What Plato’s Philosophy of Education Can Teach Us Today.

Plato’s philosophy of education is a fascinating idea and one that Plato wanted to be implemented into Ancient Athenian society.
Scholars still study and discuss it today, but what’s interesting is how Plato’s theory of education has influenced many beliefs and principles that modern society holds. It is a model of education and culture that we have taken heed of in many ways, and that we can still learn much from today.
Yet, before we explore all this, it is useful to look at exactly what this theory is, and the structure of education in a society that Plato proposed.

What is Plato’s philosophy of education?

The philosophy of education according to Plato is a vast and detailed model of schooling for ancient Athens. It has many facets and aspects that could be discussed endlessly by scholars.
However, it has one simple goal, an idea that is congruent with Plato’s philosophy as a whole: for individuals and society to achieve the good, to reach a state of fulfilment or eudaimonia.
Plato believed we need education to learn how to live well. We should not just learn things like mathematics and science, but also how to be brave, rational and temperate. Individuals will then be able to live a fulfilled life and be better prepared for it. Furthermore, producing fulfilled and educated people would benefit society greatly.
He wanted to produce the best possible leaders so that society can flourish, and itself be geared towards the good. He proposed this through training individuals to become what he calls ‘guardians’ – individuals best suited to govern society (more commonly known as ‘philosopher kings’).
So, Plato wants individual fulfilment and improvement of society through his model of education. Both are a means of working toward a state of eudaimonia. But how does he propose to achieve this?
A good starting point is to recognise that Plato’s ideas are influenced in part by Sparta’s education system. It was state-controlled and Plato wanted Athens’ system to be state-controlled as well. Sparta was a society that focused its efforts to produce warriors to serve the state through rigorous physical education.
Plato admired this model but believed it was lacking literacy. He wanted to engage both the body and the mind through education.

The curriculum

A curriculum is suggested for this theory of education. This curriculum starts with very small children and can extend up until the age of 50 for some individuals. It is separated into two different sections: Elementary education and Higher education.

Elementary education lasts up until the age of 20. Firstly, children should predominately have physical education. This should be the case up until the age of about 10 and is to ensure children are at peak bodily health for fitness and also to better fight illness and disease.
Then children should be introduced to art, literature and music, as Plato believed that these subjects would cultivate their character.
Art would act as a means to teach morality and virtue. More practical subjects were taught at the same time as this to give a balance of subject matter. These include mathematics, history and science for example.
Elementary education is an important time for a person’s development. This education should not be forced as this could restrict and mould a person a certain way that does not represent their character.
Children should be left so that their natural skills, qualities and interests can flourish without influence. This can give an indication of what occupation they would be best suited to in the future, and what sort of character they may become.

Higher Education

The next stage in the curriculum is higher education. An individual must take an examination at about the age of 20 to decide whether or not they should seek higher education.
One would then learn more advanced subjects like astronomy and geometry for the next 10 years until another test is taken. This will determine whether or not to progress into further learning, similar to the first test.
People still in education would constantly be learning new and more advanced subjects and are tested along the way. Those who fail to meet the standards at each test must drop out. This carries on until the age of about 50.
You are deemed successful, competent and measured enough take upon the most important task if you reach this stage. These people are allocated as the ‘guardians’ of the state. They are best suited to govern and uphold a just and moral society. They are the ‘philosopher kings’.
This curriculum shows Plato’s theory on how we should be educated in the right way in order to bring about the good in society.
Those who drop out at a certain stage will find other trades, jobs or crafts that best suit their skills. But they will still have attained an education that will help them to bring about a positive impact on society, and to help them reach a state of fulfilment.
Those who are guardians should strive to implement these ideas on a much larger scale for the good of the state.
Plato did put his philosophy of education into practice by setting up his own school: The Academy.

The Academy

The ancient Greek philosopher set up what is said to be the first ever institute of higher education. It was similar to what we would now recognise as a university. The Academy was an educational establishment set up by Plato to try and implement his vision of education in society.
Its purpose was to teach us how to live well, and to produce rulers for society. Nowadays it is seen depicted in art and often seen as a symbol for classical philosophy.

However, it was fundamentally a school organised to teach Plato’s philosophy. People would be taught all manner of subjects and be filtered out to find the most competent and worthy of managing a just and virtuous city-state.
We have now explored what Plato’s ideas were and how they were practically implemented in society. But what does it all mean? Why did Plato urge for education to be this way?

The theory explained

Plato’s philosophy of education strives to achieve all that Plato is concerned with: a functioning just state and eudaimonia. He believes education should be structured in a way so that it provides people and society the positive measures needed to flourish.
People will be better equipped to reach a state of fulfilment, and society will be better equipped to be the ideal, just state. Plato’s philosophy of education promotes and works towards the common and final good for everybody.
Some people will not make it through every stage of this structure of education, but this doesn’t matter. If someone does not make it past a certain stage, then it is an indication that they are best suited in a certain role in society. They can now direct their skills and efforts to fulfil this role and ultimately work towards a fulfilled life.
Those who become guardians of the state after progressing through each stage of education are effectively philosophers. They will be the wisest in society, the most rational and the most temperate.
Plato wanted to rid society of the current political leaders and replace them with those best suited to govern a just state, whilst being concerned for the common good for everyone. Only philosophers can do this in Plato’s eyes.

Why is Plato’s philosophy of education relevant to modern society?

Plato’s ideas are relevant today because of his vision of an education that is inclusive of everyone, and its importance in creating a just and moral state. These are ideas that have recognisably influenced our society today, and there is much we can still learn from them as well.
The system of education is based on everyone having access to the same education. Its very basis is the equality of individuals.
It allows people to naturally flourish whilst also guiding them into a life that will produce a positive impact on society and hopefully guiding them to reach a state of fulfilment. It suggests everyone has liberty – this aspect arguably laid the groundwork for modern democracy.
Perhaps what we can learn more than anything from Plato’s philosophy of education is the overall intention of it; ensuring that society functions well in a just and moral way and that people live well and achieve the good life.
It is the duty of educators to implement this and to have profound care and concern for a learner’s wellbeing, and not just the knowledge they wish to instil.
It is also the guardians’ purpose to have profound care and concern for everyone in society. All of this is a guidance for people to reach a state of fulfilment, Plato’s ultimate goal.

Modern education and Plato’s philosophy

I don’t expect our political leaders to be replaced with trained philosophers and become the rulers of society any time soon, but the premise behind these ideas are important.
Modern education does a good job of preparing us for work and to be self-sustaining in the world. But we are ill prepared to face many inevitable difficulties in life. This causes us much struggle and suffering, often without much guidance as to how to deal with it. We all yearn for this guidance in dark times.
Education should be this guidance. We should learn how to live well and how to deal with suffering so we are prepared for much more than just work, so we can too become fulfilled individuals. Plato’s philosophy of education is a call for this, and we should listen to him.

I have two strange passions: I love words (hence my love for writing) and I love learning about different life philosophies. When browsing the bookstore a few months back, I saw a book titled “Ikigai: how the Japanese wake up to joy and purpose every day.” A perfect match for someone like me — ikigai was both a word and new “life philosophy” I’d never heard before. Of course, it caught my attention.
 
We’re told that attaining certain external things such as a good degree and a bottomless bank account is the path to true success. Our innate search for happiness leads us to strive endlessly for that degree, that relationship, that outside recognition and validation.

Because I’m what you might call a “free spirit” as opposed to a “follow the beaten path” kind of girl, living in a society that pushes a certain life direction—multiple degrees, big jobs, etc—has left me feeling like my life isn’t much of a contribution. I would much rather learn and master the concepts of inner peace, authentic connection, self-acceptance, fear.
This conflict of not living according to the world’s standards robbed me of my own inner peace, even though in my heart of hearts, I knew I was meant for a different path. I felt the discomfort of not fitting the mold; I felt out of harmony because I so badly wanted to conform to a world that was beating to a different rhythm from my own heart.

So what does this have to do with ikigai?

The word itself means “reason for being.” Each and every one of us finds fulfillment and joy in different ways. Part of the magic and beauty of life is finding what sparks joy in your life. There are four pillars that you must address in order to embody ikigai:
  1. Find something that you love (for example, what makes time fly by for you?)
  2. Have some meaningful contribution to the world (do you feel your work has a meaningful impact on others?)
  3. Do something that you can get paid for (this is self-explanatory. Everyone needs food on the table!)
  4. Find something you’re good at (it doesn’t have to be an inherent gift you have, but something you’re able and willing to work towards excelling in.)
We readily take out loans and get into school debt because we think having a certain degree will give us job security. Yet, we rarely follow our intuition with the same confidence and faith. When you think of it that way, pursuing what really sets you on fire doesn’t seem as “impractical.”
The question is, are you willing to try new things, take risks, and get outside your comfort zone? Regardless of where you’re at in life, living out a life that both challenges you to reach higher while unleashing the greatness you already have within is the only real way to feel true joy from the inside out. Are you ready to embrace the joy you’re made for and discover the best version of you?

Below are 7 tips to embody ikigai and live a life of joy, fulfillment, balance, and radiance.

 

Step One: Apply self-awareness.

Take a little inventory of your thoughts regarding every facet of your life. Your ambitions, relationships, skills. The only way to make changes is to first become aware of what needs to be changed. In addition, take note of the things that are working for you.
Is there anything that feels particularly mundane about your life? What do you find yourself thinking about most? What’s a “dream” or “wish” you have, that you may not be taking seriously? And what do you truly enjoy?

Step Two: Be intentional.

Intentionality is key to finding fulfillment and balance. Without being intentional with your energy and where you put your focus, you will easily become drained, bored, or off track from your goals altogether.
Getting into a routine and checking in with yourself regularly is a really helpful way of staying in alignment. After all, your “reason for being” must come from living authentically.

Step Three: Stay in your own lane.

It can be easy to look to others for validation or to compare yourself, but at the end of the day, only you know if you are living from a place of authentic purpose.
External distractions can take you away from the little nudges that are trying to speak to you. Tune in to when you feel your best. Inner peace is an arrow. Follow what brings you that settling feeling within.

Step Four: Acknowledge your strengths.

Everyone has unique strengths and talents. It can be easy to take these gifts for granted—ANYONE who can read a map is a magician in my eyes!—but this hinders your innate potential. Sad face! If you’re feeling unsure of what your gifts are, ask some trusted friends or family. But if you can, try and come up with your strengths on your own.
It’s important to acknowledge your abilities and cultivate them. Remember: there are many different types of gifts and talents. It could be your creativity or your drive to make a difference. Maybe you’re good at organization or you love art. Acknowledge your strengths and use them as leverage to building your ikigai.

Step Five: Change your routine.

I’m all for routines. I love my morning and evening routine. They ground me and give my day structure. However, one of the best ways to reset is to do something out of the ordinary. It can be as small as changing your coffee order or taking a day trip to a nearby park.
Changing up your routine can invite new energy and ideas and foster “a-ha” moments. It also makes life more interesting. Don’t let your life become mundane!

Step Six: Challenge yourself. Show up.

You know that bubble of “protection” we call our comfort zone? Yup, it’s time to expand that. It’s time to show up for life more fully. Your comfort zone is like a little hiding place. Challenge yourself to break out of that shell a little. It doesn’t have to be big.
It could be reaching out to an old friend or trying a cooking class. Maybe it’s asking for a raise at work or saying no to something that’s adding stress to your life. Challenging yourself not only builds resilience and self-confidence but also draws out more of your potential. Don’t worry about the outcome, celebrate the effort!

Step Seven: Recalibrate.

What worked for you last year—or even last month— may not be working in your best interest now. Stay tuned to your growth. This is part of living with intentionality and awareness. Maybe you need to go to bed earlier or wake up earlier. Maybe you need more time alone. Recalibrate.
And lastly, here’s a bonus tip: BREATHE. You don’t need to have it all figured out at once. Plans may change or fall through, but these are often little blessings in disguise leading you in a better direction, even if it’s hard to see or believe in the moment. Follow the inklings in your heart. Dare to challenge your doubts. You are capable of so much more than you know.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want life to pass me by. After all, the more I can embody ikigai, the more love and joy I can give to others. So what about you? How do you want to live out your ikigai?

9 Signs of a Truly Independent Person: Are You One?

Being an independent person doesn’t come from living an easy life. The trials of life make you stronger.

I get angry sometimes when things go wrong. I sometimes lose hope when past hardships repeat themselves over and over. But I think this happens because there is yet something we’re meant to learn. I also think these trials can make prosperous. This means, no matter how hard it gets, I know I can be an independent person.

How strong and independent are you?

Being an independent and strong person comes with a price sometimes. We build walls when experiencing hurt after hurt. The callouses that form over pain and abuse can also leave us a bit insensitive to the feelings of others.
However, that’s not how we all work, or how we should strive to be. Some of us become independent without losing the ability to open up. That’s the focus of our strength.

Anyway, here are signs that you could be an independent type of person. Or maybe someone you know has these traits.

1. You can live alone

Being independent means you can live alone. You don’t need the help of others to survive, and you always find a way to stay financially stable.
You also have no need for occupying the same spaces with other people, unless of course, you want to. You’re so good with yourself that living alone is actually preferable at times.

2. You’re a future planner

While many people say “live in the moment”, an independent and solid person will always plan for times to come. They see the big picture and not the temporary high of present fun and companionship.
I will say it’s good to enjoy each day, but it’s also important to save for the future. Independent people are perfectionists at planning for the future.

3. Saying ‘no’ isn’t hard

For some, saying no is difficult, especially if they are afraid of hurting the people close to them. For dependent people, saying yes, and going along with things is easier than mustering the strength to decline.
People of an independent nature can easily say no and not even give an explanation for their answer. They are bold and present an attitude that says, “I’m saying no just because I want to.”. Do you see?

4. It’s hard to ask for help

Asking for help isn’t hard for some, but for independent and stubborn people, they hate charity. To independent individuals, asking for help means weakness.
Being weak cannot be a part of their plans, for present or for the future. To them, it may even be a sign that they cannot make it on their own if they ask for help.

5. You have few friends

When you’re independent, you have fewer friends than most people. Truth be told, this is because you spend time with people expecting nothing in return.
Now, I don’t know how true this is for everybody, but many of those with many friends often expect favors and help. Since you’re independent, you only see friends as companions. Choosing your friends in this manner helps you realize who you truly appreciate and love.

6. You have an unshakable self-worth

When you’ve become an independent person, you won’t have to get validation from other people. No matter how many insults they use, you will still know who you really are. You will see your value, your beauty, and your loyalty, and nothing can change this.
Of course, there may be times when you’re shaken momentarily, but you bounce back. This helps you see the one who insults you for who they really are. You will know this independent individual by their resilience in the face of adversity.

7. You go out alone

Most of the time, you will go out alone. You love to shop for things alone because you can go and leave as you please. You even like to eat at restaurants alone sometimes.
Being alone in public feels good to you, and it doesn’t leave you empty. You don’t have to socialize with friends out on the town, but you can still have a conversation with people who are already there. It’s an interesting trait.

8. You can lead

When independent, you can take the lead and get difficult things done. You will notice both men and women taking charge of difficult situations, and this usually means they are pretty independent of others.
Sometimes men are intimidated by women who take charge, but unfortunately, this is because they are usually the dependent sort. Strong men aren’t intimidated, they rather help strong women succeed. This can be seen the other way around too but in a slightly different aspect.

9. You’re financially independent

Yes, we already know the independent sort are people who live alone, and they are also those who refuse help. Well, if, for some reason, an independent person just happens to owe money, say for car payments or other financed things, they will most certainly be on time and try to pay off the debt as soon as possible.
They hate owing people anything. It feels like independence is being taken away when you have to borrow money against something.

Being truly independent

There’s a reason people act the way they do. Some are born independent while others grow into these strong individuals because of past trauma or life-long hardship. They’ve learnedtheir own value and potential. An independent person is one of the most exemplary types of human beings to ever exist, and I attain to become more like this as I grow.
Are you an independent one? Do you strive to become more independent? If so, you must take heed if you wish to become more independent that you don’t lose your ability to feel emotions.
If you’re not careful, you can build walls while building your confidence and strength. Here again, as with many other aspects of life, I think balance is the key. So, go forth and conquer.

Eastern philosophy does not differ from other philosophic teachings in its overall objective. This is to teach us to be wiser individuals and to ultimately provide guidance as to how to live well.
Therefore, Eastern philosophy is no different from Western philosophy is this sense. The distinction lies in how it suggests we can achieve these goals.
You may study the likes of PlatoAristotle, Descartes, Hume or Nietzsche to name a few across various academic disciplines. The teachings of such abide by the central doctrine of western philosophy. It’s about using reason and logic as a means to analyse, understand and think more deeply about our lives. But it can be useful to gain a different perspective to find the answers and guidance in life that we quietly yearn for.
Eastern philosophy places focus on the individual or the self and the individual’s role in society. It explores how to reach inner peace and our relationship with nature and the wider cosmos.
There are many branches of eastern philosophy. But as a whole, it asserts and presents general and useful ideas to us about how to live a good life on the basis of these themes.
These simple ideas have the potential to enlighten and enrich us when we grapple with some of the biggest questions in life that so often seem so elusive.

Here are 7 life lessons learned from eastern philosophy that are still relevant and useful to us today:

Life is full of pain and suffering

This Buddhist sentiment can seem incredibly bleak and dismal and you would only be sane if you were to have this reaction on first being told this. Yet, after a time, such a thought can begin to seem strangely paradoxically comforting to us.
Our lives are full of constant and reoccurring pain, worry and anxiety whether we wish to admit it or not. We may attempt to push away or forget about this fact by seeking happiness in material things. This is especially common in a modern, commercialised media-driven age.
However, not recognising and failing to face up to this fact can inadvertently heighten our sufferings. As a result, we become increasingly unequipped to deal with them.
The sooner we begin to realise this fact, the sooner we will be more prepared to deal with and understand the reality we have. Begin to comprehend the suffering that you are facing currently and the suffering you will inevitably face and you will become more content with your life.
This will allow you to truly appreciate the periods and moments of joy. It will also bring you important comfort in an all too difficult and arduous life. Finally, you will feel the contentment we all deeply ache to achieve.

Be humane

Confucianism teaches the importance to be humane to one another. We are all enduring the same existence. Everyone else has probably had their heart broken, been grief-stricken or been betrayed at some point down the line. We should be conscious of this fact.
Showing compassion to one another will enable us to partially alleviate the pain of our fellow human beings. This can also help us to maintain a moral character. Often, this doesn’t have to be more than a passing comment to both those we love and those we feel inclined to despise.
Confucius ultimately believed that being humane to one another is crucial for individual morality but also for an ethical society. The thought is that if individuals are ethical to one another, then this will provide a foundation for a moral society.

When things don’t go our way in life, we can frustratingly try to make things happen. We may also try to stop things from happening. Our attempts to try and force this could prove futile and create unnecessary harm in the process. Rather than trying to change or prevent inevitabilities, sometimes it is better to just ride the wave.
These ideas are prominent in Taoism and places emphasis on essentially letting nature run its course. The ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu believed in the importance of being in harmony with nature and the universe. This is an important trope of eastern philosophy.
We should accept our place in the cosmos and stop resisting the inevitable forces that come our way. Only then can we hope to reach a state of calm.
True fulfilment comes with accepting what is natural and inevitable. So just let things happen.

Life is a state of continuous change

Our lives are always changing in many different ways. We become older, we lose friends and family, we may be offered a job, we may lose a job, our relationships will end and new ones will begin.
Knowing that the past is unalterable and being aware that our lives will head off into differing directions can cause us distress.  We may regret our past actions or lament opportunities that we didn’t capitalise on.
Rather than despairing on these matters, we should perhaps gain a different perspective on them. Yes, our lives will scarily and quickly change and moments will pass. But this means our suffering and pain is also impermanent.
Just as the trees around us grow, the plants die and landscapes change, our lives are also constantly altering. We will still bemoan the good that is now in the past. But this change can mark the passing of dark times in our lives allowing us the space to rebuild and prepare for a more prosperous future.

The self is a state of continuous change

It is useful to realise that ‘the self’ is always altering just like life always is. We are often pressured to believe that we must ‘discover who we are’ or have other similar idioms inflicted on us in modern society. But facets of our individual selves can constantly change.
Our dream job can be something of continual development and discovery. The vision of our ideal partner can be subject to frequent amendments. Finally, our political convictions may change over time.
Sticking rigidly to self-imposed or socially imposed constraints can cause us frustration and distress. This happens when we know they will not ultimately provide us with the fulfilment we crave.
Don’t be afraid to embrace your changing ideas, convictions or beliefs. It is a sign that your individual self is constantly developing. It should be exciting to explore such changes and should provide you with the freedom to find true fulfilment in what you choose to do.

Always move forward

Confucius reminds us of the importance of ensuring that we are always moving forward. If you are dealing with a setback in your life or if you are struggling to achieve a goal, it is important to keep on moving in the right direction, however small the steps may be.
Perhaps you have been rejected for several jobs, feel unsatisfied with your personal life or feel stagnated as a result of a job that you are in. It is important not to feel as if you are retreating away from what you think will ultimately fulfil you.
If you appear to reach an impasse then actively change something about your life, however minimal or drastic. Sometimes making a change is what is necessary for your own well being; to ensure you are moving in the right direction towards fulfilment – whatever this may entail.

Gain strength from your suffering

As the Buddha said, and as we have already discussed about eastern philosophy, life is full of pain and suffering. There may be several moments in our existence when we may feel as if we are coming apart at the seams.
It is one of the most important facts about our lives that we should be aware of. But being aware of this fact is only part of the way we should deal with it.
We should not try to forget, disguise or quell our sufferings or failings. Instead, we should recognise, accept and learn from them. As a result, we will be better prepared in the future to rebuild our lives if we need to when they become inexplicably broken or damaged.
We are all deeply lonely and fractured beings. We are all struggling in some way or another, but we can all be healed and repaired. It is important not to fall into bitterness or angerabout what has happened to us or neglect the reality of our difficulties. This will only leave our wounds open and intensify the suffering we feel.
If you are resentful over a painful event or a betrayal then you will, of course, for a time, be in despair. Yet, despite our anger as a result of these events, or our deeply held convictions to those who have wronged us, we should accept, learn from the experience and learn to forgivehowever hard it may be.
Perhaps then we will be able to stitch our lives back up with stronger seams than before.

Why is eastern philosophy relevant to us?

Eastern philosophy is relevant to us because it speaks of the fundamental truths in our lives that we would perhaps struggle to conceive of or even want to avoid. Yet, it can gently remind us and teach us of these facets of our existence in a reassuring and comforting way.
The issues that troubled eastern philosophers and the people of their time were very much the same issues that we are grappling with now. We are all suffering the same, facing the same frustrations and are all faced with difficult decisions.
Eastern philosophy helps to calmly and serenely ease our anxieties to help us get through these things through soothing imagery, poetic words and encouraging us to simply let ourselves run our course with nature.
It is an attractive alternative to western philosophy if we ever pine for a little bit of calm amongst the chaos of our lives.

Getting to know the authentic self that is hiding deep inside you is the first step on the long path of liberation.
Just think about it, if you dare. Your true self is hidden deep within you, covered by layers upon layers of opinions, expectations, and excuses. You are not what you think you are or what you’re expecting of yourself or how you excuse your behavior in front of yourself and others.
The sooner you let go of this well-practiced character you play, the sooner you’ll reach your authentic self. This is the person you’ll feel at home with, however flawed or afraid they might be. This is the person you’ll be able not to change, but to shape, mold, hone and improve.
Everything else would be a lie, and lies are heavy. Lies weigh you down like chains.

But how do you reach this person you’ve ghosted for so long?

Venturing inward is the best chance you have. Instead of keeping everything on the surface, dive deeper underneath. Introspection will help you break the ice and adjust your eyes to the dark. But make no mistake, you’ll need to go pass beyond what feels comfortable and safe.
You’ll need to start reflecting upon what you’re seeing there.
Self-reflection is looking the truth in the eyes and living to tell. It’s also a learning experience that allows you to discover who you are and what you want.
Self-reflection always leads to insight, thus contributing always new and accurate details to your once distorted self-image.

Getting to know your authentic self starts with these five open-ended questions:

1. What Are Five Non-Negotiable Values in My Life?

 
Being flexible and willing to compromise is a fine quality in a person, but even the best of us must draw a line somewhere. The things you are not ready to negotiate on are your non-negotiable values. They are your very essence, the foundations, and principles of your true being.
Do you know what they are?
Figuring out what matters the most to you will keep you on course through thick and thin. Not only in terms of moral fiber and integrity, no. Even more importantly, these non-negotiable values will help you stay empowered and in control of everything you need to reach your goal.
At the same time, they will help you discover your priorities in life.
So ask yourself this:
  • What about your life fills you with pure love and joy?
  • What are some of the qualities you admire the most?
Maybe you’ll say health, self-expression, and authority, or honesty, friendship, and family. To a lot of people, love, empathy, and faith are non-negotiable. For me, that’s creativity, beauty, and love. For you, it may be something very different, like success, diligence, and ambition.
There are no wrong answers here.

2. What Would I Do If I Couldn’t Fail?

 
The fear of failure masks our greatest desires.
Fear stands between you and your authentic self too, keeping you comfortably tucked in a bed of lies. This is your Netflix & Chill persona telling you that you are too fat to get up and start pursuing beauty. You can try, it whispers in your ear, but you’ll only end up embarrassing yourself.
This is your corporate self, telling you that you’d never succeed as an artist. Or your stay-at-home-mom fear, preventing you from seeking a career.
Terrified of failing, we often decide not to even try. This is why so many of us end up miserable in our private and professional relationships. Instead of seeking what we truly want at the cost of failure, we choose to settle for less. It’s so much safer there, where you cannot fail.
But what would you do if you were guaranteed success?
Whatever your instinct is screaming right now is what you really want from this life.
So what if you fail? You’ll not be the first nor last to lose hope and regain new strength. If you think about it, you have absolutely nothing to lose. Bruises will only make you wiser and closer to who you are. You’ll understand that success is not in succeeding, but in overcoming fear.

3. What Are the Experiences I Want to Have to Live My Dream Life?

Of course, life isn’t solely about collecting those crowning gems.
Though staying focused on your quest is admirable, you must take some time to recharge your batteries and recuperate your energy. This will help you appreciate your achievements more, which will, in turn, keep you energized and motivated enough to reach the end goal.
Do you know what else you must do from time to time? Self-reflect on the things you’ve done and the person you’ve become.
This is why what happens on sidequests may be even more important than all the obstacles you overcome while your eyes are fixed on the prize.
These are the experiences you go through alone or share with the people you love, only seemingly uneventful and unmeaningful. Like visiting Louvre or climbing the Mount Everest.
Your bucket list must be full of these and similar forgotten gems. Find some time to collect these too. They will keep you grounded and in touch with who you are even after you become a big shot with no time for life’s simple pleasures. Cherish them as priceless things they are.

4. What Is on My Schedule That Doesn’t Need to Be There?

 
Have you figured out who is your biggest enemy in life? No, it’s not fear. It’s time.
Whether or not you’ll fear the inevitable depends on you alone. This paralyzing, irrational emotion can be overcome with a shred of will, but time can never be stopped. The best you can do about it is not to be wasteful. Commit your time to two things – mindfulness and growth.
Mindfulness feels like breaking the clock, as it allows you to freeze the moment and savor every last bit of it. Growth on the hand is the closest thing we have to a time-defying spell. The more you grow, the longer you’re remembered. Grand people are immortal, like long-dead stars.
So think about what you’re doing with your time. Is it carefully managed in a way that nurtures your non-negotiable values?
Are there things on your schedule that you can abandon or cut back? Have you made promises for a couple of months from now that you will regret then? Are you giving away your precious time on toxic people? Be grateful for the time you’ve been given. Don’t throw it away.

5. What Am I Doing That I Don’t Enjoy, and What Am I Doing That I Love?

 
In discovering who you are and what you want, perhaps the most telling signs are the things you’re doing on a daily basis. The things you enjoy, you should keep. The things you hate, not so much. Day by day, they are taking you one step further from who you truly are.
Of course, not all good things are enjoyable. You cannot throw around self-reflection as an excuse for being a selfish partner of a bad friend. If you hate going to work, you shouldn’t quit just because.
Life is a fickle thing and you must discover the balance between your authentic self and a sufficient version of you.
If you look deep down and see that you’re afraid, look again. That’s your crooked self-beliefthat’s distorting your true image.
But to return to your last question on the path to self-discovery, use self-reflection to see what you love and enjoy the most. Let these things be something worth sacrificing for, an intrinsic motivation behind doing the necessary things you don’t enjoy very much.

Final Thought

Never give up on your authentic self in return for love and success.
An actor can only play a role for that long before losing all sense of who he is. Make honesty your non-negotiable value, live with no fear of your hidden flaws, embrace the experiences that make you vulnerable and exposed, and spend more time reflecting upon your choices.
But most importantly, do everything for a chance to do what you love.

Existential intelligence is the ability to think philosophically and use your intuition. The following signs indicate that yours might be above average.
If you have high existential intelligence, you probably don’t spend much time thinking about shopping or celebrities. Instead, you think about the big questions of life – a lot!
Many people are happy getting on with their lives without thinking very deeply about the big questions of life. A lot of people are content to spend all their time talking about what’s on TV or discuss shopping or celebrity gossip.
These people rarely think about questions such as why we are here, what the purpose of life might be or what happens after we die. There is not necessarily anything wrong with this, but some people find this isn’t enough to satisfy them.

What Is Existential Intelligence?

While lots of people avoid talking about the nature of existence, life and death, and religion and spirituality, those with high existential intelligence love talking about these subjects.
Howard Gardner, who developed the Theory of Multiple Intelligences, gave the label existential intelligence to people who think philosophically. According to Gardener, existential intelligence involves being able to use collective values and intuition to understand others and the world around them.
In addition, while many people spend a lot of time thinking about the details of life, those with existential intelligence prefer to spend a lot of their time thinking about the bigger picture.
Philosophers, theologians, life coaches and those who work in psychology or spirituality are among those that often show high existential intelligence.
If you are this kind of person, you probably know it. However, you might not understand all that it means to be this kind of thinker. In case you are not sure, here are a few signs that you have above average existential intelligence:

  1. You spend hours lost in thought, contemplating various aspects of human existence.
  2. When asked a question, you always look at the bigger picture and not just the details.
  3. If you need to make a decision, you like to take every eventuality into account to see how the decision will affect you and others.

  5. You are interested in the morals and values of society and politics.
  6. When you meet someone, it is important that they share the same values as you if you are to be friends.
  7. You often consider the nature of consciousness.

  10. You find it hard to switch off and enjoy frivolous activities.

What’s good about having this kind of intelligence?

Improving your existential intelligence can help you see the bigger picture as well as allowing you to understand other people better. This can be helpful in work situations and in relationships.
People with high existential intelligence are intuitive, empathetic and considerate. They are also full of love and compassion for those around them from people, to animals, to plants and even the whole planet.
You can put these skills to great use in helping others, perhaps by nursing, counselling, coaching or for environmental causes.
Understanding your existential thoughts can also help you to live a rewarding and meaningful life.
If you have ever felt that something is missing in your life, it could be that you need to work on your existential intelligence to find out what has meaning to you. This way, you can achieve goals and dreams that will fulfil you and make you happier with life.

How to improve your existential intelligence?

If you would like to improve your existential intelligence, there are several things you can do.

Spend time exploring a philosophical or spiritual path you are drawn to.

If you have always had a hankering to know more about Buddha, Jesus or Socrates, get a book and delve deeper into their lives and philosophy to see what you can learn.
Alternatively, if you are not sure what aspect of philosophy or spirituality to pursue, take a look at several, both Eastern and Western, to see where it leads you.

Decision-making

Whenever you need to make a decision, take the time to consider all the possible outcomes and their effects. Try not to rush into decision making.
You want to make the decision that is right for you as well as for your company or family, so try to look at the decision from different points of view.

Start a journal to record your thoughts.

This can really help to develop your existential thinking. You could also join a philosophical, spiritual or environmental group.

Take a break from constant busyness and screen time so you can really think.

You might like to take a walk in nature or try a short meditation. This can really help you get in touch with yourself rather than drowning out your existential intelligence with distractions.

Volunteer to help those less fortunate than yourself.

Nothing gets you out of your own head and puts things in perspective more than helping those in need. As an added bonus, volunteering is proven to improve your happiness, too.

The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, is a children’s story with some very profound meanings and some quotes that will really make you think.
 

I have to admit that I never read the Little Prince as a child.

I think I wouldn’t have known what to make of it if I did. Even reading it as an adult I didn’t know what to make of it!
However, it is clear that The Little Prince touches on some very deep themes about the nature of life, love, friendship and more. The following Little Prince quotes show just how many philosophical themes are discussed in this small, but profound work.
The story tells of a pilot who crashes into the Sahara desert. He is attempting to fix his damaged plane when a little boy appears as if from nowhere and demands that he draws him a sheep. Thus begins a strange, enigmatic friendship that is both heartwarming and heartbreaking.
The Little Prince, it turns out, comes from a small asteroid where he is the only living being apart from a rather demanding rose bush. The Little Prince decides to leave his home and visit other planets to find knowledge.
The story tells of these encounters with rulers of strange worlds and de Saint-Exupéry has opportunities to demonstrate some philosophical themes that will make readers think.
On earth, as well as meeting the pilot, The Little price meets a Fox and  Snake. The fox helps him to truly understand the rose and the snake offers him a way to return to his home planet.
But his return journey comes at a high price. The book’s bittersweet ending is both thought-provoking and emotional. I would definitely recommend that you read The Little Prince if you haven’t already.
It is one of the most beautiful and profound children’s books there are. If you have older children, then you might like to read it with them as it can be a little overwhelming for them to read alone.

If you were driving a car in your dream and it’s stuck in your mind, it could be a sign from your subconscious. As to why we dream? There are many theories.
Freud was the first to put forward the idea that we all have hidden desires buried in our subconscious mind. Freud believed that dreams are a way of letting us know what these repressed desires are.

If you were nervous, then examine what’s going on between the pair of you in your normal life. Is there any friction? Are they trying to control your life? Or are they just trying to support you?

How well were they driving?

If you drove well, it means you are confident and in control in all areas of your life. However, if you didn’t, it is a sign of low self-esteem.
If someone else drove, consider how good their driving was. Were they driving too fast? This indicates you feel out of control. If they are driving too slow, you could be too impatient with others.

How fast were you driving?

If you were driving fast, then your dream may be telling you to slow downand enjoy the scenery a bit more. Relax with your family, take time off.
Conversely, if you were going slowly, it is an indication you are heading in the right direction, but you could work more efficiently.

If you got stuck in a traffic jam or were delayed for another reason, then your dream is telling you that you may need to look at other courses of action. Perhaps the route you are taking is not the best way for you.

There are obvious symbolic clues here. For example, a clean, tidy well-maintained car that runs smoothly is a good indication that all is running well in your life.

Did you crash?

This is a clear sign to slow down, your body has literally ‘crashed’ and needs to stop and take time off. It also signifies mental strain.
Has something important come to a sudden end? A job, relationship, have youlost something or someone very important recently?

Was there a fire in your car?

Fire in any dream represents two different factors; cleansing and anger. To decide which one is relevant in your driving dream, you should look at the context of the whole dream.
Who was with you in the car? In real life do you feel angry with them? Have they hurt you in some way? If the dream is about cleansing, have you come to the end of something in real life and you are ready to move on?

Are there other cars around you?

The main factor in driving dreams is what you were doing and the type of car you were in. However, if there were other cars around you, they are significant.
This is because they represent other aspects of you that you might not be aware of. For example, if they are people you know, they could indicate traits you don’t want to admit to owning or want to possess.

The meaning of life is one of those questions that make you think.  It is one we all ask ourselves, but one which encompasses so many other questions.

Finding the meaning of life can be almost impossible. It depends on who you are, how old you are, and what is truly important to you. We each value different things at different times, but there are a number of questions that make you think about the little intricacies of life.
Life is so much more than can be boiled down to one question, so here are ten questions that make you think about life as a sum of its parts.
  1. What is more important, progression or preservation?
The human race is pushing for more innovation and the next big invention, but we are doing so at the cost of the world we live in. The environment is suffering at the hands of our progression.
In 2016, half of the Great Barrier Reef was announced be dead due to bleaching. Microplastics have been found within the human digestive system. With so many environmental concerns emerging, it makes you wonder whether the progression of technology is coming at the cost of the preservation of the world we live in and even our own health.

2.Are we getting smarter or lazier?

Technology is one of human kind’s crowning achievements. Technology is deeply integrated into our daily lives and makes life so much easier. It is true that we are able to do so much more with technology than we have in the past, but it may be making us lazy.
With more technology comes less need to think. We can ask our smartphones the answer to any question and we no longer have to do the work ourselves. It can make us lazy, finding shortcuts where possible and reducing our attention span when the internet can’t answer the question for us.

3.Why don’t we have a global language?

Communication is one of the most important skills people enjoy. It is curious, then, that we haven’t evolved some kind of global language spoken by all to enable communication to thrive. The importance of culture and heritage has stunted global integration and highlight the importance of who we are as people.

4.Why do we let money ruin lives when it is something we ourselves created?

One of the most important questions that make you think about the meaning of life is the meaning of money. Money controls literally every aspect of our lives, even though humans created it.
We allow it to ruin the lives of those in poverty and give control to those with more. We allow it to grant status and judge those with less than us.  Philosophically speaking, the conundrum of money as something created by humans but the maker of misery for many of us is troubling.

5.Can we truly have faith in something we can’t prove?

Religion is a curious thing to many. For those who don’t believe, it can be confusing how one can have faith in something we cannot see.
Religion is not the only thing we believe in which we cannot see. We believe in time, probability, and some believe in aliens. We cannot prove that these things exist even though some phenomena are observable, but trust that these things exist even though the things themselves cannot be seen.
It is curious that we have such blind faith in scientific things we cannot see and yet judge others for faith in religion.

6.If fear didn’t exist, what would you do?

Fear is something that holds us all back. Fear of being hurt, fear of rejection, fear of failure. If fear didn’t exist, what would you do? What would you strive for? What would you try to achieve?

7.Are we born who we are or do we become who we are through experience?

The old nature versus nurture debate questions how we become the people we are today. How much of us is made up of genetics and what do we learn as we grow up?
It makes you wonder how much of life is within our control or whether a certain amount of destiny is involved with our future selves.

8.Why do we value some lives more than others?

We tend to care and sympathize with those who suffer close to us rather than those who suffer at a distance. We allow oceans and vast distances to remove us from the suffering of others, even though we are aware that it’s happening.
It seems to make us value the lives of some more than others rather than striving for equality for all.

9.Can time move at different paces?

We all know the phrase time flies when you’re having fun, but is it true? When we’re bored we notice time move slower and when we are enjoying ourselves it seems to speed up.
Although the construct of time never changes its pace, our experience of it does. It makes you realize that we must make the most of the time that we have.

10.Is love truly the answer?

Love is the subject of hundreds of love songs, poetry, and art, but is it really the answer, and, if it is, what is it the answer to? We can find happiness in achievements and in our own personal lives, but do we need love to feel complete?
Questions that make you think about the meaning of life don’t necessarily have an answer but can make you think about the most important aspects of life.  These ten questions may help you realize what is truly important.

Do you remember the movie Groundhog Day? Well, life sometimes feels stuck just like with the characters in that movie. Learn how to fix that.

You might be going through life feeling pretty happy and then all of a sudden, you realize you’ve hit a dead end. Life seems stuck…boring, and fairly uneventful. It feels like you are going through the motions just like in that film Groundhog Day.
In the movie, Bill Murry and Andy Mcdowell play two people in love who get stuck living one day over and over until they get something right. Do you feel that way?

Let’s get unstuck and do great things!

So, the goal is not to live like we’re in a Groundhog day sequel, right? Well, the objective is to apply a few ideasand rules in order to un-wedge ourselves from the rut we’ve created.
Yes, even though we probably didn’t mean to do so, we’ve gotten ourselves stuck, and it’s our job to change that. Listen up!

1. Perspective changes

Maybe you’re in a rut simply because of the way you look at things. Maybe you don’t see your life in the right light or maybe you haven’t seen an angle that could propel you over the edge and into newness. First off, you absolutely have to see things differently.
For some people, the grip of past lives and past situations stops them from moving forward. You will never be able to make a new life for yourself while holding onto the apron strings of the past. Let them go, immediately.
Now, open yourself up to new ideas by traveling, physical activity or even meditation to clear out the cobwebs. Either way, change the way you look at life and life will change too!

2. Be creative

Did you know that being artistic in some form can work wonders in your life? Being creative can also lift you from the norm and place you somewhere spectacular. The reason why being creative works so well with helping you get unstuck is that it makes you feel like someone else for a while.
You are no longer a housekeeper, mother, employee or wife. You are now an artist, a revolutionary, and a rebel! Being creative transports you to another dimension where you can create whatever you want to be. You can be creative through painting, writing, or even music, as long as you feel free to express yourself openly.

3. Recognize patterns

Just like in the Groundhog Day movie, you have to look for patterns in order to break free. If you’re stuck now, pay attention to the people you’re associating with, the environment you operate within and the overall vibes surrounding you. How are these things similar to times before when you were stuck in life?
When you discover the patterns and causes for being stuck, you can understand how to differentiate between people and things to keep and which ones to cut away from your life.
Yes, it’s just that simple and just that harsh. Sometimes, things have to be removed in order for you to live your best, most productive life.

4. Take care of YOU

One thing that many of us neglect is taking care of ourselves. When life seems to get stuck, the last thing we think about doing is exercising or eating healthy. When we feel stuck, we often eat bad foods or do risky things in an attempt to fill a void that’s opened up inside.
The truth is, this is the opposite of what we should be doing. When we feel like our own Groundhog day has arrived, we should kick it into high gear with self-care. We should get moving, we should visit the spa, and by all means, we should eat our best.
Why do you ask? Well, we can only understand and figure out how to get unstuck, if we are feeling our best. We should take care of us, so we can literally take care of our life.

5. Think about your purpose

Maybe you think you know what your purpose is, but did you know that this can change over time? Although it may seem frustrating to think your purpose changes, it really does. What might have seemed right for you in the past could be all wrong now. So, it’s time to re-examine what you were meant to do and be.
There are a few ways you can examine your purpose. What makes you happy? What inspires you to be a better person? There are so many questions you can ask yourself, and when you do, keep a journal of your honest answers.
Over time, you will feel a shift toward your destiny. You will also see your life moving once more toward a future.

6. Truly let go of the past

Just as your perspectives can change, so can your entire mindset. I want you to notice just how much of your time is spent thinking of the past.
I bet you would be surprised by the quantity of time spent with childhood memories and traumatic events. So much of your life is spent rehashing things that really don’t matter anymore. Can you change anything that has already happened?
You cannot change the past, and so why are you there so much? This could be the primary reason why you are stuck. One really raw way to get unstuck in life is to refuse to ponder past events any longer. Yes, it’s difficult, but the rewards of letting go of the past are amazing.

7. Start small

So, it’s clear by now that you want to get unstuck in life and move forward, right? Well, in order to truly feel this happening, you have to change things. Let’s be clear on one thing, you don’t have to make huge changes at first. It is quite alright to start with small steps.
For instance, move your furniture, change your daily routine, or even learn a new craft or hobby. All it takes is altering one area of your life to activate great changes in the future. You never know what might happen just by taking a different route to work.

No more Groundhog Day…I expect greatness!

There shall be no more Groundhog Days feeling trapped and feeling as though you are living the same day over and over again. No, from this moment forward, we are going to shake things up and bring great changes to our lives. These shall be positive changes, and things that we can cherish forever.
So, get off that couch, turn off the television, and do something different today. You will thank me later.
