The following Plato Quotes are profound, important and representative of his philosophy as a whole. However, before we examine these quotes, let’s take a look at who Plato was and what his philosophy amounts to.

Who Was Plato?

Plato (428/427 BC or 424/424 – 348/347BC) was born and died in Ancient Greece. He is one of the most famous and influential philosophers in the western world, and is, along with Socrates, responsible for building the foundations of philosophy as we know it today.
His works are vast, entertaining, interesting but also very complex in some parts. Yet, they are profoundly important and relevant to us still because of the core aim in all of his writings: how to reach a state of eudaimonia or the good life.
This means reaching a state of or attaining fulfilment. He concerned much of his life to helping us to achieve this. This idea is representative of what philosophy has been over the last two millennia and still is now: a means to help us live well.
The form that his writings take is significant and interesting and makes his ideas and teachings much more vivid and engaging. But what form of writing is this?

Plato’s Dialogues

All of his works are dialogues and are always set out as a conversation between characters. Most of the time, we see Socrates having a conversationwith counterparts as they discuss all manner of things.
These dialogues cover many subjects such as politics, love, courage, wisdom, rhetoric, reality and much more. However, they are all concerning themselves with the same thing: working towards an understanding of the good.
Plato was a follower of Socrates, and much of Plato’s own thoughts are probably expressed through the character of Socrates in his dialogues.
The conversations are a demonstration of elenchus or The Socratic Method, whereby Socrates elicits the truth through a series of questions and answers with the other characters in the dialogue. These conversations can also be entertaining; as well as discussing deeply important and relevant issues about life and society.
Yet, if you don’t want to read whole dialogues, there are certain quotes by Plato that shed light on his main ideas. Moreover, they can prove to be important and helpful when analysing and questioning our own lives.

Plato’s dialogues eloquently provide us with theories and ideas about ultimately how to improve society and ourselves so we can become fulfilled beings. They demonstrate the need for reason and analysis in our lives; only then can we truly reach the good life.
These dialogues showcase this clearly as a whole, however, there are certain quotes that give succinct insight into Plato’s ideas.
You can still take something of great value and worth from these quotes, even if you don’t read the dialogues. Here are 8 important and interesting quotes by Plato that we can learn from today:

“There will be no end to the troubles of states, or of humanity itself, till philosophers become kings in this world, or till those we now call kings and rulers really and truly become philosophers, and political power and philosophy thus come into the same hands.” – The Republic

 
The Republic is one of Plato’s most popular and widely taught dialogues. It discusses topics such as justice and the city-state. It heavily comments on aspects of politics within ancient Athens.
Plato is deeply critical of democracy and offers a theory of a governing body of a city-state that would be best suited to achieving the good.
Plato says that ‘philosopher kings’ should be the leaders of society. If philosophers were our leaders, then society would be just and everyone would be better off for it. This is alluding to a society where democracy isn’t the political structure of our communities.
However, the idea can be transferred to our society. If our political leaders were also philosophers, then we would have strong guidance on how to attain fulfilment in our lives (or so Plato thinks).
Plato wants a unification of philosophy and politics at the helm of political power and our governing bodies. If our leaders were those who spend their life guiding us on how to live a good life, then maybe our society and our lives would improve.

“The inexperienced in wisdom and virtue, ever occupied with feasting and such, are carried downward, and there, as is fitting, they wander their whole life long, neither ever looking upward to the truth above them nor rising toward it, nor tasting pure and lasting pleasures.” – The Republic

 
Those who don’t make an effort to learn and become wise can never achieve fulfilment or realise how to live a good life. This refers to Plato’s Theory of Forms, whereby true knowledge is in the unintelligible realm.
We must learn and educate ourselves in the material world in order to gain an understanding of these forms, and then we can attain true knowledge of the good.
This theory is complex, so we do not need to dwell on it much now. However, the ideas are transferable to our own lives.
We cannot hope to progress and move forward in our lives, mend our troubles and anxieties if we do not make a personal effort to do so.
We must learn, seek advice and strive to be virtuous if we are to live a fulfilled life and minimise the suffering that we encounter.

“On the other hand, if I say that it is the greatest good for a man to discuss virtue every day and those other things about which you hear me conversing and testing myself and others, for the unexamined life is not worth living for men, you will believe me even less.” – The Apology

 
The Apology is an account of Socrates’ defence when he was facing trial in Ancient Athens. Socrates was accused of impiety and corrupting the youth, and this dialogue allegedly recounts his own legal defence.
The famous line: “the unexamined life is not worth living” is attributed to Socrates. Indeed, it does reflect much of what Socrates appeared to believe when practising his philosophy. But we only learn of Socrates through Plato’s dialogues so we can say it reflects Plato’s philosophical thought as well.
We must examine and analyse the different aspects of our lives in order to work towards fulfilment. It is not worth living an unexamined life because you will not recognise how to change or improve your life for the better. An unexamined life can never reach a state of eudaimonia.

“Nor must one, when wronged, inflict wrong in return, as the majority believe, since one must never do wrong” – Crito

 
Socrates was sentenced to death after his trial, despite his defence. Crito is a dialogue where Socrates’ friend, Crito, offers to help Socrates escape from prison. The dialogue focuses on the subject of justice.
Crito believes that Socrates has been unjustly sentenced, but Socrates points out that escaping from prison would also be unjust.
When we are wronged, performing a wrong or immoral act will not resolve the matter, even though it may provide us with some fleeting satisfaction. There will inevitably be repercussions.
Plato echoes the popular idiom “two wrongs don’t make a right”. We must be reasonable and prudent in the face of injustice, and not act on impulse.

“For consider what good you will do yourself or your friends by breaking our agreements and committing such as wrong. It is pretty obvious that your friends will themselves be in danger of exile, disfranchisement, and loss of property.” Crito

 
The decisions we make can have an effect and repercussions on those around us. We must be wary of this.
We may feel we have been wronged, but we should be rational and restrained in these situations. Only then can you sensibly work past events that have caused you suffering, or else you may make matters worse.

“Rhetoric, it seems, is a producer of persuasion for belief, not for instruction in the matter of right and wrong … And so the rhetorician’s business is not to instruct a law court or a public meeting in matters of right and wrong, but only to make them believe.” Gorgias

 
Gorgias is dialogue that tells of a conversation between Socrates and a group of sophists. They discuss rhetoric and oratory and attempt to give definitions of what they are.
This extract says that a rhetorician (for example, a politician) or a public speaker is more concerned with persuading the audience than with what is actually true. We should use this as reference and guidance when listening to the rhetoricians of our own times.
Plato wants us to be careful of the information that we are being fed. Make an effort to educate yourself and come to your own conclusions rather than being consumed by entertaining and attractive speeches.
This feels achingly relevant considering current and recent political phenomena.

“I tell you that whoever is led by his teacher thus far in relation to love matters, and contemplates the various beautiful things in order and in the correct way, will come now towards the final goal of matters of love, and will suddenly catch sight of a beauty amazing in its nature” The Symposium

 
The Symposium tells of a conversation between several people at a dinner party as they all give their own definitions of what they think love is. They all come up with differing accounts, but Socrates’ speech appears most relevant to Plato’s own philosophical ideas.
Socrates tells of a conversation he has with the prophetess Diotima. What is explained is what is known as Plato’s Ladder of Love.
This is essentially the idea that love is a form of education and development of the self from the love of the physical to eventually the love of the form of beauty.
Love can begin as physical attraction, but the ultimate goal should be to use love to become wiser and more knowledgeable. This will allow for fulfilment and the living of a truly good life.
Love should not just be the companionship with and caring for another, but also a means of improving oneself. It can, for example, help you to deal with and understand past traumas, or encourage you to become a better person. It is a good thing if you change because of your lover.

“Knowledge is the food of the soul” – Protagoras

 
Protagoras is a dialogue concerned with the nature of sophistry – using clever but false arguments to persuade people in a discussion. Here, a strikingly succinct quote sums up Plato’s philosophy.
Knowledge is the fuel to become fulfilled individuals. Learning and striving for wisdom is the route towards living a good life. Thinking rationally about issues about our lives will allow us to deal with them better, and so will allow us to be more content with our lives.

Why these quotes by Plato are important and relevant

These Plato quotes are very relevant and helpful to our own lives and society today. We are all sensitive and troubled beings who long for contentment and happiness.
Plato dedicated his life to helping us understand how to achieve this. We must think rationally about issues in our lives and society, strive for wisdom and be willing to change in order to improve ourselves.
Only then can you hope to reach a state of eudaimonia. These Plato quotes shed light on how he believes we can do this.
These quotes are brief, and only partially represent Plato’s philosophical work as a whole. But the fact their relevance is tangible two and a half thousand years later demonstrates Plato’s lasting importance and impact on society, and our own individual lives.

6 Mysterious Disappearances That Were Never Explained.

 


 




There is an intensely eerie quality in cases of mysterious disappearances. The loss of people as a result of violent crime is one thing. But an unexplained absence is on a completely different level.

In mysterious disappearances, it is the silence of the empty space where the person used to be, and the lack of explanation to help us piece the events together that chills us.


Mysterious disappearances defy the logical chain of events in missing persons’ cases. Consequently, they make us feel intrigued yet powerless.

Perhaps this involuntary yet seductive pull is the reason why the public has long found fascination in unexplained mysteries and missing persons cases, or why we love a good mystery story. Why urban legends and the stuff of myth stem from such stories.
Mysterious disappearances have been occurring since the dawn of recorded civilization.

The first case of a person going missing without explanation lies in the case of Romulus, one of the legendary founders of Rome. Through the centuries and until today, a host of famous disappearances have accumulated.

Here are some of them:

Flannan Isle Lighthouse Keepers


The mystery of the lightkeepers has inspired many a song and ballad, the most famous being by the band “Genesis”. The mystery concerns a lighthouse near Eilean Mòr, one of the Flannan Isles in the northernmost Outer Hebrides region of Scotland.

The cluster of islands, under the nickname “the Seven Hunters”, supposedly took its name from Saint Flannan, the seventh-century Irish preacher and abbot.

In 1900, Donal Macarthur, James Ducat and Thomas Marshall vanished from the lighthouse on Flannan Isle. The three keepers were at the end of a 14-day shift but remained in the Isle due to bad weather. After a passing ship noticed that the lighthouse was dark, a search began for them.

Following the disappearance, massive investigation and speculations ensued. The investigators did not have much to go on. The most credible theory is that a freak wave swept the men out to sea during the storm.


The island was completely deserted, and unmade beds and cups still full were in the lighthouse. There were no clues of a struggle or an accident happening. No bodies were ever found.

The three men had vanished in the foam.


Ambrose Bierce



“As to me, I leave here tomorrow for an unknown destination”.

Such were the closing lines of Ambrose Bierce’s last ever letter to his friend, Blanche Partington. The date was December 26, 1913. The following day, one of America’s most widely known and influential writers, journalists and satirists, would leave no trace.

Bierce, under his capacity as a war journalist and correspondent as well as an adventurer, went to follow Sancho Villa’s Army during the unfolding revolution in Mexico. Historians believe that sometime during the fighting he perished, or criminals murdered him.

Nobody ever found any remains of indication of what really happened. And so, one of the founders of ghost literature and horror stories had a fitting end to his unconventional life.


Roanoke Colony

As far as mysterious disappearances go, Roanoke Colony is one of the most extreme. For a person to go missing is strange for sure. But a whole colony? Now that’s something else entirely.

Roanoke received funding by Sir Walter Raleigh and was the first attempt at a permanent colony in North America. Since the very beginning, the mission faced many difficulties; storms, shortage of funds and food, illness, you name it. The harsh conditions forced the majority of the prospective colonists to leave, a small part remaining behind.

By the time the ones who left returned with reinforcements during a second expedition, the entire colony was missing.

There was only a single clue to indicate what happened to them: the word “CROATOAN” carved into a tree.

Nobody knows what happened. Speculation suggests that local tribes either killed or assimilated the colonists. The Croatan are a small Native American group living in the coastal areas of what is now North Carolina.

They may have been a branch of the larger Roanoke people, a tribe with Alonquian roots, or allied with them. The story of Roanoke has inspired certain well-known adaptations, such as a season of the popular TV show “American Horror Story”.


Connie Converse

Elizabeth Eaton Converse had such a poignant life. She was one of the first singer-songwriters, and her work and life remained underground until the 2009 release of her song recordings, titled “How Sad, How Lovely”.


During the 50’s, she moved to New York, writing and singing songs accompanied by her acoustic guitar. They were mostly melancholy or playful tunes, about love, loss and everyday life.

She had a distinctly old-style folk sound. Her music did not yet have elements of electric instruments like the folk music that would come after Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel’s rise to success.

As the years passed, Connie had been drinking and smoking a lot, and become disillusioned by the discrepancy between the life she had dreamt of and the life she had had.

In 1974, Connie Converse sent letters to a few close family members and friends, informing them that she was going to set out and make a fresh start. That was the last anyone heard of her.

How sad and lovely indeed.


Megumi Yokota and the North Korean Abductions

And then there’s North Korea. During the period between 1977 to 1983, North Korea was responsible for at least thirteen mysterious disappearances.

According to official announcements made by North Korea at the time and ex post facto, a number of Japanese persons, most of them teenagers or young adults, were abducted in order to train as Korean Spies.


One of them was a student named Megumi Yokota. North Korean agents reportedly dragged her into a boat and took her straight to North Korea to a facility which taught North Korean spies about South Korean customs and practices.

After also learning Korean, Megumi forcibly married another captive and taught North Korean agents how to pass as Japanese and assimilate into Japanese routine.

In 2002, North Korea admitted having orchestrated the abduction but claimed that Megumi had committed suicide. It returned what it said were her remains. The captive she had had to marry corroborated the story, claiming she had committed suicide after a bout of mental illness ensuing from her captivity.

Megumi’s remains returned to Japan sometime during the 00’s, though controversy as to their authenticity accompanied them.

The North Korean abductions made headlines once, but sadly enough no international legal action ever took place.


Yuba County Five and the American Dyatlov Pass

On the night of February 24, 1978, Gary Mathias, age 25, Bill Sterling, age 29, Jack Huett, age 24, Ted Weiher, age 32, and Jack Madruga, age 30, stopped at a local convenience store in Yuba City, California.

It was just after a basketball game they had attended, and they meant to buy snacks and drinks and go for a ride. That was the last time anyone saw them alive.

The press dubbed their mysterious disappearances “The American Dyatlov Pass”, after a disappearance incident involving Soviet hikers in 1959.

Police discovered the youth’s car in a remote part of Plumas National Forest. There was no sight of them in the surrounding area.

Investigators could not, however, determine why they had abandoned it as they could easily have pushed it out of the snowpack it was in.
A few months later, the bodies started showing up.

All of them, at least, apart from Gary Mathias, who the police never found. The other four bodies lay in a shelter approximately 32 kilometers from where the car had been. They showed signs of exposure, famine and dehydration.

The police still have no idea what happened. Why was the car where they found it? Why did the bodies show signs of exposure, starvation and hypothermia despite the ample provisions left next to them? Even more perplexing is the disappearance of Gary Mathias.
The above were just a fraction of mysterious disappearances will never cease to attract us.

It is in the absence that one finds the most material, and it is the silence of a vanishing that is most deafening.

Do you ever feel like you’re expected to keep track of too much information? That there’s more going on in your life and the world around you than you can possibly remember? If so you’re not alone. The truth is most people are overwhelmed with the amount of informationthrown at them on a daily basis. Human evolution and our ability to retain information

From an evolutionary perspective, humans are built to do two things: travel long distances on two feet and keep a massive mental catalog of facts and details about the world around us.
For hundreds of thousands of years, these basic skills helped early humans to successfully integrate themselves into a multitude of different environments around the planet ranging from the subtropical to the subarctic.
If you could somehow travel back in time and talk to our early ancestors, you would quickly realize the average “caveman” or “cavewoman” had an indelible memory regarding the natural world.
They knew everything they could about every planet and every animal in the area. They kept accurate track of the seasons and could quickly calculate how all these factors could and would intertwine to influence their lives. Most important of all, they caught on to the ways in which they could turn around and influence their environment.
What this means is that humans are bioengineered by Mother Nature to be memory machines. The only problem is that society has changed so much in the last few thousand years that our brains haven’t caught up yet. We’re expected to remember thingswithout being exposed to them the way we would have been thousands of years ago.
With this in mind, it’s important for modern humans to utilize their natural information retention capabilities in order to remember the things modern life expects us to.

Here are a few ways to improve your brain’s ability to retain information:

Repeat

The extreme amount of information available to the average person – most of which comes via the internet – is overwhelming, to say the least. For most people, it’s not a question of whether they can find information but rather what information do they want to find?
More times than not, Google has you covered with a simple search. This means lots of modern learning experiences are one-off events where the individual is unlikely to encounter that information again.
Contrast this with the experience of our ancient ancestors, whose worlds were much smaller in scope. They found themselves repeatedly exposed to the same things throughout their lives. This forced a level of repetition which ultimately led to expert-level retention.
Modern humans can also rely on repeat exposure to information to improve their memory retention capabilities.

One major advantage modern humans have over our ancient ancestors is widespread literacy. The ability to read is incredibly vital for retaining information in the modern age. There is simply too much information to do it any other way.
According to transcription experts and others working directly with the transfer of spoken language to written words, the process of seeing speech on paper or on screen has a potent impact on memory. This is because a word is ultimately a symbol; humans have a better chance of remembering an idea if they can connect it to a visual construct.

Explaining your interpretation of information to others is a crucial part of the retention process. In order to better retain information in the future, consider writing a report. Even a 100-word paragraph can prove effective in helping to establish long-term memory of a given event or learning experience.

Listening to what others have to say about a certain piece of information is like getting a whole extra brain’s worth of critical thinking prowess. Their insights can help you to remember things you may have originally overlooked because of any number of factors and vice versa.

Debate

Lastly, effective information retention requires some form of debate and discourse. This doesn’t always mean two parties have to disagree in order for both to successfully remember the facts correctly. Instead, there should be an airing of disagreements where they exist.
Attempting to extinguish each other’s opposing view can only lead to a reduction of your ability to retain information. On the other hand, when disagreeing sides are willing to debate, this will generate critical thinking about a given topic. This will further cement the information in their heads for future use.
This has the added effect of expanding their knowledge base, which ensures the information they retain is accurate all-around.
Human evolution has made us into beings with incredible memories. While modern life seems to challenge this trait, modern men and women can rely on their natural abilities to adapt. After all, it’s what we do best.

For instance, if you can clearly hear voices in your dream, and you can remember the statements made, then you will often awake and hear exactly what was spoken. This also works for visual experiences and other strong sensory feelings. Pay close attention to these things.

2. Dream frustration

If your dream seems to irritate you both while dreaming and when awake afterward, you may be having dreams of precognition. You may wake up and be agitated from the dream and then fall back to sleep.
Some of these dreams can be visions of terrible things while others can be positive events. Either way, even with good dreams, they will have a sense of irritation about them.

3. Urgency

Since precognitive dreaming means witnessing future situations derived from psychic abilities, you will often feel an urgency about these dreams. After you wake, you will feel a need to do something or be somewhere.

How to interpret your precognitive dreams?

Analyzing dreams is important because there is a reason why you have them. There are different ways you can see these dreams as well and simple steps toward understanding where they come from and why they happen.
Here, let’s look at the basics.

1. The dream journal

I bet most of you’ve heard of keeping a dream journal, haven’t you? Well, as a teenager, I attempted to do this. Except my biggest problem was remembering the task from one day to the next. The truth is, If I didn’t write down the dream when I first awoke, I would forget many elements from the dream, which was irritating once I remembered later in the day.
So, it’s kind of obvious what you should do. As soon as you wake up, write down as many elements of the dream as you can. Even if there are only pieces of the dream in your memory. If you don’t dream, then write down, “No recalled dreams”. This statement may even kickstart frequent dreaming.

2. Forget the dictionaries for dreams

Stop using these dream interpretation guides and just pay attention to the elements of the psychic dreams. Most of the time, these details will be clear in symbolism.
Just think about what happened in your dream and connect images to the events in your life. For example, one night, I dreamt of being in a war zone, and I believe that is because I am at war in my mind with mental illness.

3. Simple details

Pay attention to simple details in the dream. Although these elements may seem fairly lame, they could have a greater meaning. Ask questions about the details and learn even more about what the dream may mean to you.

4. Therapists and dreams

Do not rely on great revelations from therapists who use dream interpretation as their only tool. Actually, these aren’t what real therapists do. Instead, quality therapists and counselors usually get to know the patient long before speaking of dreams and dream elements.
Images in the dreams could come from deep roots from childhood, or even present negative circumstances that are revealed in private sessions.

The power of the precognitive dream

Oh, how powerful dreams of precognition may be. They tell of negative and positive events which leave us with a foreboding feeling, or at least what we’re starting to believe.
But, please remember, there could be much more to your dreams than visions of the future. In fact, they could simply be dreams warning you that you have needed changes in your life.
So, examine your life, and connect those details with reality. Then you can interpret and separate dreams from reality, leaving the rest for fate.

What Is the Gambler’s Fallacy and How It Affects Your Decisions.

Do you make decisions based on probability, or take the chance? Maybe you have a gambler’s fallacy thought process.
If you flip a coin and do this three times, and it lands on heads, can you say the next toss will also land on heads? Your answer may well determine whether you have gambler’s fallacy or not.

What exactly is the gambler’s fallacy?

Researchers Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahnemanrationalized thought processes related to the fallacy of gambling on their research paper “Judgement under uncertainty: Heuristics and Biases” 1.
They said: “Many decisions are based on beliefs concerning the outcome of an election, the guilt of a defendant, or the future value of a dollar. These beliefs express themselves in statements such as “I think that…” or “chances are….” Or even “It is unlikely that…” and so forth.”
These statements use heuristic principles. People rely on these to reduce the complex tasks of assessing probabilities. They can also predict values to simpler judgmental operations.
Going back to the coin-flipping example. A decision maker, using rational thinking, knows the chance of another coin flip landing on heads is 50-50. However, according to Tversky and Kahneman’s definition, it’s never by chance that winning streaks happen, so we shouldn’t adopt this belief.
It’s a misconception many call the gambler’s fallacy.  Research has shown this fallacy is alive and well in a multitude of everyday scenarios. In fact, there is evidence that it can cause bias in decision making.

How can it impact your decision making?

Tversky and Kahneman’s research describes three heuristics that are used to make judgments under uncertainty. These include representativeness, availability of instances or scenarios and adjustment of an anchor.
These heuristics summarizes that Tversky and Kahneman, are highly economical and usually effective, but they lead to systematic and predictable errors. A better understanding of these heuristics and biases could improve judgments and making decisions in situations of uncertainty.
This “better understanding” is present in other recent research. This research shows how individuals might, in subjective cases, be biased against decisions.
Decision-Making under the Gambler’s Fallacy: Evidence from Asylum Judges, Loan Officers, and Baseball Umpires” by Daniel Chen, Tobias J. Moskowitz and Kelly Shue 2 is one example.
Their research found that with all else equal the judge approves the case before an asylum seeker has higher points of 3.3 % within fair situations. This was true with several settings that were different.
They noted that it is likely that a judge influences decisions related to a previous event and that with both negative or positive decisions and previous cases of similarity, The sequence lengths will be increased.
Similar happenings occurred in India. Completed research came from loan officers who were also students. Reviews of processed files were completed by the same officers. Recommendations were considered on the subject of loan approval.
Pressure was placed on true assessment at various levels. This was because of schemes faced for different reasons. The previous review of the files helped authors study how well and fair the officers made decisions. Plus, they were able to explore whether loans on recommendation were, on average, performing better.

Can circumstances affect the gambler’s fallacy?

Looking at the same research of the loan officers, a basic plan rewards loans despite the quality of these loans. Loan officers who previously rejected loans, even though incentives were good, had a small decrease in chance of approval in the review when the loan before was approved. There was little concern about bias when accuracy with strong incentives were present.
There is also evidence of this in the sporting world. The researchers looked at baseball and analyzed umpires in the major leagues. After 1.5 million pitches were analyzed, between 2008 and 2012, batters did not swing when going to bat.
The researchers then controlled many situations of the game including the speed of the pitch, count of pitches, what happens in the game, the winner, and if the home team had the batter. Whatever data that was collected was their reliance. To track speed and understand trajectories in the major league, they had to use the PITCH/system.
When a pitch was a strike, umpires rarely called the next one a strike. In fact, this was 1.5 % true. There was a bias even more if two calls were the same. The next call has a higher percentage in this bias.
When it comes to regretful calls do umpires make subsequent calls? Is it fair? Is there a gambler’s fallacy? Umpires were reluctant to make an opposing call after an incorrect call but felt comfortable with this same act after a correct decision. This was noticed by researchers.

Here are the facts as we know them

“Fairness concerns and a desire to be equally nice to two opposing teams are unlikely to explain our results.”
The gambler’s fallacy can be seen in studies by various researchers where identical situations and numbers of decisions are going in the same direction and happening close together.
Experienced decision-makers took less notice of this at all. And this could be a reason for concern.

Just talking to someone isn’t going to work anymore. You must understand the different types of communication.
I can strike up a conversation with anyone, to be honest. But this doesn’t mean I’m utilizing a healthy form of communication. Some types of communication do not work as well as others, and this is why we have to learn how to master the right words, phrases, and attitudes in order to be successful in life.

What Are the Communication Types?

Being able to communicate effectively is an art. We start with nothing and then move on to transfer knowledge and feelings to another.
First off, there are two basic forms of communication, or rather categories. One type is based on different channels and the other is based on purpose and style. But let’s break it down a bit further.

Here are the basic types of communication:

  • Verbal communication
  • Non-verbal communication
  • Visual communication
  • Written communication
    • Formal communication
    • Informal communication
Let’s talk about all these types in more detail and also discuss the ways we can master them.

1. Verbal communication

One of the most basic types of true communication is verbal form. Verbal communication is simple and straight forward, and most people prefer this method. Why? Because verbal communication allows you to get your point across quickly and with fewer misunderstandings.
Take, for instance, scheduling a business meeting can be done by email but would work more effectively in a face to face situation. This choice is professional and can even be done via skype or any other form of online verbal or visual communication tool.
So, I would say it’s one of the most common and popular forms of getting your message across.

How to master verbal communication?

There are a few ways you can master your words. Remember, there is great power behind what you say. So, let’s practice a few ways to control what comes out of your mouth:
  • Depending on who you’re talking to, you will want to adjust your vocabulary. This is because people want to feel comfortable around you. If you feel like you’re talking to a more intellectual group of people, you can use an expanded vocabulary. If you’re in a group of less educated individuals, you should use basic vocabulary. Of course, do not let this variance be known to the one you’re talking to. It’s insulting.
  • When speaking, try not to talk in monotone. Most people follow what you’re saying much better when you alter the pitch of your voice.
  • The speed at which you talk is also something to understand. Speaking fast means excitement while speaking slowly means you wish to convey an important message and you want them to understand you. This will depend greatly on the situation.

2. Non-verbal communication

Non-verbal forms of communication are also considered interpersonal. These are seen as body language, basically. It’s how you appear when you walk into the room or sit in your chair during a meeting.
Do you slouch or sit up straight? Do you walk with your head up and with confidence? These are different ways to communicate great meaning to others.

How to master non-verbal communication?

  • As mentioned above, the way you walk says lots about what you’re communicating. Walking upright and with your head up conveys confidence while walking with a slouch says you are unsure of yourself.
  • Fidgeting means you are nervous
  • Making eye contact conveys honesty and also lets the other person know that what they say is important.

3. Visual communication

If you understand how visual aids are used in presentations, then you will understand this message transference. The use of visual communication is seen in video representations of products and even brochures.
When a company wishes to get a quick message across about some product or service they sell, visual communication is best. It’s done without words or letters at some times and brings a striking message to customers.
Visual communications can also be seen in informal settings like between friends. If someone wants to tell a friend about a problem, taking a picture of broken objects or injuries can get more across than words. It’s a quick way to understand the urgency of the situation.
No words are needed when a serious visual communication is used.

How to master visual communication?

  • Basically, the best way to master visual communications is to create a clear and concise image of your idea. Whether you are trying to sell a product or a service, visualization is attractive to the eye and creates a desire to learn more.
  • Another way to master visual communication is to pair it successfully with non-verbal and verbal communication. Remember, how you speak and how you appear will increase interest in the image you wish to share.

4. Written communication

With written communication, there are two subtypes. One is formal and the other is informal.

Formal communication

With formal communication, you see the use of professional emails, memos, and reports. This form of communication must be taken seriously and acted upon immediately.
The workplace uses written communication to save time by sending an important message to multiple people. You can clearly see the advantages of such an exchange.
How to master formal communication?
  • Mastering formal written communication is all about structure, grammar, and tone. You are usually taken more seriously when your emails and reports are constructed properly.
  • When important communication must be sent in a timely manner, DO NOT BE LATE! I cannot stress this enough.
  • Understand the person you are speaking to and whether they appreciate a professional tone or a casual one. Some people respond better to totally professional words in emails while others prefer a friendly down-to-earth acquaintance. It’s best to do a background check, if possible, on who you’re contacting before you ever talk to them through email.

Informal communication

With informal communication, this means sending messages via social media platforms.
Although businesses may use this mode of communication as well, many others can send humorous statements and quick reminders with these tools. It’s like the old music lyric, “ I heard it through the grapevine”.
Yes, in some ways, this is a type of transference that isn’t always reputable but many times entertaining.
Mastering informal communication
  • When it comes to informal communication, like talking to friends or family, there aren’t any set in stone rules. However, being considerate is best anyway. Most friends and family wish to be treated with a certain amount of respect when being spoken to, even via social media.
  • When communicating informally, you must also understand who you’re talking to. If you know the other person, it may be okay to joke around and poke insults. However, if they are fairly new acquaintances, you might want to hold back on the hilarity.
  • Do not use slander, racism, sexism, or gender insults when posting comments on social media. This is hurtful and it’s bullying. It’s just plain wrong. Learn to be tolerant of differences and treat people the way you wish to be treated. Maybe your lifestyle isn’t their cup of tea either.

Keep lines of communication open

Understanding the types of communication is just the start. It’s also important to communicate in general instead of keeping things bottled up. It’s important to be open about what needs to be done, what needs to be said and just presenting a friendly greeting every now and then.
Without communication, we lose a great deal of credibility in our actions and appearance. So, first, let’s learn the different types of successful communication, and then let’s learn to master them as well. I know you can do it, so let’s give it a shot.

Animal intelligence could stretch to more than just an elephant’s excellent memory! As these examples will reveal.

The intelligence of animals surpasses what we realize. But the first question is, how is animal intelligence measured? There have been many experiments carried out that could prove animal intelligence really exists. We only have to look at Pavlov’s Dogs study to see how animals can quickly learn to associate a sound with behaviour or action.

But other, far more compelling research shows activity is more evident than we thought when it comes to the brains of animals.

Here are just a couple of impressive things that reveal animal intelligence at its peak!

Animals are spiritual beings

Of course, you heard that right. There is evidence to suggest animals can react emotionally to their surroundings. They can feel and respond to grief, e.g. in a death, and can express the wonderful feeling of existence itself.

Psychologists Marc Bekoff and his colleague Steven Kotler looked at whether animals really experienced spirituality. Bekoff and Kotler found ample evidence that animals can have a morally conscious and emotional intelligence.

Whilst Bekoff and Kotler’s work is anecdotal, Darwinian theory supports it well. The belief of Darwin was evolutionary continuity. This belief states that there were no different kinds of intelligence, only different degrees with the various species.

“The bottom line is that if we have something, they (other animals) do too. It would behoove us to study the questions at hand rather than dismiss them because animals can’t possibly do or experience something that we think is uniquely human.”

Only humans were self-conscious, linguistic, moral, and rational. This is what we believed for a long time. Now we know the truth. There’s more startling evidence as well. It seems that animals could possibly think about pains and pleasures from the past,

Darwin said. They actually possess “excellent memories and some power of imagination”.


Solving puzzles is just as easy for crows as 5-year old children.

Again, this could be the title of a well-thumbed kids’ comic book. But experiments recently conducted, and many of them, suggests truth in the crow’s intelligence. These are indeed creatures with remarkable talent, especially when it comes to solving problems.

The University of Auckland researchers discovered that crows noticed that liquid rises when objects are dropped into tubes of water, water which held a treat. They would then be able to reach the treat that was inside. If the water levels were higher, they could get the treat faster as well. Objects that sank instead of floated would also reduce the time it took for the treat to come to the top of the tube.

Crows can also bend a wire to fish treats from small tubes. This was also quickly realized by the research team. This is why researchers compare a crow’s intelligence is to 5-7-year-olds.

Elephants can show empathy

An elephant never forgets, right? But, they can also seemingly show understanding and empathy. During controlled experiments, elephants showed their desire to work together with tasks. When learning to pull a rope to acquire a treat, they did this together instead of alone.

Contrary to what some may believe, elephants do not ponder long over the dead. They have been known to eat their dead or at least, sniff them and walk away. As for their reaction to remains, such as bones, an elephant may linger for a while or become aggravated for some unknown reason.

A recent study proves such behavior: When an African elephant sees a skull from its own kind, it stares longer than when rhino or buffalo skulls are introduced. It’s the same with sticks as opposed to ivory.

The elephant is smart enough to know the difference between something originating from their kind and something else entirely.

Dogs can be taught words

We’ve all tried to teach Fido how to shake hands and Rover to cartwheel. But John Pilley, Psychology researcher, went a step further and trained his dog, Chaser to recognize over a thousand toys, by name. What’s more, over 90% of the time, Chaser could recognize certain toys when Pilley asked for them.

Chaser has learned even more, including recognizing verbs and nouns taught by Pilley Instructions are easy for her, she can put her paw and nose on objects, and even pick them up.

This is an achievement of intelligence for canines, and all it took was hours of intensive training. Chaser is special and not all dogs can learn at her pace.

Picking locks are easy for Cockatoos

Finally, let’s learn about the cheeky Cockatoo. They too display animal intelligence enough to understand tricky puzzles and solve them, all for a delicious treat. A 2013 study by Alice Auersperg, revealed the difficulty of such puzzles, and that the bird actually has to first open the box. Here’s how the trick worked.

Inside the box was a cashew. So, the cockatoo had to pull out a bolt, remove a pin, take out a screw, turn a wheel, and removed a latch by using a sliding technique. All these things, the Cockatoo accomplished fairly easy.

Without opposable thumbs, as humans have, this did take a long time. It did take two hours for the Cockatoo, but eventually, the bird solved the intricate puzzle. A bird had a goal and completed the goal, a goal that wasn’t an easy and quick task. This says quite a bit about the bird’s perseverance, wouldn’t you say.

Whilst this research can be contested, it could also lay the foundations for new ways of thinking about animal intelligence. Next time you spend time with your pet, maybe you can watch them more, and learn a few morals and lessons about determination.

Again, this could be the title of a well-thumbed kids’ comic book. But experiments recently conducted, and many of them, suggests truth in the crow’s intelligence. These are indeed creatures with remarkable talent, especially when it comes to solving problems.

The University of Auckland researchers discovered that crows noticed that liquid rises when objects are dropped into tubes of water, water which held a treat. They would then be able to reach the treat that was inside. If the water levels were higher, they could get the treat faster as well. Objects that sank instead of floated would also reduce the time it took for the treat to come to the top of the tube.

Crows can also bend a wire to fish treats from small tubes. This was also quickly realized by the research team. This is why researchers compare a crow’s intelligence is to 5-7-year-olds.

Elephants can show empathy

An elephant never forgets, right? But, they can also seemingly show understanding and empathy. During controlled experiments, elephants showed their desire to work together with tasks. When learning to pull a rope to acquire a treat, they did this together instead of alone.

Contrary to what some may believe, elephants do not ponder long over the dead. They have been known to eat their dead or at least, sniff them and walk away. As for their reaction to remains, such as bones, an elephant may linger for a while or become aggravated for some unknown reason.

A recent study proves such behavior: When an African elephant sees a skull from its own kind, it stares longer than when rhino or buffalo skulls are introduced. It’s the same with sticks as opposed to ivory.

The elephant is smart enough to know the difference between something originating from their kind and something else entirely.

Dogs can be taught words

We’ve all tried to teach Fido how to shake hands and Rover to cartwheel. But John Pilley, Psychology researcher, went a step further and trained his dog, Chaser to recognize over a thousand toys, by name. What’s more, over 90% of the time, Chaser could recognize certain toys when Pilley asked for them.

Chaser has learned even more, including recognizing verbs and nouns taught by Pilley Instructions are easy for her, she can put her paw and nose on objects, and even pick them up.

This is an achievement of intelligence for canines, and all it took was hours of intensive training. Chaser is special and not all dogs can learn at her pace.

Picking locks are easy for Cockatoos

Finally, let’s learn about the cheeky Cockatoo. They too display animal intelligence enough to understand tricky puzzles and solve them, all for a delicious treat. A 2013 study by Alice Auersperg, revealed the difficulty of such puzzles, and that the bird actually has to first open the box. Here’s how the trick worked.

Inside the box was a cashew. So, the cockatoo had to pull out a bolt, remove a pin, take out a screw, turn a wheel, and removed a latch by using a sliding technique. All these things, the Cockatoo accomplished fairly easy.

Without opposable thumbs, as humans have, this did take a long time. It did take two hours for the Cockatoo, but eventually, the bird solved the intricate puzzle. A bird had a goal and completed the goal, a goal that wasn’t an easy and quick task. This says quite a bit about the bird’s perseverance, wouldn’t you say.

The fear of failure is more common than you think. Most of us are constantly thinking about what could go wrong in life. It is a strong emotion. It keeps us from doing great things with our lives.
I know this first hand as many times I trust fear more than success. Being afraid, unfortunately, rules a great part of my life. And yes, I know what it comes from.
Being afraid that you will fail is what keeps us from taking risks for new jobs, new relationships, and other potentially successful decisions. It’s not protecting us all the time, it’s doing more damage than good.

A closer look at the fear of failure

Atychiphobia is another name for the clinical condition of being afraid of failure. It’s closely related to the fear of rejection. In the worst cases of this fear, some may get stuck in a cycle of either ditching appointments or the act of arriving over-prepared and early. Both symptoms derive from a foreboding that something bad will happen.

Some symptoms of the fear of failure are as follows:

  • Nausea
  • Rapid breathing
  • Nervousness
  • Rapid pulse
  • Panic attacks
  • Sweating
  • Headaches
  • Tension in the muscles
There are more symptoms of being frozen in fear. Just like most other types of fears, this terror creates a need for what’s called a sanctuary, or basically the safety of your home. Some people never want to leave home either.

What creates the fear of not being good enough?

It’s not that easy to explain the definite causes of the fear of failing. There are some common reasons why we won’t take risks in our lives. These causes can be addressed and used to find solutions for why we are so scared.

Here are a few examples of what causes fear to rule our lives:

1. Lack of confidence

One of the reasons we become so afraid is due to the lack-of-confidence. When someone has a healthy self-confidence, they usually don’t dwell on whether they will succeed or fail. The usually just understand that if they fail, they will handle the situation accordingly.
On the other hand, those with low self-confidence will believe in perfectionism. They think that unless they succeed in the task at hand, they will be a failure. Although they fail, they are not a failure, most of us know that, but, to them, this is just a fact.

2. Perfectionism

Closely related to the lack of confidence is the subject of perfectionism. Those who fear failure often believe that they and the things they are interested in are supposed to be perfect  The truth is, nothing is entirely perfect no matter how hard you try to be successful in your endeavors.
Perfection may actually come from the dysfunction of others where a person was always expected to do things without flaws. Neglect could be causes of perfectionism in tasks today and can cause a lack of confidence. The only way to understand if this is a true cause of fear is to notice the traits of the friends around you.

3. Personalization

Some people see failure as a testament to who they are. When they fail to complete a task in the right way or in perfect timing, they see fault in themselves. These individuals truly do not feel good enough about themselves to attempt a new task or take any risks.
The right way to see failure is to look at the tools used for the project of the job. It’ isn’t always about us when things go south. Sometimes it’s just the circumstance or timing. So taking personal offense to failure is just an unhealthy way of looking at things altogether.

4. The perfectionism of others

Although some of us are victims of perfectionism in our personalities, there are others who impose their perfectionism on us too. Some people expect us to be perfect and so we work hard to meet these expectations. This can happen so much that we do feel that we are doomed to fail.
The perfectionism of others is also born from some deep-seated expectation of others as well. It’s actually like a curse passed down from one person to the next. If you are in an important position in your job, don’t be surprised if your boss expects only the best from you and allows no room for mistakes.

5. Childhood issues

Any sort of abuse can cause a fear of failure. Traumas such as abuse or even neglect can make you feel as if nothing you do, present or in the future, will turn out right. This is why you stay home so much and stay within your comfort zone.
Taking a closer look at childhood issues presents us with patterns. The first incident of abusewas probably shocking to the child, but after a while, it became a normal part of life. As an adult, fear became a normal part of life as well.
Maybe you are always afraid that if you fail, there will be punishments. You even brace yourself for the fail long before you actually know the outcome.

How to overcome your fear of failure?

If you recognize yourself as being afraid of failure, then the next step is to find ways to overcome this problem. You would be amazed by the number of ways you can decrease or eliminate these fears.

Here are a few ways to do this:

1. Keep things simple

Complications can heighten certain fears in life. This is because of disorganization and unhealthy emotions. Keeping things simple is the best way to remove your fear of failure. Simplicity can do many things to clear the mind and create a healthier atmosphere.

2. Be in the present moment

One way to overcome the fear of failure is to just be in the present moment. You must stop dwelling in the past and stop worrying about the future. The past, so many times, has pain and damage.
The future has worries that shouldn’t be worried about yet. So, the fear comes from wondering what will happen and if things will turn out bad. So being in the now is always best.

3. Welcome failure

If you accept failure and even welcome it into your life, you can learn many things. Failures teach us what we shouldn’t do and what we can do that’s better. You just have to learn a different mindset when it comes to this dread of failure.
Slowly look within and find what holds you back. Many times, it’s the simple truth of lack of trust in the world. Trust your abilities to accept failure instead.

Nothing is certain

Remember, if you’re afraid of failing, then you will rarely take chances at anything. Taking chances are what change your life, and it’s not always negative. There have been many instances where taking risks have resulted in great achievements and success.
It starts with practice. You must embrace failure before the failure happens if it will. You must take a look at the roots of your life and situations, understanding the truth about failures. Who taught you the horrible feelings associated with fear?
You must ask questions like these to have the courage to change your life for the better. Facing your fears and stepping out in faith is the bottom line. Dump the fear of failure, and start living a life worth living.

Obsessive thoughts and painful feelings are the curses of depression. One of the most agonizing effects this affliction brings with it is intrusive and unwanted thoughts.
If you are one of the people who suffer from both anxiety and depression, day-to-day life can feel burdensome because of compulsive thoughts. Unwanted intrusive thoughts can cause a great deal of distress. They seem to arise out of nowhere and cause a ton of anxiety.
The content of these unwanted thoughts often focuses on violent or socially unacceptable ideas. People who experience these thoughts are, more often than not, afraid that they would commit the acts they picture in their minds. They also feel that these kinds of thoughts signify something negative and unpleasant about them.
Unwanted thoughts can be very explicit, often making sufferers feel ashamed to admit their presence. This article will help you understand the right approach towards these obsessive thoughts. It will hopefully give you some tips that you can put into practice to deal with them.

Understanding What Obsessive Thoughts Are

Obsessive thinking is a chain of thoughts that are undesirable and invasive for the person. They are typically paired with negative emotions and judgments. More often than not, sufferers experience an inability to exercise any control over these persistent, upsetting thoughts.
The severity of emotions and distraction can range from mild but troublesome, to all-consuming and crippling. These intrusive thoughts can be harsh self-judgments or more serious contemplations such as physically hurting yourself or a loved one.
Obsessive thoughts can affect both your day-to-day functioning and emotional state. When unwanted thoughts first enter our mind, our instinctive reaction is some degree of discomfort, followed by desperate attempts to get rid of the nagging images.
This reaction is completely natural and illustrates the simple human nature: when something is distressing, we avoid it. But obsessive thinking is a different monstrosity altogether that requires conditioned thoughts and the right attitude to handle it.
Even when we try our best to put obsessive thoughts aside, the brain keeps reminding us about the unwanted images and we can’t seem to get rid of them. It is the same fundamental principle – when we are told not to think of something specific, our mind’s response is to do just that.
The secret is being able to understand that thoughts are just fleeting mental images that have no importance by themselves. They cannot impact our lives in any way unless we choose to give them power and influence.

Recognize the Pattern

To stop obsessive thoughts from hounding you, the first step is identifying the thoughts as intrusive. If you’ve had any experience with obsessive thinking at all, you know that this is easier said than done.
We must be able to recognize the recurring patterns in our thoughts. This way, we can have some semblance of control over them. It is quite similar to checking social media or biting nails or tapping feet – it happens unconsciously. If you ever catch yourself caught in this cognitive loop, remind yourself to stop and take a deep breath to come back to the present moment.
Here on out, you can try pinpointing the obsessive thoughts and perhaps writing them down. You can work towards analyzing these thoughts and their patterns to understand what triggers them. This simple activity can help you gauge how you are currently responding to the distressing thoughts.
Once you are focused and can scrutinize your thoughts effectively, try identifying the basic cause of this session of obsessive thoughts in particular. This will guide you towards gaining some perspective.
Seeing the cause of your worries written down in ink might encourage you to see the bigger picture and “get out of your head”. Often we tend to develop harassing thoughts that trap us like a vicious cycle. Actively looking for a way out of this spiral is definitely one of the primary measures you should take.

Accept That Obsessive Thoughts are Predominantly Out of Your Control

The next step to overcoming and conquering obsessive thinking is acceptance. Bear in mind that thoughts are nothing more than a set of neurons firing in the brain. They don’t necessarily mean or indicate anything.

Think of your obsessive thoughts as clouds in the sky.

Most of them just come and go. Some of them may carry something substantial and beneficial like rain. But other times, they may just bump around and create storms. But know that through everything, there is a clear blue sky above it all. There is peace and tranquillity right beyond the cloud cover. All you need to do is wait for the dark clouds to subside. This is when you will have clarity and confidence once again.
If we make frantic attempts to escape or suppress these thoughts, it inadvertently leads to the same thoughts being amplified and strengthened. Acceptance, rather than control, is what you should aim for.
It is important to mention here that acceptance does not mean giving up. Only when you let the thought process run its course, and not be heavily impacted by the presence of these thoughts, can you begin to experience comfort in your own mind.
A certain sense of detachment and the understanding that ‘You are not your thoughts’ can go a long way in your battle against depression or anxiety.

Think of the ‘Why Worry’ flowchart when you feel anxious about a particular task or situation. It goes something like this:

If you have a problem in your life, there are only two possible alternatives. Either you can do something about it, or it is completely out of your hands. Either way, ‘Why Worry?’.
If there is something you can do to address the problem, go full steam ahead and exert yourself. After that, and in the case that there is nothing you can possibly do to improve the situation, rest assured knowing that you have already done the best you could.

Delve Into Meditation and Mindfulness

One of the major reasons that obsessive thinking feels painful and bitter is that it is accompanied by difficult emotions and grievous images.
While you sensibly work towards challenging and naming these ruminations, using meditation and mindfulness techniques can provide you with exceptional support to conquer obsessive thoughts. Cognitively questioning and testing the unwanted thoughts and accepting their presence will surely allow you to find a deeper place of rest and stillness.
In Psychology Today, Psychologist Seth Meyers defines mindfulness as “clearing your head and focusing on how your mind and body feels in the moment.”
To achieve this calm state, mindfulness and meditation offer an array of practices to anchor us in the present moment and remind us to compose our thoughts. It soothes anxiety and alleviates stress or anger.
As soon as you recognize obsessive thoughts in your mind, try deep breathing exercises. Then focus on the sounds, odors, and sensations around you. Engage all your senses for this activity. Try inhaling slowly for a count of four, holding it for a count of four, and exhaling for a count of six.
Bring your attention to all the sounds that float to you, and smell that you might not have noticed. Concentrate on how the floor or chair support your body effortlessly. Feel the weight of your body pressing down and the sensitivity of your skin. These grounding exercises help break the cycle of painful ruminations.
There are a bunch of mediation and mindfulness activities that you can try out. Also, consider taking in-person meditation or yoga classes that have a mindfulness aspect. Learning and focusing in a supportive environment will directly impact your well-being in a positive manner.

If obsessive thoughts have been harassing you for extended periods of time, it can be indicative of serious mental disorders and illnessesObsessive-compulsive disorder, particularly, can cause persistent, intrusive thoughts to result in a great deal of discomfort and agony.

Practicing mindfulness and getting extra help when needed allows us to create the state we need to conquer and thrive through life.
