What wouldn’t you give to travel without limits on any plane of existence? To feel your Soul become one with the universe? To be a shining beacon of Light? Soul travel requires only focus, high vibration frequencies and intentionality. With the right tools and techniques, you can live in a world with no borders and no limits.
 
What Is Soul Travel?
 
Let’s start with what it’s not. Soul Travel is often confused with Astral Projection, but the two are in fact very different. Astral Projection revolves around our Subtle Body, also called Astral Body or Energy Body. This is the vibrational refined refraction of our physical body, which connects the mind and the spirit.
 
In Astral Projection, the Subtle Body leaves the physical body and travels through the Astral Plane. However, you remain consciously and detachedly aware of your physical body. This can be achieved through lucid dreaming, mediation or even accidentally.
 
In Soul Travel, you travel with your Light Body. This body is more extensive than the Astral Body. It shines through it to encompass the Astral Body. As such, it is reached by attaining and maintaining a state of complete, unconditional Love.
 
By raising our vibrations through this state of Love, the Light Body reaches its highest refraction, the Rainbow Body. Now we find ourselves on the same frequency as the Source, the Universe, the Cosmos, the Creation. When we are open to Love, we can be anything and go anywhere.
 
In Soul Travel, we are not aware of our physical bodies, having reached the highest vibrations of ourselves. Being on the same frequency as the Source connects us with everything in the Universe, beyond time and place.
 
On this frequency, we are in all worlds and dimensions at once, so we don’t actually travel anywhere. We are already there and everywhere. As such, there is no need to be afraid of getting lost as we do not physically leave our bodies.
 
Some people do report a whooshing sound or a feeling of high speed when they Soul Travel. This is most likely the sensation resulting from two things:
  • Our Soul negotiating fixed states and conditions
  • Time and space adjusting to the Soul’s state of consciousness
  • Why It Is Important
 
The vital element of Soul Travel is understanding that, on this level, we work to uplift humanity. By fusing with the Source, we are empowered to take more responsibility for ourselves at all levels. Likewise, to use our natural gifts and abilities to raise the Earth’s vibration. We will often be guided via suggestion or intuition to where we need to be.
 
When Soul Travelling consciously or through meditation, we know we are where we need to be. In light of this, ask yourself and the Universe the following question when you arrive: Is there anything I need to heal, complete, receive or resolve here? Lean into Love, and you’ll know the answers.
 
How Can I Soul Travel?
 
The crucial element of Soul Travel is to know where you want to go. As you merge with the Source’s vibration frequency, focus on your destination to manifest it around you.
 
But how do you merge with the Source’s vibration frequency? As previously discussed, this is a path of Love. Only by embodying complete, unconditional Love on all levels can we raise our vibrations enough to become One.
 
There are a variety of techniques to achieve Soul Travel, each suited to different individuals and different personalities. Play around and experiment with them. Get creative with how you apply them to yourself. Most importantly, remain comfortable and avoid tension and struggle in your journey to Soul Travel.
 
Most techniques are based on visualisations and meditations. This is because intentionality and purpose are vital to Soul Travel. The aim is to fill yourself with such Love that it cannot be contained in your physical body.
 
4 Safe Methods and Techniques to Induce Soul Travel
 
Guiding Light
 
The Guiding Light is one such visualisation. Imagine yourself vibrating with so much Love, at such a high frequency, that you generate a warm, golden light, emanating from your Crown Chakra.
 
Visualise it passing down through your Chakras to your Root Chakra, activating and lighting them each in turn. Bring it back up through your Chakras. This time sparking such Love that they each start vibrating, then spinning.
 
As they continue spinning, the Love grows, and their Light shines further and further out until they become one Chakra of Light. Unconditional love continues to fuel this Light Chakra. As a result, it grows outwards, through all your bodies, towards the Source, which is everywhere. The culmination of its journey is your ecstasy.
 
Two Pyramids
 
Another visualisation method is the Two Pyramids. See yourself sitting inside a glowing, white pyramid. The base is resting on your hips and the tip projecting upwards. Add another pyramid, with the base at your heart and the tip pointing down into the Earth. Maintain this visualisation for a few normal breaths. When the sensation is stable and tangible, exhale powerfully from your stomach.
 
Then visualise a golden orb growing to encircle both pyramids. Exhale into this field around you, and maintain it steadily with all your senses. When you can sense all three elements without strain, set them spinning clockwise, first the pyramids, then the orb. Breathe with the physical sensations and the increasing frequency. Guide this Love to all the internal spaces that need healing and affirmation, and to others in your life.
 
Spiritual Eye
 
A more focused visualisation involves the Spiritual Eye. Close your eyes and focus your intention on your Third Eye, between your eyebrows. Whether through vocalisation, breathwork or meditation, let Love fill your mind, body and heart.
 
Now visualise your spiritual Guide in your Third Eye. Vocalise the following intention: I give you permission to take me to the best place for my spiritual good.
 
Use the same technique as you used to channel Love to visualise yourself somewhere familiar. Practice regularly and frequently. Consequently, you’ll find yourself in your mental picture, or somewhere else entirely!
 
Daily Practice
 
It’s a good idea to practice specific mental exercises throughout the day. As a result, you’ll build up an awareness of the different planes and of your movement through them.
 
One good practice is to regularly ask yourself if you are dreaming and check for indications of reality. Eventually, you’ll ask yourself this question in dreams as well. In fact, the minute you become aware that you are dreaming you enter a lucid dream state. This is a feature of the Astral Body and a stepping stone to the Light Body.
 
Another way to practice moving through planes is to regularly visualise a scene from your past. However, change some detail of the movement. If the wind was blowing, make the weather still. If people were sitting, make them run.
 
Final Thoughts
 
Keep practising, in tandem with meditations, visualisations and remembering to keep your vibrations high. With any luck, you’ll eventually find yourself somewhere else!

Sharks. Denizens of the deep. Fearsome predators. Sharks have a negative association in real life. Just two bars of music from Jaws conjures up the image of that terrifying mouth of razor-sharp teeth rising from the ocean. So what do dreams about sharks mean?
 
Does the presence of a shark in your dream indicate a threat in real life? Is it, therefore, a warning to be careful? But we often swim with sharks so it is a signal to be more daring? Let’s first look at what sharks in dreams represent. Then we can interpret various scenarios.
 
Dreams about Sharks
 
What Emotions Do Sharks Represent?
 
Sharks are associated with several emotions:
  • Fear
  • Coldness
  • Ruthlessness
  • Fear
 
The obvious emotion is fear. Sharks are predators. They are at the top of the food chain. Sharks are masters of the kill. As such, there is nothing that can kill a shark. The thing about a dream with sharks is that they feel so frightening. When we think about sharks in real life we picture that ominous black tail fin, gliding through the sea. It is waiting for the opportune moment to strike.
 
Likewise, we think of those distinctive rows of pointed teeth, sticking out from a yawning mouth. So dreams about sharks are nearly always associated with fear or the threat of something.
 
Coldness
 
Sharks are also known for being cold. Those cold, blank, dead eyes are emotionless. Even during a bloody feeding frenzy. They remain impassive and detached. Sharks are a bit like the Terminator. You cannot reason with them. And they absolutely will not stop, until you are dead.
 
Ruthlessness
 
Like the Terminator analogy, sharks are savage, ruthless killers. They will pursue their prey for miles to get a kill. Or they will wait patiently for the opportune moment. But whatever happens, they’ll never give up.
 
Now we have a basic understanding about dreams with sharks, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of what they actually mean.
 
Animals in dreams have particular importance. As a result, we need to examine them carefully. Sometimes the animal represents you, the dreamer. Other times it can be a symbol of family or friends. The type of animal is obviously, very important.
 
Sharks as People in Your Lives

Water, particularly underwater, is associated with our subconscious. Therefore, it stands to reason that dreams about fish or creatures, such as sharks, that live underwater also relate to deeply-entrenched thoughts and emotions.
 
However, dreaming about a shark doesn’t necessarily mean you are a cold, ruthless person. In actual fact, it could signify that you have unresolved issues or fears that you’ve pushed down. Consequently, these are now resurfacing and need dealing with.
 
In contrast, consider the scenario where people swim with sharks as a personal challenge. Your subconscious mind is connecting the shark with something you are afraid of and asking you to face it.
 
As sharks have a pretty negative association, a dream about one could also indicate a negative part of your identity. None of us likes to admit we may have character flaws. Therefore, it’s likely that we’ve either buried them or haven’t acknowledged them. Your dream is prodding you. It’s saying that you need to recognise that you are not perfect.
 
For instance, you might have anger issues, a bad temper, or act in a coercive-controlling way with a partner. Either way, the shark in your dream is all about getting you to be more enlightened about yourself.

This draining feeling can either be in an emotional or financial way. But whichever way it is, the person who is represented by the shark in your dream is after something that you have. Furthermore, they don’t care who it upsets or affects.

You saw a shark: This is a symbol of your own ruthlessness, greed and cold-blooded nature in real life.
 
You saw a shark fin: A fin of a shark is a warning in a dream as it is in real life. Be careful, there are difficult times ahead.
 
The shark was in a pool or aquarium: You have strong sexual desires that are not being fulfilled right now. Time to accept who you are.
 
You were a shark: You have the qualities of a shark, i.e. you are ruthless and tend to get what you want. This dream is suggesting that you could be more sensitive.
 
You came across a dead shark: You’ll overcome any enemies and outwit those who try to deceive you.
 
You killed a shark: It is time to end a bad relationship. You have the control.
 
You caught a shark: Face up to a difficult problem quickly and you will overcome it.
 
A shark attacked you: This is not a good omen, it signifies an accident-prone period or a time of ill-health.
 
The shark bit your leg off: You should think very carefully before making major decisions.
 
The shark bit off your hand or arm: Be watchful of your colleagues, they may not have your best interests at heart.
 
The shark swallowed your whole body: You feel powerless in real life. You need to think laterally to solve the problems.
 
You fought the shark and survived: You will need to fight in real life but you will succeed.
 
You ate a shark: You have a lot of negative emotions and aggression inside. Time to get help so you can release them in a healthy manner.
 
Final Thoughts
 
Dreams about sharks can feel terrifying at the time. But they can also reveal a huge amount of information. So, take your time, think about the dream and use it to move forward in your life.

We’ve all heard of Déjá Vu, meaning to have already seen, but déjá rêvè is an interesting phenomenon meaning already dreamed.
 
How Is Déjá Rêvè Different to Déjá Vu?
 
Déjá vu is a common phenomenon in which we think we have already lived a certain event. Usually, we experience déjá vu in situations we should have no familiarity with. This makes the feeling all the more bizarre because we know an experience entirely new to us.
 
 
Déjá vu is very common and has been said to regularly occur in 60-80% of all people. This can mean simple similarities, or it can be a play by play of the same moment. It can be smells, events, locations, and many other things.
 
Many researchers believe that déjá vu is a memory-based experience and assume that it is an associative phenomenon between what we experience at the moment and what we have experienced in the past.
 
Others believe there is a split-second delay between the transferal of into from one side of the brain to the other, meaning it is effectively processed twice. This causes the effect of experiencing something twice.
 
The random nature of déjá vu makes it difficult to study empirically. Much of the research is reliant on self-certification and individual testimony. Therefore, it cannot be induced or exposed to understand it fully.
 
Déjá Rêvè Means ‘Already Dreamed’
 
Déjá rêvè, on the other hand, is even more bizarre of an experience. It causes us to believe that we have already dreamed that we would be in a real-life situation, or that you somehow knew you were going to be in that situation.
 
The temporal scope of this phenomenon is endless. You may have had a recent dream, or even a dream years ago that you were going to be in a situation you then experience. However, in all cases of déjá rêvè, the subject believes they have somehow prophesized an event that happens.
 
What separates déjá rêvè from déjá vu is that the former feels inextricably linked to dreams. The latter, on the other hand, is a much more definitive feeling that experience has already been lived. Déjá vu makes us believe we have lived something before and are simply repeating the same experience.
 
Déjá rêvè is more of a premonition; a feeling that we dreamt this was going to happen or somehow envisaged the future. It is not simply repeating the same experience but predicting a new one.
 
Three Kinds of Déjá Rêvè
 
What is interesting about this phenomenon is that there are three different ways in which people experience it. Each way is unique, making déjá rêvè much more complex than déjá vu.
 
The first is in an episodic manner. Some believe that they can pinpoint the exact moment they had a prophetic dream that something was going to happen. These episodes feel much more like a prophecy, or the ability to see into the future.
 
The second is a familiarity-based manner. This is a hazy, dream-like memory that echoes current circumstances. This kind is easy to mix up with déjá vu because it is simply the experience of already seeing something.
 
The final kind is in a dream-like manner. This kind isn’t so much recalling a dream as much as feeling the experience itself was dream-like. This can be a strange and even nightmarish experience, almost like lucid dreaming except the subject knows they are awake.
Déjá Rêvè in Literature
 
Déjá rêvè has been a subject of much interest, legend and myth. In Greek mythology, Croesus, the Lydian King dreams that his son will die from a spear wound which happens later in the story.
 
In Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, Caesar’s wife has a prophetic dream which accurately depicts his death, which happens the very same day. Even in modern literature, such as Harry Potter, prophetic dreams have a key role to play.
 
Who Suffers from This Phenomenon?
 
Research on déjá rêvè is not as extensive as déjá vu. However, it is highly common in epileptic patients as a common side effect of different kinds of therapies. These therapies include electro-therapy which induces activity in the brain. Subjects with epilepsy then report déjá rêvè as a side effect to their seizures.
 
However, it can also occur in perfectly healthy subjects. Yet, scientists have not found its cause in healthy patients.
 
Final Thoughts
 
We know enough about the human brain to know that there is still a lot we don’t know about the human brain. We have learned much in the past 50 years through new technologies, such as CT and MRI scanning.
 
Yet, there is still so much that we don’t know. We are still finding new types of neurons, particles with magnetic potential, and even a virus that could explain human consciousness.
 
All in all, the brain is still very much a mystery. It may take us a long time to figure out how and why the brain tricks us with experiences such as déjá vu and déjá rêvè. Yet, it is interesting to observe them when they happen, and even learn from them when they do.
 
Who knows, perhaps your prophetic dreams are trying to tell you something.

Dreaming about an ex can be unsettling, particularly for those in abusive relationships. But can they offer insight into our daily lives?
You might wonder how a dream about an ex-partner can shed light on what’s happening in our day-to-day life. For example, what does it mean for those who are in happy relationships? On the other hand, what about people that are single? How is dreaming about a past ex-partner relevant to our present?
Well, you could argue that we all made up of our past experiences. The things that happened to us when we were younger have shaped us into the people we are today. But clearly, if we are dreaming about an ex-partner, then something is not quite right. But what exactly?

Why do we dream?

Freud believed that dreams are a window into the subconscious mindHe argued that we all have hidden desires, wishes and thoughts that we feel ashamed to voice out loud. As a result, we bury all these hidden desires and they fester in the subconscious. Dreams allow us to process these desires in a healthy manner.
Every dream is unique to us. It is packed full of our own experiences and emotions. Each dream contains symbols and clues that give us hints as to what our subconscious mind is trying to tell us.
There are some would argue that the fact we are dreaming about an ex is irrelevant. However, our subconscious mind has chosen an ex-partner because it believes this is the perfect way to tell us about a particular problem that needs attention.

1. Unresolved issues

 
I often dream about a certain ex-partner and I believe this is because of unresolved issues between myself and my ex. We were together for ten years and broke up over 18 years ago. However, of all my ex-partners, he is the one I dream about the most.
He was a very controlling person who was jealous all the time. I was a flirtatious person who was probably not the best match for him. The relationship ended very badly.
When I’m dreaming about my ex, I am living in his house and he is not there, but I know he will come back at any time. I think this represents the fear and anxiety I used to feel in our relationship when he would look around for things I had done wrong so he could punish me.
If you are dreaming about your ex, consider whether you have unresolved issues as well. Was the break-up difficult? Do you feel cheated because you didn’t get your share of the house or other possessions?

2. Symbolic of other problems

 
Dreams are symbolic. Many people worry that because they have dreamt of an ex they subconsciously want them back, but that’s not the case. Exes are exes for a reason. Whether it was your decision to break up or not.
Think about why the relationship ended. Was it you that finished it and why? Do you regret it? What could you have done differently if you do regret it?
Even if you didn’t end it, think about how you can prevent the same thing from happening in the future. If your dream about your ex is recurring, then understanding why your relationship ended and what you can do in the future may put a stop to these ongoing dreams.

3. You are missing a part of your life with the ex

 
Our partners are so much more than that person. They are a lifestyle, a circle of friends, an extended family, even an income bracket.
When I split up with my ex, I found out very quickly that surviving on a civil servant salary was a huge change compared to a joint income with my ex. I went from living in a four-bedroomed house in a lovely little village to renting one room in a shared house in the city centre.
Now, my situation is different and I’m very happy, and yet I still dream of my ex. Perhaps I am resentful that he still owns that lovely house in the village? I hope not. But it’s something to be aware of.
Remember, dreaming about an ex doesn’t mean you are missing your ex, it could be the house you lived in, the area, the mutual friends you had, or all the things you did together.

4. Your ex represents a part of you

 
There is a theory that your ex represents a part of you that you might be neglecting. For example, if your ex-partner was particularly loving and you are in a relationship at present, consider your behaviour with your current partner.
Are you being as warm and as caring as you should be? Could your dream about your ex be a wake-up call about your current relationship?
The best way to analyse this dream is to look at your ex-partner’s best or worst qualities and see whether you are either replicating them or you need to pay attention to the ones you are lacking.

4. A chance to forgive

 
In life, we don’t always get the opportunity for closure. People can walk away without giving explanations about their behaviour. Or, they can act inappropriately without facing the consequences.
It can leave us with unfinished business. We can’t move on. However, our dreams allow us to process these unresolved issues.
In our dreams, it doesn’t matter whether your ex feels sorry for causing you upset and pain. You have the to power to forgive and make peace with the situation.
In fact, if you keep having dreams about your ex, forgiving them while you are awake might stop you dreaming about them when you’re asleep. Only then will you be able to move on.

6. There is something lacking in your current partner

 
If the dream about your ex was your first love and you are in a relationship, this is a sign that you feel something is missing in your current relationship.
Our first love reminds us of passion, our youth, and the excitement of being in love for the first time. Therefore, if you are dreaming of your first ex-partner, it is your subconscious nudging you to regain these feelings with your present partner.
Dreaming about an ex has all kinds of meanings and interpretations. The main point to remember is that it doesn’t have to mean you still have feelings for an ex-partner.
If you keep dreaming about an ex, it’s more likely that your subconscious is using this to tell you about an issue that needs resolving right now.

I have two strange passions: I love words (hence my love for writing) and I love learning about different life philosophies. When browsing the bookstore a few months back, I saw a book titled “Ikigai: how the Japanese wake up to joy and purpose every day.” A perfect match for someone like me — ikigai was both a word and new “life philosophy” I’d never heard before. Of course, it caught my attention.
 
We’re told that attaining certain external things such as a good degree and a bottomless bank account is the path to true success. Our innate search for happiness leads us to strive endlessly for that degree, that relationship, that outside recognition and validation.

Because I’m what you might call a “free spirit” as opposed to a “follow the beaten path” kind of girl, living in a society that pushes a certain life direction—multiple degrees, big jobs, etc—has left me feeling like my life isn’t much of a contribution. I would much rather learn and master the concepts of inner peace, authentic connection, self-acceptance, fear.
This conflict of not living according to the world’s standards robbed me of my own inner peace, even though in my heart of hearts, I knew I was meant for a different path. I felt the discomfort of not fitting the mold; I felt out of harmony because I so badly wanted to conform to a world that was beating to a different rhythm from my own heart.

So what does this have to do with ikigai?

The word itself means “reason for being.” Each and every one of us finds fulfillment and joy in different ways. Part of the magic and beauty of life is finding what sparks joy in your life. There are four pillars that you must address in order to embody ikigai:
  1. Find something that you love (for example, what makes time fly by for you?)
  2. Have some meaningful contribution to the world (do you feel your work has a meaningful impact on others?)
  3. Do something that you can get paid for (this is self-explanatory. Everyone needs food on the table!)
  4. Find something you’re good at (it doesn’t have to be an inherent gift you have, but something you’re able and willing to work towards excelling in.)
We readily take out loans and get into school debt because we think having a certain degree will give us job security. Yet, we rarely follow our intuition with the same confidence and faith. When you think of it that way, pursuing what really sets you on fire doesn’t seem as “impractical.”
The question is, are you willing to try new things, take risks, and get outside your comfort zone? Regardless of where you’re at in life, living out a life that both challenges you to reach higher while unleashing the greatness you already have within is the only real way to feel true joy from the inside out. Are you ready to embrace the joy you’re made for and discover the best version of you?

Below are 7 tips to embody ikigai and live a life of joy, fulfillment, balance, and radiance.

 

Step One: Apply self-awareness.

Take a little inventory of your thoughts regarding every facet of your life. Your ambitions, relationships, skills. The only way to make changes is to first become aware of what needs to be changed. In addition, take note of the things that are working for you.
Is there anything that feels particularly mundane about your life? What do you find yourself thinking about most? What’s a “dream” or “wish” you have, that you may not be taking seriously? And what do you truly enjoy?

Step Two: Be intentional.

Intentionality is key to finding fulfillment and balance. Without being intentional with your energy and where you put your focus, you will easily become drained, bored, or off track from your goals altogether.
Getting into a routine and checking in with yourself regularly is a really helpful way of staying in alignment. After all, your “reason for being” must come from living authentically.

Step Three: Stay in your own lane.

It can be easy to look to others for validation or to compare yourself, but at the end of the day, only you know if you are living from a place of authentic purpose.
External distractions can take you away from the little nudges that are trying to speak to you. Tune in to when you feel your best. Inner peace is an arrow. Follow what brings you that settling feeling within.

Step Four: Acknowledge your strengths.

Everyone has unique strengths and talents. It can be easy to take these gifts for granted—ANYONE who can read a map is a magician in my eyes!—but this hinders your innate potential. Sad face! If you’re feeling unsure of what your gifts are, ask some trusted friends or family. But if you can, try and come up with your strengths on your own.
It’s important to acknowledge your abilities and cultivate them. Remember: there are many different types of gifts and talents. It could be your creativity or your drive to make a difference. Maybe you’re good at organization or you love art. Acknowledge your strengths and use them as leverage to building your ikigai.

Step Five: Change your routine.

I’m all for routines. I love my morning and evening routine. They ground me and give my day structure. However, one of the best ways to reset is to do something out of the ordinary. It can be as small as changing your coffee order or taking a day trip to a nearby park.
Changing up your routine can invite new energy and ideas and foster “a-ha” moments. It also makes life more interesting. Don’t let your life become mundane!

Step Six: Challenge yourself. Show up.

You know that bubble of “protection” we call our comfort zone? Yup, it’s time to expand that. It’s time to show up for life more fully. Your comfort zone is like a little hiding place. Challenge yourself to break out of that shell a little. It doesn’t have to be big.
It could be reaching out to an old friend or trying a cooking class. Maybe it’s asking for a raise at work or saying no to something that’s adding stress to your life. Challenging yourself not only builds resilience and self-confidence but also draws out more of your potential. Don’t worry about the outcome, celebrate the effort!

Step Seven: Recalibrate.

What worked for you last year—or even last month— may not be working in your best interest now. Stay tuned to your growth. This is part of living with intentionality and awareness. Maybe you need to go to bed earlier or wake up earlier. Maybe you need more time alone. Recalibrate.
And lastly, here’s a bonus tip: BREATHE. You don’t need to have it all figured out at once. Plans may change or fall through, but these are often little blessings in disguise leading you in a better direction, even if it’s hard to see or believe in the moment. Follow the inklings in your heart. Dare to challenge your doubts. You are capable of so much more than you know.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want life to pass me by. After all, the more I can embody ikigai, the more love and joy I can give to others. So what about you? How do you want to live out your ikigai?

7 Weird Movies with Deep Meanings That Will Mess with Your Mind

What’s so great about weird movies?

Some movies can be mind-bending. Others might make us question things we thought were set in stone. And others still might bring us face to face with things that are part of us but better left undisturbed. And there are weird movies.
No matter the theme, films and the stories in them are part of our collective consciousness. One way or another, they are reflections of us and of the way we tell each other stories. Most of them follow traditional schemes, narratives and tropes. Even in those imagined spaces, order prevails.
But what about the films that are not concerned with order? What of the stories whose defining trait is their disorder, their… well, weirdness? Weird movies might be even more valuable to us than we ever imagined.

Let’s take a look at some:

  1. Mandy (Panos Cosmatos, 2018)

Panos Cosmatos is no stranger to weird movies.
In 2010, he gave us the indie wonder “Beyond the Black Rainbow”, with its enigmatic imagery, loopy soundtrack and cryptic storyline. This year, he created a sensation with “Mandy”.
There are a lot of factors for Mandy’s success, and the selection of Nic Cage for the role of the deranged protagonist slowly spiraling into a drug-fueled revenge-quest whilst brandishing a humongous medieval looking axe is only one of them.
The soundtrack is heavy and filled with drone sounds, the color palettes are like someone dropped an acid tab onto the film reel, and the story… Well, the story, centered around Andrea Riseborough’s character, is a trip in and of itself.
  1. The Devils (Ken Russel, 1971)

“The Exorcist” who? This is one of THE seminal weird movies on demonic possession. The film is a dramatized historical account of the rise and fall of Urbain Grandier, a 17th-century Roman Catholic priest executed for witchcraft following the supposed possessions in Loudun, France.
Reed plays Grandier in the film and Vanessa Redgrave plays a hunchbacked sexually repressed nun who finds herself inadvertently responsible for the accusations. The summary doesn’t do this disturbing film an ounce of justice.
The weirdness of the film derives from its visuals as well as its story. Derek Jarman, who worked as Russel’s production designer, created a filmic world in a film about religion, lush with the most sacrilegious colors, aesthetic and imagery.
Redgrave probably rose to new heights owing to her magnificent obsessive contortions, and the antithesis of the clash between piousness and grotesquery is something that will mess with your head for a long, long while.
  1. The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover (Peter Greenaway, 1989)

Speaking of weird, grotesque imagery, how do you like this gem by Peter Greenaway? This is one of those weird movies that don’t really scare you, but you can’t forget them for a minute.
It contains only three or so sets, a deranged mob leader, a guy who always reads, one very white bathroom, and the odd bit of cannibalism. Oh, and food. Lots and lots of food scenes.
Also, an albino ten-year-old tenor. Saying any more than this would really spoil the experience. Nonetheless, his is one weird movie you do not want to neglect seeing.
  1. A Field in England (Ben Wheatley, 2013)

A new strain of weird movies has arisen in the past decade, harking back to the 70’s. It’s called “folk horror revival”, based on the folk horror films of British Cinema in the 70’s, such as “The Wicker Man”.
Ben Wheatley, director of “A field in England”, has contributed to the trend with the majority of his filmography. All his films are a little cooky, but “Field” takes the cake. The film, shot in black-and-white, is set during the mid-17th century English Civil War.
Basically, a bunch of soldiers, an alchemist’s assistant and the alchemist eat a bunch of trippy field mushrooms and thing get really weird after that. The director utilized the use of black and white to create exposure effects, and other montaging tricks.
“A field in England” isn’t just weird; like “Mandy”, it’s a trip that one has to see to truly understand.
  1.  Love Exposure (Sion Sono, 2008)

If Panos Cosmatos is “no stranger to weird movies”, then Sion Sono, the madman who made this epic on love as a religion of collective madness, is the master of weird movies.
“Love Exposure” is nearly four hours long. It all revolves around a teenage Japanese boy trying to win the heart of his man-hating beloved. He believes she is the reincarnation of the Virgin Mary, thus completing his mother’s dying wish.
If this isn’t weird enough, he tries to achieve that via rigorous panty-shots training, excessive deception and becoming involved in a religious cult led by a stalker who also traffics cocaine on the side.This is a weird movie because it really commits to its depiction of love as a religious craze. Not only that, but its length, love-stricken characters, guerilla-style filming and overall offbeat humor contribute to a real cinematic experience.
  1.  Millennium Actress (Satoshi Kon, 2001)

This is one of my favorite films. As far as weird movies go, this might seem a little tame. Upon closer inspection, however, one can tell that this rightly deserves its title as a weird movie.
“Millennium Actress” deals with director Satoshi Kon’s most persisting question: what are the limits of our perception? What is the nature of memory, individual and collective? How is our reality “real”, based on these perceptions and memories?
The movie tells the story of two documentary filmmakers investigating the life of a retired acting legend. As she tells them the story of her life, the difference between reality and cinema becomes blurred.
In “Millennium Actress”, the weirdness lies in the execution. Anyone familiar with Kon’s work knows that he reveled in manipulating filmic space and time via the medium of animation. From one moment to the next, frames collapse onto one another.
We are transported, through the two journalists acting as audience surrogates, from the real world to movie sets and scenes. The scenes are anachronistic, all over the place.  They constitute fragments of the collective memory of Japanese cinema’s landmark moments.
The weirdness of the film lies in the lack of distinction between real life and cinematic life. If there is any difference at all, that is. The film seems to say that all that matters regarding our grasp of “real” is one thing, our memories.
  1.  Skins (Pieles, Eduardo Casanova, 2017)

Hey, it’s on Netflix! Skins (Spanish: Pieles) is a 2017 Spanish drama film directed by Eduardo Casanova. Weird movies-wise, its pastel color palette is only the tip of the iceberg.
Skins gets a spot in this list not because its weirdness is some sort of breakthrough. Instead, it was its anchoring into the most human and profound feelings: the desire to be loved and accepted.
All of the characters in Skins suffer from some form of physical deformity. One woman has only half a “normal” face. A man has modified himself to look like a mermaid. A woman has her anus and her mouth positions reversed and another man suffers from a facial burn.
Yet, despite the physical weirdness, through bittersweet humor and while condemning the fetishization of disabilities, the film has a heart.

There are many theories as to why we dream, but dreams about animals are particularly interesting.
We use animals in our everyday lives to describe certain aspects of human behaviour. For example, we ‘horse’ around with our friends when we have fun, we call a person a ‘snake’ if we don’t trust them, and someone is a ‘rat’ if they talk behind our backs.

Therefore, animals can symbolise parts of our personality.

And as we all know, dreams are packed full of symbols and hidden meanings. So whenever you dream about an animal, you can be sure that it relates to a personal aspect in your life.
Before we look at the different type of animals in dreams, it is worth remembering that the situation in which you find yourself with the animal is also important.
  • Domesticated animals in your dream suggest you are aware of your responsibilities but find them overwhelming at times.
  • Wild animals are an indication to express yourself in a more liberating fashion.
  • If you were attacked by the animal, this suggests your emotions are being forced down and they suddenly erupted out of nowhere.

Lizards are all about quick-thinking, survival and having their wits about them. This is what you need to be. Be cautious when you deal with others, and especially keep your eyes open for false friends.

To dream of magpies is a message from your subconscious to give up on that unrequited love. Whether it be a lover or a friendship, they are not interested, it is time to move on.

Any kind of burrowing animals in dreams are a sign of hidden emotions that we don’t or can’t face. They are also a symbol of innocence.

Mice in dreams are related to outside influences. They represent meddling in your affairs or unwelcome visitors.

This is another hugely symbolic dream that indicates a refusal to see or acknowledge what is going on around you. You must take your head out of the sand and examine the situation.

Peacocks are all about showing off and displays of grandeur and this dream is a warning of failure due to overconfidence and hubris on your part.

As you might expect, black rats are not a good sign. They denote the signs of hidden jealousyin close friends or family. However, white rats are benign and signify protective forces around you.

These omens of bad fortune are a symbol of sadness and grief, usually suppressed by the dreamer.
 
 
26. Snakes
 
 
 
Snakes in dreams usually have sexual connotations. They are phallic symbols and represent our sexual urges. Another interesting factor about snakes is that they are also temperature-dependent. If the snake in your dream was cold and sluggish, this could mean you feel bored sexually.
 
 
27. Zebras
 
 
 
No two zebras have the same pattern of stripes, therefore, they are unique creatures. To dream about a zebra is an encouraging sign to expand your creativity to the next level.

Getting to know the authentic self that is hiding deep inside you is the first step on the long path of liberation.
Just think about it, if you dare. Your true self is hidden deep within you, covered by layers upon layers of opinions, expectations, and excuses. You are not what you think you are or what you’re expecting of yourself or how you excuse your behavior in front of yourself and others.
The sooner you let go of this well-practiced character you play, the sooner you’ll reach your authentic self. This is the person you’ll feel at home with, however flawed or afraid they might be. This is the person you’ll be able not to change, but to shape, mold, hone and improve.
Everything else would be a lie, and lies are heavy. Lies weigh you down like chains.

But how do you reach this person you’ve ghosted for so long?

Venturing inward is the best chance you have. Instead of keeping everything on the surface, dive deeper underneath. Introspection will help you break the ice and adjust your eyes to the dark. But make no mistake, you’ll need to go pass beyond what feels comfortable and safe.
You’ll need to start reflecting upon what you’re seeing there.
Self-reflection is looking the truth in the eyes and living to tell. It’s also a learning experience that allows you to discover who you are and what you want.
Self-reflection always leads to insight, thus contributing always new and accurate details to your once distorted self-image.

Getting to know your authentic self starts with these five open-ended questions:

1. What Are Five Non-Negotiable Values in My Life?

 
Being flexible and willing to compromise is a fine quality in a person, but even the best of us must draw a line somewhere. The things you are not ready to negotiate on are your non-negotiable values. They are your very essence, the foundations, and principles of your true being.
Do you know what they are?
Figuring out what matters the most to you will keep you on course through thick and thin. Not only in terms of moral fiber and integrity, no. Even more importantly, these non-negotiable values will help you stay empowered and in control of everything you need to reach your goal.
At the same time, they will help you discover your priorities in life.
So ask yourself this:
  • What about your life fills you with pure love and joy?
  • What are some of the qualities you admire the most?
Maybe you’ll say health, self-expression, and authority, or honesty, friendship, and family. To a lot of people, love, empathy, and faith are non-negotiable. For me, that’s creativity, beauty, and love. For you, it may be something very different, like success, diligence, and ambition.
There are no wrong answers here.

2. What Would I Do If I Couldn’t Fail?

 
The fear of failure masks our greatest desires.
Fear stands between you and your authentic self too, keeping you comfortably tucked in a bed of lies. This is your Netflix & Chill persona telling you that you are too fat to get up and start pursuing beauty. You can try, it whispers in your ear, but you’ll only end up embarrassing yourself.
This is your corporate self, telling you that you’d never succeed as an artist. Or your stay-at-home-mom fear, preventing you from seeking a career.
Terrified of failing, we often decide not to even try. This is why so many of us end up miserable in our private and professional relationships. Instead of seeking what we truly want at the cost of failure, we choose to settle for less. It’s so much safer there, where you cannot fail.
But what would you do if you were guaranteed success?
Whatever your instinct is screaming right now is what you really want from this life.
So what if you fail? You’ll not be the first nor last to lose hope and regain new strength. If you think about it, you have absolutely nothing to lose. Bruises will only make you wiser and closer to who you are. You’ll understand that success is not in succeeding, but in overcoming fear.

3. What Are the Experiences I Want to Have to Live My Dream Life?

Of course, life isn’t solely about collecting those crowning gems.
Though staying focused on your quest is admirable, you must take some time to recharge your batteries and recuperate your energy. This will help you appreciate your achievements more, which will, in turn, keep you energized and motivated enough to reach the end goal.
Do you know what else you must do from time to time? Self-reflect on the things you’ve done and the person you’ve become.
This is why what happens on sidequests may be even more important than all the obstacles you overcome while your eyes are fixed on the prize.
These are the experiences you go through alone or share with the people you love, only seemingly uneventful and unmeaningful. Like visiting Louvre or climbing the Mount Everest.
Your bucket list must be full of these and similar forgotten gems. Find some time to collect these too. They will keep you grounded and in touch with who you are even after you become a big shot with no time for life’s simple pleasures. Cherish them as priceless things they are.

4. What Is on My Schedule That Doesn’t Need to Be There?

 
Have you figured out who is your biggest enemy in life? No, it’s not fear. It’s time.
Whether or not you’ll fear the inevitable depends on you alone. This paralyzing, irrational emotion can be overcome with a shred of will, but time can never be stopped. The best you can do about it is not to be wasteful. Commit your time to two things – mindfulness and growth.
Mindfulness feels like breaking the clock, as it allows you to freeze the moment and savor every last bit of it. Growth on the hand is the closest thing we have to a time-defying spell. The more you grow, the longer you’re remembered. Grand people are immortal, like long-dead stars.
So think about what you’re doing with your time. Is it carefully managed in a way that nurtures your non-negotiable values?
Are there things on your schedule that you can abandon or cut back? Have you made promises for a couple of months from now that you will regret then? Are you giving away your precious time on toxic people? Be grateful for the time you’ve been given. Don’t throw it away.

5. What Am I Doing That I Don’t Enjoy, and What Am I Doing That I Love?

 
In discovering who you are and what you want, perhaps the most telling signs are the things you’re doing on a daily basis. The things you enjoy, you should keep. The things you hate, not so much. Day by day, they are taking you one step further from who you truly are.
Of course, not all good things are enjoyable. You cannot throw around self-reflection as an excuse for being a selfish partner of a bad friend. If you hate going to work, you shouldn’t quit just because.
Life is a fickle thing and you must discover the balance between your authentic self and a sufficient version of you.
If you look deep down and see that you’re afraid, look again. That’s your crooked self-beliefthat’s distorting your true image.
But to return to your last question on the path to self-discovery, use self-reflection to see what you love and enjoy the most. Let these things be something worth sacrificing for, an intrinsic motivation behind doing the necessary things you don’t enjoy very much.

Final Thought

Never give up on your authentic self in return for love and success.
An actor can only play a role for that long before losing all sense of who he is. Make honesty your non-negotiable value, live with no fear of your hidden flaws, embrace the experiences that make you vulnerable and exposed, and spend more time reflecting upon your choices.
But most importantly, do everything for a chance to do what you love.

Some people remember most of their dreams. Yet, there are some who have precognitive dreams and wish they didn’t remember them at all.
The basic meaning of these dreams is to be able to see the future by extrasensory methods. In this case, dreams can be psychic dreams. While so many people think their dreams foretell the near future, others think these ideas are only a coincidence.
How to recognize precognitive dreams?
It’s not always easy to tell whether the dreams you are having are precognitive or just ordinary lucid dreams. However, there are signs which point to these types of dreams, helping you to understand how to deal with them.

Most precognitive dreams can be recognized in several ways:

1. Sensory indicators

Yes, some vivid images are actually psychic dreams, but not all of them. One way to find out if your sensory experiences are indeed indicators is to gauge how powerful the elements seem.
For instance, if you can clearly hear voices in your dream, and you can remember the statements made, then you will often awake and hear exactly what was spoken. This also works for visual experiences and other strong sensory feelings. Pay close attention to these things.

2. Dream frustration

If your dream seems to irritate you both while dreaming and when awake afterward, you may be having dreams of precognition. You may wake up and be agitated from the dream and then fall back to sleep.
Some of these dreams can be visions of terrible things while others can be positive events. Either way, even with good dreams, they will have a sense of irritation about them.

3. Urgency

Since precognitive dreaming means witnessing future situations derived from psychic abilities, you will often feel an urgency about these dreams. After you wake, you will feel a need to do something or be somewhere.
Unfortunately, most of the time, you have no idea where, when, or why you need to be in another place. You have a purpose without instructions for that purpose. And again, the purpose is faceless.

4. Dreams of others

Do you know how sometimes you dream about yourself and the strange things you’re doing? Well, a psychic dream will mostly be about someone else. In these dreams other people are doing things, speaking, and fulfilling a part of some elaborate happening. So, truthfully, you will be absent as if you are an onlooker of someone else’s life.

5. Vivid details

Precognitive dreams, unlike most vivid dreams, will have much clearer details. While vivid dreams will be pictures you can remember and sounds which stay with you all morning after waking, these dreams are almost supernaturally vivid.
The details of these dreams seem so solid you could reach out and touch them. Sometimes during these dreams, the people you dream about can do just that. They may be reaching out to touch a dress and when you wake, you can feel the fabric in your hands as if you were there too.

How to interpret your precognitive dreams?

Analyzing dreams is important because there is a reason why you have them. There are different ways you can see these dreams as well and simple steps toward understanding where they come from and why they happen.
Here, let’s look at the basics.

1. The dream journal

I bet most of you’ve heard of keeping a dream journal, haven’t you? Well, as a teenager, I attempted to do this. Except my biggest problem was remembering the task from one day to the next. The truth is, If I didn’t write down the dream when I first awoke, I would forget many elements from the dream, which was irritating once I remembered later in the day.
So, it’s kind of obvious what you should do. As soon as you wake up, write down as many elements of the dream as you can. Even if there are only pieces of the dream in your memory. If you don’t dream, then write down, “No recalled dreams”. This statement may even kickstart frequent dreaming.

2. Forget the dictionaries for dreams

Stop using these dream interpretation guides and just pay attention to the elements of the psychic dreams. Most of the time, these details will be clear in symbolism.
Just think about what happened in your dream and connect images to the events in your life. For example, one night, I dreamt of being in a war zone, and I believe that is because I am at war in my mind with mental illness.

3. Simple details

Pay attention to simple details in the dream. Although these elements may seem fairly lame, they could have a greater meaning. Ask questions about the details and learn even more about what the dream may mean to you.

4. Therapists and dreams

Do not rely on great revelations from therapists who use dream interpretation as their only tool. Actually, these aren’t what real therapists do. Instead, quality therapists and counselors usually get to know the patient long before speaking of dreams and dream elements.
Images in the dreams could come from deep roots from childhood, or even present negative circumstances that are revealed in private sessions.

The power of the precognitive dream

Oh, how powerful dreams of precognition may be. They tell of negative and positive events which leave us with a foreboding feeling, or at least what we’re starting to believe.
But, please remember, there could be much more to your dreams than visions of the future. In fact, they could simply be dreams warning you that you have needed changes in your life.
So, examine your life, and connect those details with reality. Then you can interpret and separate dreams from reality, leaving the rest for fate.

Dreams about driving a car can be wonderfully exhilarating or extremely frightening. It all depends on the context.
If you were driving a car in your dream and it’s stuck in your mind, it could be a sign from your subconscious. As to why we dream? There are many theories.
Freud was the first to put forward the idea that we all have hidden desires buried in our subconscious mind. Freud believed that dreams are a way of letting us know what these repressed desires are.
Others think they have more literal interpretations. Namely, they represent the stressful situations we are experiencing. As such, we should look at the symbols and images in dreams and decipher those if we want to really interpret dreams properly.
The good thing about driving dreamsis that they are full of symbols. Just think about traffic lights for instance. A red light indicates stop whatever you’re doing and green means go in any language.

How to interpret dreams about driving a car?

Who was driving in the dream?

This is probably the most important aspect of the dream. If you were driving, it signifies a level of control.
If you weren’t driving, who was? What is your relationship with this person in real life? Do you get on with them? Now, how did you feel about them driving? Happy, nervous?
If you were nervous, then examine what’s going on between the pair of you in your normal life. Is there any friction? Are they trying to control your life? Or are they just trying to support you?

How well were they driving?

If you drove well, it means you are confident and in control in all areas of your life. However, if you didn’t, it is a sign of low self-esteem.
If someone else drove, consider how good their driving was. Were they driving too fast? This indicates you feel out of control. If they are driving too slow, you could be too impatient with others.

How fast were you driving?

If you were driving fast, then your dream may be telling you to slow downand enjoy the scenery a bit more. Relax with your family, take time off.
Conversely, if you were going slowly, it is an indication you are heading in the right direction, but you could work more efficiently.

Were you in the front or the back?

This is another aspect of control. If you were in the back, you are literally an audience member of your own life. By sitting back and watching someone else take control over the car, you are stuck in the past.
You need to move on from whatever is holding you back.

Did you arrive at your destination?

If you got to your destination, this is a good sign that you are on the right path.
If you got stuck in a traffic jam or were delayed for another reason, then your dream is telling you that you may need to look at other courses of action. Perhaps the route you are taking is not the best way for you.

How old was the car in your dream?

How well-maintained is the car in your dream? For example, are the tyres worn? Is the paint chipped? It is missing any vital parts it needs to run efficiently? Does it look smart and clean or untidy and dirty? Does it run well or sound as if it is going to break down at any minute?
There are obvious symbolic clues here. For example, a clean, tidy well-maintained car that runs smoothly is a good indication that all is running well in your life.
The opposite, however, a dodgy car that is dirty and about to fall apart should give you cause for concern. What is going on in your life that you need to focus on?

Were you driving during the day or at night?

The type of accident is significant here. Did you hit something or did another car hit you? This is a sign of conflicting ideas battling for control. Perhaps you have met someone whose ideas conflict with yours?

Did you crash?

This is a clear sign to slow down, your body has literally ‘crashed’ and needs to stop and take time off. It also signifies mental strain.
Has something important come to a sudden end? A job, relationship, have youlost something or someone very important recently?

Was there a fire in your car?

Fire in any dream represents two different factors; cleansing and anger. To decide which one is relevant in your driving dream, you should look at the context of the whole dream.
Who was with you in the car? In real life do you feel angry with them? Have they hurt you in some way? If the dream is about cleansing, have you come to the end of something in real life and you are ready to move on?

Are there other cars around you?

The main factor in driving dreams is what you were doing and the type of car you were in. However, if there were other cars around you, they are significant.
This is because they represent other aspects of you that you might not be aware of. For example, if they are people you know, they could indicate traits you don’t want to admit to owning or want to possess.

You feel the pressure throb in your veins. A lump rises in your throat as your colleagues watch you closely. They are expecting an answer. They are expecting you to comply. Every fibre of your being wants to scream “NO I CAN’T.” But as if possessed, you automatically smile sweetly and say, “Yes, I’ll do it, thanks for asking.”
WTF is going on here?! Why can’t you just say “no,” and walk away?
If you’re like me, people-pleasing has run havoc in your life. It has crushed your spirit repeatedly. It has robbed you of peace of mind, personal empowerment and the courage to follow your goals and dreams. It has hit you while you’re down and dragged you through the dirt. It might have also contributed to chronic issues in your life such as anxiety disorders, depression, addiction or co-dependency.
So what exactly is people-pleasing … and how can we heal the root cause of it?
16 Habits of People-Pleasing Personality Types
At some point or another, we have all struggled with people-pleasing. After all, as social creatures, we are prone to peer pressure and the desire to fit in. But there is a big difference between the desire for acceptance and people-pleasing. People-pleasing is not just a once-in-a-while foible: it’s a daily struggle.
Here are 16 common habits:
  • You struggle to say “no”
  • You find it hard to be assertive and voice your opinions
  • You’re hyper-vigilant about perceived rejection from others (always on the lookout)
  • You’re an emotophobe (you fear negative emotions)
  • You’re excessively altruistic/philanthropic
  • You often suffer at the expense of doing a favor for others
  • You have a weak sense of self and poor interpersonal boundaries
  • You become emotionally dependent/co-dependent when in relationships/friendships
  • You’re addicted to approval from others
  • You have a neurotic desire to be liked no matter what
  • You feel shattered for days or weeks when someone criticises you
  • You have low self-worth
  • You act based on what “other people think” of you
  • You always put yourself in other’s shoes, but you rarely show compassion towards yourself
  • You blindly believe in other people’s “goodness” even if they are clearly abusive towards you
  • You fear losing control of yourself because you repress so much
It’s also said that people-pleasing can form a bridge to other conditions such as borderline personality disorder and social anxiety disorder.

Why Being “Too Nice” Can Be Dangerous

Obviously there is nothing wrong with being nice. But having the neurotic desire to be nice is dangerous for a number of reasons. Here’s why:

1. You suppress A LOT of emotion

Inevitably, wanting to be loved and needed by others all the time results in suppressing tons of uncomfortable emotions. I’m talking rage, hatred, bitterness, annoyance, grief and stress — anything that is contrary to the altruistic image you crave to portray. You might not be conscious of repressing these types of emotions, but rest assured, it comes with the job description. You can’t give yourself entirely to other people, deny yourself, and expect to feel fine and dandy in the longterm.
Suppression of emotions eventually results in physical or psychological breakdowns. Many chronic mental and physical illnesses are fuelled by the neurotic desire to please others.

2. Extreme pressure to “keep up appearances”

One of the worst things about constantly being nice is the extreme pressure you feel to constantly maintain your self-image. It feels good constantly being on people’s “good” sides. It feels good to avoid negative feelings and get the spotlight for being a saint. But this addiction comes at a price: chronic stress. Often that stress is imperceptible, but it’s always there, always demanding that you keep your mask strapped on even though it might be suffocating you.

3. People use you

When you’re a people-pleaser you open yourself up to abuse. Narcissists, energy vampires, bullies and other types of wounded people are drawn to you like fresh meat. Having weak boundaries, low self-esteem and the insatiable desire to please makes you the perfect “use and abuse” target. And unconsciously, you like feeling needed and wanted, so you unwittingly continue the toxic cycle.
It’s just like what the famous Eurythmics song “Sweet dreams are made of this” says: “Everybody’s looking for something. Some of them want to use you. Some of them want to get used by you. Some of them want to abuse you. Some of them want to be abused …”

4. You have the intense need to be in control

At first, people-pleasing might come across as a selfless act. But people-pleasing is actually a selfish act because you’re trying to control someone else’s reaction towards you by behaving in a certain way.
In fact, people-pleasing is more about the desire to be in control than it is to please other people. Wanting to be liked by others is just a symptom of the desire to be in control because deep down you feel powerless or worthless. This is why people-pleasing is so exhausting — it goes against the flow of life, and takes so much effort to maintain.

5. No one really knows the “true” you

Keeping so much locked inside of you for fear of being disapproved of makes you extremely guarded. In fact, if you’re a people-pleaser you might fear for instance, getting drunk, because all of the secret thoughts and opinions you have might come to the surface. In other words, you’ll no longer be in control of yourself.
When you’re a people-pleaser no one really knows the “true” and authentic you — they only know the facade that you present them with. Unfortunately, this desire to be loved and approved often backfires, making you feel more lonely and disconnected as time goes on. Eventually, you wind up feeling “invisible” and “unseen,” even if you are constantly in the spotlight.

How to Stop Being a People-Pleaser

Naturally you might be wondering right now, “What can I do to stop this?”
Let me tell you, there is so much bad advice out there. And the solution to overcoming this addiction (because it is), is NOT pulling the middle finger at everyone.
I don’t condone the “fuck you” approach because it’s immature and reactive.
Instead, I recommend the harder-but-wiser approach of:

As someone who has struggled with a people-pleasing personality (Enneagram 9 INFJ by the way), I know how self-destructive this trait can be. Because of this need to be accepted by others, I have suffered intense periods of anxiety and chronic pain, not to mention tons of repressed emotions for years.
But the first step to overcoming this problem is to shift your focal point from the outside world, to the inside world. Eventually, with time and practice utilizing the points above, you will be able to say sincerely and openly “I am enough unto myself” as I now can.

3 Ways to Experience “Dadirri” in Nature.

Dadirri. It is inner, deep listening and quiet, still awareness. Dadirri recognizes the deep spring that is inside us. We call on it and it calls to us … When I experience dadirri, I am made whole again. I can sit on the riverbank or walk through the trees; even if someone close to me has passed away, I can find my peace in this silent awareness.

Ever since I learned the meaning of the word dadirri in a conversation I was having with an Australian aboriginal friend of mine, I immediately fell in love with its significance. I was teaching him about ‘Pachamama‘ (what we call mother nature in Quechua) and other of my indigenous ways of looking at the world, while he was teaching me about his.
Nature is one of the best healing and teaching environments that has been used by every indigenous culture to reconnect with God, or with the Divine. In a time where we are so materialistically centered, it is unsurprising that we often take for granted a gift that is so freely available.
It’s easy to forget that we don’t own nature, but we are a part of it.

Why We Must Reconnect With Nature

I travel into nature every free opportunity that I have so I can be alone, heal, revitalize and re-energize my powers, to reconnect with my initiation commitments, to converse with natural spirit allies and helpers, to be inspired and to generally fill myself with the connection to “All there is that is sacred”, so that I can come back to my life with more strength, power and balance.
In our densely populated world with its sprawling cities everywhere, it is often difficult to find an accessible place in nature to reconnect with. But in my experience to develop inner balance, and thus survive as a species, we must change our relationship with nature, reconnect with it and redefine our place within it.
Modern science is agreeing more and more with the notion that our dissociation from nature is extremely harmful to our psyche and to our individual and collective development. Bill Plotkin, an eco-psychologist who has worked with people in the wild for over 20 years, writes in his book Nature and The Human Soul:
… healthy human development requires a constant balancing of the influences and demands of both nature and culture … By suppressing the nature dimension of human development … industrial growth society engenders an immature citizenry unable to imagine a life beyond consumerism and soul-suppressing jobs.
There are three main reasons why I see we should immerse ourselves more into nature:
1. Artificial Lives: Most of our days are spent in artificial environments that have no living energy or ‘spirit’. We work and live in buildings made from bricks, and rooms illuminated by artificial lighting, we stare at artificial screens 5 to 6 hours of our waking time, and are surrounded by artificial noises and sounds from messages, emails, calls, apps and video games. This results in an over-stimulated mind and under-stimulated senses, all of which disconnect us from ourselves.
2. Reflects Our Souls: Our soul is that wild energy that vibrates in all that is living. When we are in nature, we are instinctively able to connect with these deeper aspects of ourselves, to explore our natural selves, and to find peacefulness and wisdom through inner-balance.
3. Species Survival: Unless we learn to reconnect with the natural world, respect her laws and appreciate the air we breath, the food we eat, the water we drink thanks to her, our survival as a species is doubtful. The way we treat nature serves as a great reflection on our level of conscious development. If we destroy nature, we suffer much more than she does. We as a species depend on her; she doesn’t depend on us. Eventually, with enough time she can heal any wounds we inflict on her, but we can never heal our own species’ extinction.

3 Ways We Can Reconnect With Nature

My experience has taught me that trying to make someone environmentally aware is just as ineffective as trying to make someone animal cruelty aware.
The whole PETA approach of “Meat is Murder” to shock and enrage publicity, and the guilt tripping approach of: “You’re no better than a mass murderer! Your eating habits are revolting and evil!! Join us!” portrays vegans and vegetarians as being subverts, accusers, haters, which often does nothing but repel and scare many people away from even considering a change in their eating habits.
So, instead of following the demands to “take care of nature”, why don’t we take the time to immerse ourselves in the natural world and experience all the physical and mental benefits it can provide us? It is hard to take care of something you have developed no respect for.
These are some of the suggestions I offer our students to help them reconnect with nature:
1. Educated awareness: We live in an age where being environmentally friendly is associated with being a hippy, hipster, tree-hugger or eco-freak. Caring for the environment is somehow thought of as being stupid or uncool. Mostly this comes from the lack of education we provide to teach children and adults of the many benefits they can experience from immersing themselves in the wilderness. The first step is to develop a vibrant knowledge and understanding of the subject.
2. Become an exhibitionist: We often think of nature as a one-sided relationship, or in other words: that we simply go into nature to look at it. But have you ever thought that Nature also experiences you? ‘Pachamama’ as we call her, is very aware of the presence and energy that you bring into her environment. A fun exercise to try is going into nature with a piece of paper and pencil; sitting down, closing your eyes for however long you wish, and concentrating on your breathing, imagining that Mother Nature is watching you all around. Once you’re done, open your eyes and write down your experience, the thoughts that popped into your head and the feelings. You’ll be surprised what she can inspire in you.
3. Experience nature with intent: A good way to practice dadirri is going to a park or nature walk, and experience nature with intent. To do this, dedicate the first five minutes of your walk to noting all the sounds you hear. You then dedicate the next five minutes to experiencing or feeling the sensations produced by the wind, warmth of the sun, coolness of the rain, or even by extending your hand so you can touch the trees as you walk by. The next five minutes try to notice all the trees and plants, as well as all the wildlife you can find. And finally, the last few minutes can be dedicated to becoming aware of your connection with the earth, by experiencing how your feet firmly touch the ground with every step.
Intuitively, we all know the value of nature. When we imagine a calm and relaxing place, a place to escape from the business of the modern world, for example, most of us imagine a sanctuary in nature. I hope this article helps you get back in touch with our oldest friend.
