores other information in favour of just one idea. You might focus on the ages of your parents, without regard to their lifestyle, eating habits, and other factors.

Life isn’t always fair, and debt problems remind us of this fact. Debt is controlling, so make wise decisions to avoid this.

I’ve been in debt, oh yes, but I am thankful that it was a problem I fixed as soon as possible. However, I have seen other people’s debt spiral out of control at a fast rate. Debt problems for them were more like tsunamis, hitting hard and leaving few surviving options.
I watched them go down, and it took quite a long while for them to swim back to the surface. It was heartbreaking not being able to help like I wanted, in fear that debt would attack me again as well. Debt is contagious and can be used as a form of control like this.

How we are tricked into living with debt problems

Debt and the problems which come with it are manipulative. It’s society’s way of holding sway over consumers in order for more money to circulate.
I learned a bit about this in economics class during college. I was taught that if money didn’t circulate, the economy would fail. Yes, money has to circulate, and yes, we must purchase things for this to happen. And I am sure most of you understand this.
But, do we really have to get so out of control in this area? There are so many ways that debt becomes a problem. It becomes a manipulative beast. Let’s examine a few ways it works:

Consumerism can be devastating

While the world of economics thrives off consumer purchases, us, as consumers sometimes suffer greatly from them. As products are introduced, we desire them.
As others are getting these products, we grow envious. Sometimes, we understand that we cannot afford these products, but we find a way to attain them anyway.
Most of the time, we use small loans to acquire what we want. It can have good results or bad ones, all depending on how we use these financial tools. Yes, this type of spending also keeps money flowing through the system, but how does it affect national debt?

National consumerism

Yes, debt is seen on a grander scale. Debt as a national problem can affect, not only us as an individual, but also the world.
As we produce products to improve sales in fast food restaurants, for instance, we are putting a great strain on the production of livestock and farms. In other countries, which do not thrive on fast food industries, which means poorer countries, livestock and farms are used in more logical rates.
So, how does consumerism contribute to debt? When we want something, whether it’s individually or as a group, again, this brings us back to credit cards and loans. We often pay with money we do not have in order to purchase some things we don’t need or that we waste.

Paying the minimum trap

You now understand that debt is a major problemCredit card debt is one of the worst kinds of traps for the consumer when misused. While credit cards can be beneficial, they can also be a seed that exacerbates one of the greatest debt issues. Here’s why.
Do you want something you cannot afford? Well, some people decide to wait until they have enough money to attain this product or service. Others, however, use credit cards to attain the product now.
This is how credit cards work. We purchase products and we pay at a later date. But of course, most of you already know the benefits of using credit. How credit cards fail is when payments aren’t made and late fees accrue, creditors turn to the Minimum payment trap.
While paying the interest gives you more time, it adds to your credit card debt. Some consumers have been stuck with this sort of debt for most of their lives.
Minimum payments help you temporarily get out of paying a huge payment on your past purchase, but it also pushes other fees into future regular payments. These fees grow until your debts are out of control.
Obviously, credit card debt is easy to understand, but it’s not easy to eliminate when the debt has gotten out of control. But will we stop making these unwise decisions?

Taking the loan route instead

While loans aren’t exactly like credit cards, they can bring about debt and problems in a similar manner. The worst action you can take with loans is by taking another loan to pay the first one.
As interest grows, loans for loans tend to make it almost impossible to pay what’s owed unless a great deal of money is shelled out to remedy the accruing debt. And some loans are necessary, like buying a home or car. This is much different than using loans for personal reasons like getting things immediately instead of waiting to afford them.

The real pain and the devastating consequences

One of the scariest things for me to consider as a consumer is the long-term effects with my own personal debt. Loans, such as education loans can also be debilitating and extremely controlling.
Did you know that a loan of $40,000 or more can seek payments for the rest of your life? It’s true. This is the predicament my own son is in now. This debt also affects me as a parent as well.
Education loans have become ridiculous and there are few ways to escape the debts they develop. A few options are available, but few remove the responsibility entirely.

You can win the manipulative game

As for loans, as I stated before, there are few benefits, especially if you are never paying a large amount of principle, and interest is eating up your payments. All loans aren’t manipulative, but they can still cause problems like this.
When taking out a loan for a home, you start to build equity, this is true. Over time, the value of your home becomes greater than the remainder of your mortgage, and you may be tempted to take out a loan – do not do this. Taking out a home equity loan may be a bit different than personal loans, but it can still trap you in debt.

Let’s do our part to reduce debt

Debt related problems have become national. We just can’t keep purchasing products, services and the like without severe repercussions. As we go into debt to resolve a debt, it becomes a never-ending cycle of destruction.
The sad part is there are more than a few options for society to control national debt, this control creates debt which lasts a lifetime.
The good news is, we can start individually. We can waste less, buy less unneeded productswhile still keeping the economic wheel turning. We don’t have to be underneath the thumb of society and it’s pressure.
All we need to do is take a look at other countries, countries which, in their simplicity, have learned to use products and services to fulfill a need and not so many wants in life.
Debt problems, yes we have them. However, if we can learn to avoid the manipulation and control of society, we can learn to reduce this debt over time.
Are you up to it? Are you ready to make a change? Yes, be wise, invest in improving your home and other possessions, but be wise to the tricks society uses. There are good and bad choices. We should be able to tell the difference now.
