(TMU) — Bees are major fans of hemp and a recent study has found that the taller the hemp plants are the larger the number of bees that will flock to it.
The new research, spearheaded by researchers at Cornell University and publishedlast month in Environmental Entomology, shows that humans aren’t the only fans of weed. The findings also reinforce a study published last year at Colorado State University that discovered the same thing.
The study shows how bees are highly attracted to cannabis due to the plant’s plentiful stores of pollen, and it could pave the way for scientists to figure out new ways to support their struggling population as well as floral populations.
According to the study, the greater the area covered by the hemp plant the greater the chance that bees will swarm to the area. Additionally, those hemp plants that are taller have a much greater likelihood of attracting bees with the tallest plants attracting a stunning 17 times more bees than the shortest plants.
The study also found that as time went on greater amounts of bees visited the hemp plots on a more frequent basis. It sounds almost like the word-of-mouth effect among humans who hear about great deals at a dispensary, no?
Get the latest from The Mind Unleashed in your inbox. Sign up right here.
The researchers also discovered that hemp, a major cash crop with multiple applications, can support no less than 16 different varieties of bees in the northeastern United States.
The findings may seem strange considering that cannabis doesn’t produce the sweet, sugary nectar that your typical floral varieties produce to attract insects. Nor does hemp flower come in the dazzling array of bright colors that likewise attract bugs. However, the pollen produced by male flowers is highly attractive to the 16 bee subspecies in the study for reasons that remain unknown.
Female flowers—the kind that humans like to smoke for its intoxicating and soothing effects—are basically ignored by bees since they don’t produce any acutal flowers.
The study’s author’s wrote:
The rapid expansion of hemp production in the United States… may have significant implications for agroecosystem-wide pollination dynamics.
As a late-season crop flowering during a period of seasonal floral dearth, hemp may have a particularly strong potential to enhance pollinator populations and subsequent pollination services for crops in the following year by filling gaps in late-season resource scarcity.
What makes the findings so compelling is the crucial impact it could have on suffering bee populations across the United States.
Bee are perhaps one of the most important managed pollinators in U.S. agriculture. Spreading the male sex cells of flowers to their female counterparts in a natural process that is highly crucial to plant reproduction.
According to the UN Food and Agricultural Organization, pollinators are worth anywhere from $235 and $577 billion worldwide owing to their pivotal role in the production of global crops. In the U.S. alone this means that bees are responsible for $20 billion of domestic crop production. Without bees we can kiss almonds, blueberries, watermelon, and other crops goodbye.
The authors of the study made clear that the combination of bees plus hemp won’t mean that folks should worry about cannabinoid-rich pollen sneaking it into their diets nor will the bees start producing honey enriched with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)—as nice as that sounds.
Likewise, the presence of cannabinoids like THC in hemp pollen is “not likely to have an impact on bee development due to the loss of cannabinoid receptors in insects.
So while we often like to focus on the recreational or medicinal use of marijuana—in its edible, smokeable, and vape-able forms—this new research shows that the plant can in fact help nature and agriculture in amazingly important ways.

Congress Will Vote This Week to Legalize Marijuana Nationwide and End Prohibition

THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED IN THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY!

By Elias MaratThe Mind Unleashed

Posted November 19, 2019 by Wes Annac.

.

(TMU) — A bill that could see marijuana comprehensively legalized on a federal level has been scheduled for a vote on Wednesday or shortly thereafter, marking the first-ever vote to put an end to federal cannabis prohibition.

On Monday, the House Judiciary Committee posted a marked-up version of HR 3884—or the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment, and Expungement (MORE) Act—reports Forbes.

The legislation, introduced by Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) and sponsored by Rep. Kamala Harris (D-CA) as S.2227, enjoys bipartisan support and would lead to the removal of cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act, ending prohibition on a federal level and allowing states to move forward with their own policies regulating the commerce and consumption of the plant.

The text of HR3884 lays out the purpose of the proposed law, which would be to “decriminalize and de-schedule cannabis, to provide for reinvestment in certain persons adversely impacted by the War on Drugs, to provide for expungement of certain cannabis offenses, and for other purposes.”

Cannabis legal reform advocates have hailed the scheduled vote as a key step toward advancing justice for those affected by the failed “War on Drugs,” which has for decades fueled over-policing and mass incarceration, ripping apart the social fabric for poor communities and people of color across the United States.

H.R. 5038, the “Farm Workforce Modernization Act of 2019”; H.R. 3884, the “Marijuana Opportunity...

In a blog post, Erik Altieri, the executive director of the National Organization to Reform Marijuana Laws (NORML), wrote:

“This has never happened in the history of our country and it is thanks to all the time and effort folks have put in for DECADES. The MORE Act isn’t just some half measure either. It contains many of the important reforms we have always wanted to see at the federal level.

Not only will it remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act entirely, but it will also require federal courts to expunge prior marijuana-related convictions, provide grants and funding to communities most harmed by our failed war on cannabis consumers, and finally allow physicians affiliated with the Veterans Administration to recommend medical cannabis to veterans.”

The removal of cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act as a Schedule I narcotic would mean that the plant would no longer be defined by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as a drug “with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse” in league with LSD and heroin.

The act also includes a number of provisions that would seek to undo the historical damage wrought by the failed “War on Drugs,” including injecting grants and funding into those communities which faced the most damage from the prohibitionist campaign.

States would also be incentivized to expunge the criminal records of low-level cannabis offenders, removing a barrier that often bars access to employment and housing. The legislation would also provide for re-sentencing and block federal agencies from denying public benefits and security clearances over past cannabis convictions, while immigrants would no longer be denied citizenship over marijuana.

The Small Business Administration would also support entrepreneurs and businesses who are trying to gain a foothold in the fast-emerging and profitable legal cannabis industry.

In a press release, Rep. Nadler called on Congress to pass the bill. He said:

“Our marijuana laws disproportionately harm individuals and communities of color, leading to convictions that damage job prospects, access to housing, and the ability to vote.

Recognizing this, many states have legalized marijuana. It’s now time for us to remove the criminal prohibitions against marijuana at the federal level. That’s why I introduced the MORE Act, legislation which would assist communities disproportionately impacted by the enforcement of these laws.”

For too long, our marijuana laws have disproportionately harmed individuals and communities of color. As more states legalize marijuana, it is time for Congress to decriminalize it.

California Returns Sacred Island to the Tribe It Was Stolen From in 1860 Massacre

Native Americans.

By Elias MaratThe Mind Unleashed

Posted November 7, 2019 by Wes Annac.

.

“NOTHING WE SAY OR DO CAN MAKE UP FOR WHAT OCCURRED ON THAT NIGHT OF INFAMY. IT WILL FOREVER BE A SCAR ON OUR HISTORY,” A FORMER MAYOR SAID.

(TMU) — Like the rest of the United States, for thousands of years present-day California was home to the Native American peoples. And as was the case across the country, in California around 16,000 indigenous Natives were wiped out through a combination of discriminatory laws and attacks by federal authorities, state officials, and local militias that executed the genocide of the state’s original inhabitants.

However, an island off the coast of California is finally being returned to the small Wiyot Tribe after an unprecedented formal transfer of the land to the group by the City of Eureka in Northern California.

Known for decades as “Indian Island” and originally known as Duluwat Island, it was once the spiritual and physical center of the Wiyot nation before being purchased by a dairy farmer without their consent in 1860. Days later, Eureka residents massacred an untold number of Wiyot, including women and children.

The land, which included the sacred Tuluwat village, then became plagued by invasive species and contaminated by a ship yard.

But now, the island will belong to the Wiyot people in its entirety after the city transferred all city deeds to the tribe.

In an emotional ceremony late last month, Eureka Mayor Susan Seaman finalized the formal transfer to the Wiyot people of the largest island in Humboldt Bay.

Tribal chairman Ted Hernandez held back tears as he thanked friends and family for urging him not to give up on regaining the land, even when prospects of its return seemed slim. He commented:

“Today is a good day to be alive.”

Cutcha Risling Baldy, an assistant professor of Native American studies at Humboldt State University, explained:

“We never gave up on our land or where we came from.

And that’s the story I want people to know.

I know that the story of Tuluwat, which people often refer to as Indian Island, is one of a massacre for most people. But for me, it has always been a place of world renewal.”

For countless generations, Wiyot people had conducted the annual World Renewal Ceremony at Tuluway Village. That same ceremony was happening when the invading settlers at Eureka massacred innocent Wiyot families, and the next ritual ceremony was only held again in 2014 when elders revived the tradition, which symbolized the healing of the Earth.

Former mayor Frank Jäger signed a formal apology for the massacre at the time. An earlier and much stronger draft of the letter, which wasn’t approved by the council, was read aloud during the transfer.

In the apology, Jäger wrote:

“Nothing we say or do can make up for what occurred on that night of infamy. It will forever be a scar on our history.

We can, however, with our present and future actions of support for the Wiyot, work to remove the prejudice and bigotry that still exists in our society today.”

The attempt at offering some restitution to Native Californians comes months after Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order in June that apologized for the “violence, maltreatment and neglect” the state’s original peoples suffered at the hands of authorities and white settler-colonizers.

In 1851, California’s first executive, Governor Peter Burnett, urged lawmakers to prepare for “a war of extermination” that would continue “until the Indian race becomes extinct.”

Offering an apology at the site of the future California Indian Heritage Center in West Sacramento, Newsom said:

“California must reckon with our dark history.

We can never undo the wrongs inflicted on the peoples who have lived on this land that we now call California since time immemorial, but we can work together to build bridges, tell the truth about our past and begin to heal deep wounds.”

The governor also pledged to establish a “truth and healing council” to provide Native peoples’ perspectives on the historical record. Newsom added:

“It’s called a genocide. That’s what it was. A genocide. [There’s] no other way to describe it and that’s the way it needs to be described in the history books.

And so I’m here to say the following: I’m sorry on behalf of the state of California.”

A year ago, Hernandez hailed the expected transfer as “a step in the right

in an interview with the Times-Standard.
Hernandez added:
“It’s closure.
Our ancestors will be at rest and at peace, and the ceremonies will be able to continue.”

California Bars Animals from Circuses, Becomes First State to Ban Fur Trade

Animal Rights Win.

By Elias MaratThe Mind Unleashed

Posted November 4, 2019 by Edward Morgan.

.

California has become the third state to bar most animals from circus performances under a new bill signed over the weekend by Governor Gavin Newsom.
A separate bill signed by the governor is the first of its kind in the nation, banning the sale and manufacture of new fur products. The law, which will kick into effect in 2023, follows Newsom’s signing of legislation that outlaws fur trapping.
In a statement, Newsom said:
“California is a leader when it comes to animal welfare and today that leadership includes banning the sale of fur.
“But we are doing more than that. We are making a statement to the world that beautiful wild animals like bears and tigers have no place on trapeze wires or jumping through flames.
“Just YouTube the videos showing the cruel way these animals—often stripped from their mothers as babies—are trained to do dangerous tricks. It’s deeply disturbing.”
In December, New Jersey and Hawaii both became the first states in the U.S. to issue legislation banning the use of circus animals, which campaigners have denounced as a systematized form of animal cruelty. The new measures ban all wild animal species including elephants, bears, tigers, lions, bears, and primates from circuses and traveling shows.
The law will exempt domesticated dogs, cats and horses and does not apply to rodeos.
Circuses have faced a major decline in popularity in recent decades. The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus permanently dismantled its tents in 2017 after touring the country for 146 years.

The bill was hailed by both animal rights activists and legislators. State senator Ben Hueso, a co-author of the circus bill, said:
“This is a historic day for California, as we join the growing number of states and localities stepping up to implement similar bans on cruel circuses.
“I’m very proud of the work we’ve accomplished to close the curtain on circuses in our state that exploit these beautiful creatures.”
Animal rights group People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) thanked their 8,000 supporters for pressuring representatives to support the ban. In a statement quoted by Newsweek, the group said:
“This is a victory years in the making, one that wouldn’t have been possible without our supporters and activists everywhere.”
The fur ban will not apply to products used for religious or tribal purposes. The sale of leather, dog and cat fur, cowhides, deer, sheep and goat skin – as well as any other skin preserved through taxidermy – will also still be allowed.
Animal rights groups accuse the fashion industry and fur trade of subjecting animals to a range of inhumane actions to obtain the fur, including gassing and electrocuting animals.
Cassie King of the Berkeley-based animal rights group Direct Action Everywhere told Associated Press that it is confident that California’s law could set in motion similar bans in other states.
Over 40 countries around the world, with roughly half of them in Europe, have either totally banned or heavily restricted the use of wild animals for entertainment purposes in venues such a circuses or zoos.
Cassie King, an organizer with the group, said:
“Ordinary people want to see animals protected, not abused.”
The fur industry – which relies on products from chinchillas, rabbits, mink, and other animals – could face significant damage from the groundbreaking ban in the nation’s most populous state.

@oliviamunn 🎉 WE DID IT 🎉 California just passed the first-ever statewide ban on fur! The new law will save thousands of rabbits, foxes, & other animals killed for fur 🦊🙌🐇 #AB44

Thank YOU for being a part of this incredible victory for animals ❤️

Industry voices who oppose the law claim that a black market could be created by the ban, which they have also tried to depict as a slippery slope to banning other products.
Opponents of the legislation have said it could create a black market and be a slippery slope to bans on other products.

In a press release, Fur Information Council of America spokesman Keith Kaplan breathlessly accused the governor of backing a totalitarian so-called “vegan agenda.” Blasting the bill, the industry spokesman promised that the industry would sue the state and added:
“Chalk this up as a victory for a radical vegan agenda using fur as the first step to other bans on what we wear and eat.
“In the end, there will be no positive impact on animal welfare.

Pediatricians Release Migrant Children’s Drawings of Their Time Spent in US Border Prisons

Pediatricians Release Migrant Children’s Drawings of Their Time Spent in US Border Prisons.

By Elias MaratThe Mind Unleashed.

July 4th, 2019

THE DISTURBING IMAGES WERE DRAWN BY MIGRANT CHILDREN SEPARATED FROM THEIR PARENTS WHILE IN US CUSTODY.

(TMU) — Pediatricians have shared harrowing images drawn by migrant children separated from their parents while in U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) detention camps that show people in prison-like conditions.
The drawings were released by a social worker at the Catholic Charities Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen, Texas to the American Academy of Pediatrics, who released them on Wednesday to U.S. media outlets. The shelter is the first place where many families can take their first shower, receive a clean change of clothes and a hot meal after their arduous trek across the border.

One drawing was by an 11-year-old boy from Guatemala, another was by a 10-year-old from Guatemala, and the third was by a different 10-year-old whose national origin is unknown.
Dr. Sara Goza, the incoming president of the academy who toured the CBP camps last week told NBC News that the images reveal the dire and inhumane conditions in which the children are being confined. She explained:
“Children do not belong in Customs and Border Protection facilities, or in any detention facilities.
No amount of time spent in these facilities is safe for children.
More children will continue to die if we do not make sure that every child who passes through federal custody is seen by a pediatric-trained medical professional.
I personally toured two CBP facilities and did not encounter a single pediatrician at either one.”

The past president of the AAP, Dr. Colleen Kraft, corroborated Goza’s observations to CNN, explaining:
“The fact that the drawings are so realistic and horrific gives us a view into what these children have experienced.
When a child draws this, it’s telling us that child felt like he or she was in jail.”
Noting that pediatricians are eager to assist the children, Kraft added:
“We have pediatricians who would volunteer to go to the border tomorrow and work with these children and advise medical personnel and train them.
That’s still our ask, but it’s gotten nowhere.”
The group had initially held a series of meetings with CBP leadership after urging the agency to place child heath care professionals at the border to train CBP medical personnel. According to Kraft, the meetings came to an end after the federal agency failed to follow through with AAP recommendations.
Goza was appalled during her tour of two border facilities by the fact that she “did not encounter a single pediatrician” at either one. During her visit to the CBP Central Processing Center in McAllen known as Ursula, Goza explained:
“The first thing that hit me when we walked in the door was the smell … the smell of sweat, urine and feces.
And I heard crinkling to my left and I looked over there and it was a sea of silver … there were young children, boys in there. Unaccompanied boys in there.”
The doctor described a room filled with children between 10 and 12 years old that was silent beside the rustling of mylar blankets, “and they had no expression on their faces, there was no laughing, there was no joking, no talking.”
“They were quiet, and just staring, blankly … There were just blank stares and no expressions on their faces.
I describe them almost like dog cages with people in each of them … And the silence was just hard to watch, hard to see.”

border-prison-drawing

In his characteristically callous fashion, President Donald Trump tweeted Wednesday that CBP personnel are “not hospital workers, doctors or nurses,” adding in a separate tweet that if the migrants, asylum-seekers and refugees—whom he referred to pejoratively as “illegal aliens”—“are unhappy with the conditions in the quickly built or refitted detentions centers, just tell them not to come … All problems solved!”

Our Border Patrol people are not hospital workers, doctors or nurses. The Democrats bad Immigration Laws, which could be easily fixed, are the problem. Great job by Border Patrol, above and beyond. Many of these illegals aliens are living far better now than where they.....

Dr. Carlos Gutierrez of the nonprofit Annunciation House in El Paso explained that migrants who are taken into U.S. custody regularly have their medications seized. “It’s just not right. That’s not the way to practice good medicine,” he said.
Gutierrez also noted that contact between “whoever is providing the medical care” in the camps and “us on the outside” is prohibited. He added:
“That is not medical care. That’s malpractice … It’s very upsetting and I hope to God that this changes quickly.”
Kraft explained:
“CBP agents are police. They’re law enforcement. They have an important job to do, but they’re not trained to take care of children.”
Another pediatrician who visited the McAllen CBP warehouse, Dr. Dolly Sevier, evaluated dozens of children who had fallen ill at the Ursula facility, which she also said smelled like body odor and soiled clothing.

border-prison-illustration

Sevier, who believes that the role of the pediatrician should include “being the voice for the kid, the advocate,” saw evidence across the facility of widespread infection, malnutrition, dehydration, sleep deprivation and psychological trauma among the imprisoned children. She said that two-thirds of the children she examined had clear symptoms of respiratory infection.
Sevier spent much of her day at the South Texas facility demanding to see a three-year-old girl, but a guard made excuses as to why he could not produce “the body,” as he referred to the child.
In an informative article about the visit published by Atlantic Magazine, journalist Jeremy Raff explained:
“At 5:53, the guard with the surgical mask brought in the 3-year-old Sevier had requested to see, holding her by the armpits, like a puppy. Thin and subdued, the girl was crying but didn’t turn away. ‘Underweight, fearful child in no acute distress,’ Sevier wrote. ‘Only concern is severe trauma being suffered from being removed from primary caregiver.’
After the exam, the child lingered, and Sevier offered to hold her. She climbed into the doctor’s lap and fell asleep in less than a minute. The squalor, the lighting, the agents, and the event that evening fell away from Sevier’s consciousness. As if in rebellion against her careful training, her mind shut down, she told me. And for what seemed like an eternity, she sat in vacant silence with the child.”
