4 Examples of Sublimation That Demonstrate How It Works in Daily Life

We all have thoughts and feelings which we know are ‘not okay’ by society’s standards. It’s a natural element of the human condition. What sets humans apart from animals is not a lack of animal impulses, but rather how we manage our animal impulses. One of the techniques we subconsciously use is sublimation. Following is a brief discussion of the theory and a set of examples of sublimation in progress, to help crystallise the concept in your minds.

The Theory of Sublimation

The concept of psychological sublimation finds its roots in the work of Sigmund Freud. Although his theories are contentious these days, there are some fascinating facets to his beliefs about the human mind.

Freud divided the human psyche into three distinct aspects. The Id, our ‘animal brain,’ is home to impulses and urges. The superego, which is the expression of society’s morality, engineers our behaviour to comply with morals, laws and expectations. Last but not least, the ego, which continually works to find the balance between the two.

One of the ways in which the ego balances out the Id’s impulses and the superego’s lofty ideals is through a set of defence mechanisms. These include repression, reaction formation, projection, denial, regression, intellectualisation, rationalisation, displacement and, you guessed it, sublimation.

What Is Sublimation?

But what is sublimation? In essence, it’s the phasing of one thing into another. In chemistry, it’s the transformation of a solid into a gas, in psychology it’s the channelling of inappropriate impulses into positive and productive behaviours.

Instead of reacting in extreme anger, you might clean the house, or go for a run. Instead of sexually propositioning a person, you might write poetry or dance. This can be done consciously but happens most of the time subconsciously.

The process of sublimation protects us from the anxiety around having unacceptable thoughts and urges, preventing us from being negatively impacted by them. Channelling animalistic and primitive impulses into positive outlets preserves our social relationships, our social standing, and essential elements of our lives like jobs and our ability to support ourselves.

It can also act on positive feelings if we subconsciously believe they are too good to last, to protect us from disappointment. In this form, sublimation can become part of the self-sabotaging tendencies people often subconsciously enact when things are going well.

Examples of Sublimation

Sublimation happens mostly subconsciously. We may, therefore, be unaware that this is one of our coping mechanisms. Still, most of the following examples of sublimation apply to the majority of people at some point or another in their lives.

Physical Activity

Competitive sports is one productive way in which aggressive or dominant personality types channel their impulses. Rather than fight or dominate other people, they metaphorically crush them on the sports field. It can be seen as a human version of the ritualised challenges for territory or females that occur in the animal world. A few examples of how sublimation works in full swing might be combat or contact sports and racing.

Often if people feel frustrated, angry, and scattered, or if they are sexually aroused, they go for a run, for a walk, to the gym, use their punching bag etc. These are also sublimation examples. In this way, our mind converts the unacceptable urge to lash out or to have sex with strangers into a beneficial activity.

Chores and menial tasks

Another typical example of sublimation is the conversion of inappropriate urges into useful, menial tasks that, let’s be honest, may otherwise never get done. Instead of being unfaithful to your partner, you pull the weeds out of your flower-beds. Rather than obsessively micro-manage your children, you purge and re-organise all of your belongings.

When you feel like yelling at or confronting your boss, you tidy your desk-space. If your anxiety is causing you deeply distressing and troubling thoughts, you scrub the kitchen and bathrooms clean.

Creative Pursuits

Creativity is a prevalent alternative to inappropriate urges and impulses, most frequently when it comes to sexual sublimation. Instead of sexually accosting a particular person, an example of sublimating your sexual desire might be turning to paint, drawing, sculpting, writing, or any form of craft.

Another example of using creativity to sublimate socially frowned-upon emotions is the transferring of depression, sadness, anxiety or addiction into works of art. Through poetry, story-telling, or other artistic pursuits, negative emotions are channelled into socially valued expressions.

Life-Paths

People’s chosen life-paths can often be expressions of their sublimated urges and desires. Successful managers or administrators have a strong passion for control, micro-managing and organisation. Another example of sublimation might be leadership roles. People in positions of authority often have a need to be obeyed, listened to, feared, loved or respected, that is satisfied through the successful fulfilment of their jobs.

On the darker end of the scale, someone with an urge to cut or harm people might train to be a surgeon, or someone with aggressive tendencies might join the military or the police.

Can we consciously choose sublimation?

Sublimation is, for the most part, a mature subconscious way of dealing with inappropriate urges and impulses. Using the above examples of sublimation and with the help of mental health professionals, train yourself to recognise it. You can then try to identify the urge or impulse your ego is working to conceal.

The crucial element in sublimating consciously is to accept, recognise and validate your feelings, before determining which activity to channel them into. There is no such thing as an inappropriate feeling, only inappropriate or harmful actions. Once you are aware of the urges your ego is hiding from you, you can consciously sublimate them into the activity of your choice.

The holidays are here again. Are you doing something fun or fulfilling this season? It’s time to get into the Christmas spirit!
 
It’s cold outside, but inside it’s cozy and warm, at least for the fortunate ones of us. The winter season is here and it’s brought one of our favorite holidays – Christmas. While some people adore Christmas and love the hustle and bustle of shopping and parties, there are some who have trouble getting into the spirit of Christmas. Some people just don’t know how to enjoy the holidays.
 
The Christmas spirit visits once again
 
You can think of the spirit of Christmas as a wonderful guest, bringing gifts and eggnog, along with toasty scarves to keep us warm. That’s all good and everything, but what about those who cannot envision the spirit of Christmas, and the ones who are presently wishing it was over?
 
I think it’s time we helped them learn how to throw their arms around Christmas and enjoy! Remember, Christmas doesn’t have to be stressful. There are many low-key ways to celebrate the holidays as well. Let’s take a look at a nice mixture of exciting and soothing ideas, so everyone can enjoy the Christmas spirit.
 
Ways to celebrate the holidays:
 
1. Give back to others
 
This Christmas season, instead of worrying about the gifts you may receive, concentrate on giving to others. I don’t mean the normal routine of exchanging gifts around the tree, yeah do that too, but I mean giving to charities.
 
There are many Christmas charities in need of toys, like toys for Tots, or soup kitchens that will be feeding Christmas dinner to those who have nowhere to go. So, why not volunteer to give something back to others who otherwise might not receive anything if you didn’t.
 
2. Listen to holiday music
 
Yes, turn on those jingle bells, and rock around the Christmas tree. It’s time to appreciate Christmas music again. No other time of the year do we saturate our brains with the carols and songs of the holiday. To truly embrace Christmas, we must turn on the tunes, maybe dance around the room, and just enjoy the atmosphere of the joyful season.
 
3. Shop local establishments
 
Instead of maneuvering your way through department stores, try visiting a small family-owned shop. These little stores are usually located in the town center and decorated with Christmas lights and other tinsels. Inside, you will find things like handcrafted knick-knacks, hand-woven scarves and sweaters, and even a few things for the guys.
 
Visiting these places will also support your local entrepreneurs. After all, smaller businesses are the runts of the litter.
 
4. Play in the snow
 
I live in the south, so I rarely see snow all that much. But when I do, I make sure to go outside and enjoy its white brilliance. I love to make snowmen, have snowball fights, and sometimes just stick my tongue out and let snowflakes dissolve in my mouth.
 
 
Anyway, if you get snow every winter, you’re probably used to all that splendor, but you can still enjoy it anyway. As for the ones who rarely see it, we hope with anticipation that snow will come every single Christmas.
5. Enjoy some crafts
 
 
Like a child, we loved to make paper snowflakes or string popcorn to hang on the tree. I don’t know if anyone knows how to do this anymore, or if anyone even thinks about it. Well, it doesn’t have to be these crafts, but enjoying some sort of Christmas creation can definitely help you embrace all the magic of Christmas.
 
Here are a few ideas: bake Christmas cookies, make your own wreath, or build a gingerbread house. Just be creative!
 
6. Enjoy spiritual aspects of Christmas
 
If you are spiritual, there will be many things you can enjoy this Christmas, like viewing the manger scene or visiting the church. If your traditions are different but still spiritual, you can partake in those traditions as well. Now is the time to appreciate your winter season beliefs. So, do what you do and embrace the Christmas spirit.
 
7. Festivities
 
Before you leave work for the holidays, there will probably be an office party. If you’re introverted like me, you will not want to go. Sigh…I hate to say this, but let’s just get out there and enjoy one little celebration before we set our schedules for the holidays as we want them. So go to that party, enjoy in your own way, and wish everyone a Merry Christmas!

It’s time we embraced the Christmas spirit and realize that the holidays are right around the corner. There is always this crescendo that builds and builds until that wonderful Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Once it’s over, most of us feel a little down for a few days, which is another reason why we should embrace the holidays while they’re here. So put on that ugly Christmas sweater and go do something that honors Christmas.

7 Famous People with Asperger’s Who Made a Difference in the World

Asperger’s is a common disorder that affects over 37 million people. However, some of those sufferers with Asperger’s are famous people who have made a profound difference in the world.
 
It can be a worry when someone we care about has something which makes them a little different. Asperger’s is a common mental disorder that causes social difficulties, especially in children. This can be a concern for parents as children grow into adulthood. Yet, there are many famous people who suffered from Asperger’s and yet have made overwhelming changes to the world. Some sufferers are people you might not even expect.
 
What Is Asperger’s Syndrome?
 
Asperger’s was removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 2013. Therefore, it does not have what you would call a ‘formal diagnosis’. It is now part of the Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis. However, many still associate with the name Asperger’s due to the difference of the syndrome to Autism.
 
The key difference between Autism and Asperger’s is that those with Asperger’s still have a keen interest in others. They want to fit in and make friends. Still, they struggle to do so due to their difficulty with emotion and empathy.
 
Asperger’s is named after Austrian paediatrician Hans Asperger in 1933. He discovered a string of traits in young children. These included:
“a lack of empathy, little ability to form friendships, one-sided conversation, intense absorption in a special interest, and clumsy movements.”
 
Asperger called his young children ‘little professors‘ because they would know a great deal about their favorite topic.
 
Asperger’s is a subtype of autism spectrum disorder. Sufferers are highly functioning, intelligent people but have difficulty in social situations. Those with the disorder struggle to associate with other people and lack emotional insight or comedy. They also may seem awkward or clumsy and may become fixated on certain subjects.
 
Telltale signs are a rigidity to a certain schedule, however unusual, and an oversensitivity to loud noises, bright lights or strong smells.
 
Diagnosing Asperger’s is a difficult process because there is no one test. Instead, psychologists will look for evidence of symptoms from quite a long list in order to diagnose. A proper diagnosis will take several factors into account. For example, the relative strength and frequency of these symptoms as well as interactions with others.
 
There are many famous people with Asperger’s, or at least considered to have it due to their behaviors. Below we have a list of famous people who are believed to have Asperger’s. This diverse list can prove that Asperger’s is really something that gives you a little extra potential.
 
7 Famous People with Asperger’s
 
Sir Isaac Newton (1643 – 1727)
 
 
Sir Isaac Newton is one of the greatest minds in math and physics. He revolutionized the field with his three laws of motion. Nonetheless, he could be a jerk at times. However, recently, psychologists have theorized that Newton may have been struggling with Asperger’s. Reports suggest that Newton was not good with people, despite his mighty intelligence.
 
Thomas Jefferson (1743 – 1826)
 
 
Thomas Jefferson has been one of the most controversial suggestions when it comes to famous people with Asperger’s. This suggestion is due to his discomfort in public speaking. Those who knew him also said that he had difficulty relating to others. Likewise, he was sensitive to loud noises and kept strange routines. Although this is mere speculation, the evidence points strongly to Asperger’s syndrome.
 
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791)

 
Of all the famous people with Asperger’s, Mozart is arguably one of the biggest. Most psychologists are in agreement that Mozart suffered from Asperger’s. Or at least fell somewhere on the autism spectrum. He was sensitive to loud noises and had an incredibly short attention span. Although not confirmed, this leads many to believe he had Asperger’s.
 
Andy Warhol (1928 – 1987)
 
Andy Warhol is one of the most famed artists of the 60s and 70s. Although not formally diagnosed, professionals have pointed to his odd relationships and many of his eccentric behaviors to make an informal diagnosis of the syndrome.
 
Sir Anthony Hopkins (1937 – )
 
One of the most famous actors of the 21st Century, Sir Anthony Hopkins, shot to stardom as Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs. Hopkins has reported that he has high-end Asperger’s which affects his socialization skills. He considered that the condition made him look at people differently but that he thinks it helped him as an actor.
 
Bill Gates (1955 – )
 
Bill Gates has been considered to have Asperger’s Syndrome for years. He is eccentric and has seen to have a habit of rocking and difficulty accepting criticisms. Many consider this to be indicative of the syndrome. Although a formal diagnosis has never been publicized, Mr. Gates remains a hero of the Asperger’s community.
 
Tim Burton (1958 – )
 
We know the American film director, producer, writer and animator Tim Burton for his quirky films such as Corpse Bride and The Planet of the Apes. However, his former long term partner has suggested that Burton displays many symptoms of Asperger’s Syndrome. She noted that he is highly intelligent but lacks social skills, which is indicative of the disorder.
Final Thoughts
 
It can be a little scary to find out someone we care about may have Asperger’s. When faced with this, it is important to remember that it doesn’t change who that person is. They are still perfectly capable of becoming incredibly successful adults. They might even be more successful than your average person.
 
Some of the most famous people suspected to be diagnosed with Asperger’s have been the most impactful people in history. This just goes to show that we are capable of anything, no matter who we are or what makes us different.

How to Improve Your Written Language Skills with 13 Science-Backed Tips

I think the written language is underrated. Speaking is excellent, but well-written statements can get the point across even better at times.
 
I call myself a writer, but boy, do I have a lot to learn. Every day of my life, I do learn new things about written language. Sometimes, I get frustrated during this learning process, but later on, I appreciate the improvements that have stuck with me, believe it or not, even the insults. But instead of insults, teaching can help us learn more without frustration.
 
Improving written language skills
 
Improving language skills in writing can really help locate your voice, your work, and being taken seriously. That’s right, good writing skills also carry respect. As for those who are learning a second language, written language skills are a must. There are several ways we can do this.
 
Your writing can always improve
 
1. Use the dash
 
Everyone’s familiar with commas, so much so that they over-use them all the time. There’s even an epidemic of comma splicing that makes some people cringe. This is where using dashes can come in handy – you will really appreciate how they work.
 
See, I just used one there, and it broke away a bit from the use of too many commas. Practice using the dash to change it up a little bit.
 
2. Write straight through
 
The first draft is so important. While so many people try to write and rewrite as they go, it’s really better to write straight through, mistakes, senseless sentences and all.
 
The reason you should write up the draft all the way first is to keep the flow. When you stop to correct things, you lose a bit of the atmosphere of what you’re writing, and you can even forget the larger picture of your written work.
 
Improving written language sometimes means writing bad material. Within this bad material, there is a story, a speech, or an essay, but at first, it must be a rough draft. After the first draft is completed, you can use your skills to improve your work.
 
3. Use an outline
 
Writing well sometimes requires creating an outline of your topic. In fact, doing this can greatly improve your writing skills over time. This is because an outline helps keep your intricate ideas in order within the body of the basic concept of your work.
 
Even though creating an outline may sound like something elementary, it can be used by writers of all ages to produce successful projects.
 
4. Read… and read some more
 
Have you truly ever connected the ability to write well with reading? Most people have made this connection, but for those who haven’t, this will be a game-changer. Reading many books, and in a variety of genres will help you develop your own voice.
 
When you’re trying to improve your written language skills, having a memory of the flow of a few good books will give you a flow of your own. Just make sure you don’t accidentally copy any material from your head. Hey, I’ve done this before.
 
5. Learn sentence geography
 
There are ways of writing which can draw attention to a certain part of a sentence. It’s about placement, emphasis, and mood. Yes, all aspects of a sentence are important, but there’s almost always a special part of the sentence that hooks the reader….not just the piece of work itself.
 
Learning sentence geography is like using psychological placement instead of something like “all caps” to draw attention to certain words. There are a number of ways to do this such as using unusual adjectives or verbs. The point is to help the reader experience the written word instead of just read.
 
6. Research is important
 
I cannot stress enough about how important it is to research certain topics, especially if you know little about them. Without research your writing, well, it will basically be filled with fluff instead of facts.
 
Fluff is repeating the information you do know or vague statements instead of using new factual information. So avoiding this, doing proper research will greatly improve your writing.
 
7. Try different genres
 
Another way to improving written skills is to expand. Most people have an area that they either love, or feel is easier for them to create within, but writing in various genres does something magical.
 
If you’re used to writing non-fictional memoirs, then you should try poetry, fiction, and smaller projects like descriptions and website content. There are many areas where writing is needed, and it’s smart to delve into as many of these areas as possible.
 
8. Write every day
 
If writing isn’t necessarily your job, then you’re probably not writing every day. A great way to improve your written language skills is to write like it’s your job. It doesn’t matter what type of writing you do as long as you’re picking up the pen, or the keyboard and putting words together.
 
Here’s a tip: set a number of words per day and make sure you write at least that many words each day. Then, maybe you can increase the number of words as you go, which will help even more.
 
9. Join a writing group
 
Writing workshops may seem intimidating, but sharing your ideas with other writers can help you see your work through other minds. You can bounce ideas off others getting well-needed critique to help you improve.
 
Being around others can also boost your morale and confidence giving you the courage to pursue the writing project or job you need to finish.
 
10. Have a good editor
 
Whether you work with a professional editor, or you work with a friend who is a more seasoned writer, who is also delving into editing, let your work be ruthlessly edited. If you don’t let your work be closely examined, critiqued, and torn apart, you will never learn your weak points in the written language.
 
Yes, you may be skilled, but you also have shortcomings like everyone else. An editor will find these shortcomings for you and show you what needs to be changed.
 
11. Simplify and balance
 
Sometimes, simple is better. Beginning writers and sometimes those who’ve been writing for a long time use embellishment or too many adjectives. Sometimes writers even use sentences that are much too long just to get points across.
 
The truth is, breaking down these sentences, and sometimes using simpler words can work much better. On the other hand, remember to refrain from using only short sentences. A good idea would be to balance sentence lengths, which can not only provide the best information but can keep the audience interested, thus make them read more.
 
12. Look at old work
 
They say living in the past is a bad thing, but in this case, it can improve your writing skills. By looking at your old work, you can see the differences between how you write now and how your skills faired in the past.
 
You can do so many things with this practice – you can see how you’ve improved, and you can build your confidence. If you have lots of old work, you should realize, you’ve come far in the writing world.
 
13. Teaching material
 
If learning to improve the basics of writing is what you need, then sometimes written material is the best option. The OWLS 2 Assessment helps teach the basics of the written language with oral and written comprehension scales. This material is actually created for ages 3-21 but can be used by anyone interested in learning the basics of language.
 
Becoming better with the written language
 
Although getting your point across by speaking may be easier for some people, the written language, for others, is the only way to communicate correctly. Whether this is the case, you’re a writer, or you’re just learning a language for the first time, practicing these steps and others, will help you greatly improve.
 
It doesn’t have to be complicated. So, dig in and learn all you can about your written language skills.

7 Weird Movies with Deep Meanings That Will Mess with Your Mind

What’s so great about weird movies?

Some movies can be mind-bending. Others might make us question things we thought were set in stone. And others still might bring us face to face with things that are part of us but better left undisturbed. And there are weird movies.
No matter the theme, films and the stories in them are part of our collective consciousness. One way or another, they are reflections of us and of the way we tell each other stories. Most of them follow traditional schemes, narratives and tropes. Even in those imagined spaces, order prevails.
But what about the films that are not concerned with order? What of the stories whose defining trait is their disorder, their… well, weirdness? Weird movies might be even more valuable to us than we ever imagined.

Let’s take a look at some:

  1. Mandy (Panos Cosmatos, 2018)

Panos Cosmatos is no stranger to weird movies.
In 2010, he gave us the indie wonder “Beyond the Black Rainbow”, with its enigmatic imagery, loopy soundtrack and cryptic storyline. This year, he created a sensation with “Mandy”.
There are a lot of factors for Mandy’s success, and the selection of Nic Cage for the role of the deranged protagonist slowly spiraling into a drug-fueled revenge-quest whilst brandishing a humongous medieval looking axe is only one of them.
The soundtrack is heavy and filled with drone sounds, the color palettes are like someone dropped an acid tab onto the film reel, and the story… Well, the story, centered around Andrea Riseborough’s character, is a trip in and of itself.
  1. The Devils (Ken Russel, 1971)

“The Exorcist” who? This is one of THE seminal weird movies on demonic possession. The film is a dramatized historical account of the rise and fall of Urbain Grandier, a 17th-century Roman Catholic priest executed for witchcraft following the supposed possessions in Loudun, France.
Reed plays Grandier in the film and Vanessa Redgrave plays a hunchbacked sexually repressed nun who finds herself inadvertently responsible for the accusations. The summary doesn’t do this disturbing film an ounce of justice.
The weirdness of the film derives from its visuals as well as its story. Derek Jarman, who worked as Russel’s production designer, created a filmic world in a film about religion, lush with the most sacrilegious colors, aesthetic and imagery.
Redgrave probably rose to new heights owing to her magnificent obsessive contortions, and the antithesis of the clash between piousness and grotesquery is something that will mess with your head for a long, long while.
  1. The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover (Peter Greenaway, 1989)

Speaking of weird, grotesque imagery, how do you like this gem by Peter Greenaway? This is one of those weird movies that don’t really scare you, but you can’t forget them for a minute.
It contains only three or so sets, a deranged mob leader, a guy who always reads, one very white bathroom, and the odd bit of cannibalism. Oh, and food. Lots and lots of food scenes.
Also, an albino ten-year-old tenor. Saying any more than this would really spoil the experience. Nonetheless, his is one weird movie you do not want to neglect seeing.
  1. A Field in England (Ben Wheatley, 2013)

A new strain of weird movies has arisen in the past decade, harking back to the 70’s. It’s called “folk horror revival”, based on the folk horror films of British Cinema in the 70’s, such as “The Wicker Man”.
Ben Wheatley, director of “A field in England”, has contributed to the trend with the majority of his filmography. All his films are a little cooky, but “Field” takes the cake. The film, shot in black-and-white, is set during the mid-17th century English Civil War.
Basically, a bunch of soldiers, an alchemist’s assistant and the alchemist eat a bunch of trippy field mushrooms and thing get really weird after that. The director utilized the use of black and white to create exposure effects, and other montaging tricks.
“A field in England” isn’t just weird; like “Mandy”, it’s a trip that one has to see to truly understand.
  1.  Love Exposure (Sion Sono, 2008)

If Panos Cosmatos is “no stranger to weird movies”, then Sion Sono, the madman who made this epic on love as a religion of collective madness, is the master of weird movies.
“Love Exposure” is nearly four hours long. It all revolves around a teenage Japanese boy trying to win the heart of his man-hating beloved. He believes she is the reincarnation of the Virgin Mary, thus completing his mother’s dying wish.
If this isn’t weird enough, he tries to achieve that via rigorous panty-shots training, excessive deception and becoming involved in a religious cult led by a stalker who also traffics cocaine on the side.This is a weird movie because it really commits to its depiction of love as a religious craze. Not only that, but its length, love-stricken characters, guerilla-style filming and overall offbeat humor contribute to a real cinematic experience.
  1.  Millennium Actress (Satoshi Kon, 2001)

This is one of my favorite films. As far as weird movies go, this might seem a little tame. Upon closer inspection, however, one can tell that this rightly deserves its title as a weird movie.
“Millennium Actress” deals with director Satoshi Kon’s most persisting question: what are the limits of our perception? What is the nature of memory, individual and collective? How is our reality “real”, based on these perceptions and memories?
The movie tells the story of two documentary filmmakers investigating the life of a retired acting legend. As she tells them the story of her life, the difference between reality and cinema becomes blurred.
In “Millennium Actress”, the weirdness lies in the execution. Anyone familiar with Kon’s work knows that he reveled in manipulating filmic space and time via the medium of animation. From one moment to the next, frames collapse onto one another.
We are transported, through the two journalists acting as audience surrogates, from the real world to movie sets and scenes. The scenes are anachronistic, all over the place.  They constitute fragments of the collective memory of Japanese cinema’s landmark moments.
The weirdness of the film lies in the lack of distinction between real life and cinematic life. If there is any difference at all, that is. The film seems to say that all that matters regarding our grasp of “real” is one thing, our memories.
  1.  Skins (Pieles, Eduardo Casanova, 2017)

Hey, it’s on Netflix! Skins (Spanish: Pieles) is a 2017 Spanish drama film directed by Eduardo Casanova. Weird movies-wise, its pastel color palette is only the tip of the iceberg.
Skins gets a spot in this list not because its weirdness is some sort of breakthrough. Instead, it was its anchoring into the most human and profound feelings: the desire to be loved and accepted.
All of the characters in Skins suffer from some form of physical deformity. One woman has only half a “normal” face. A man has modified himself to look like a mermaid. A woman has her anus and her mouth positions reversed and another man suffers from a facial burn.
Yet, despite the physical weirdness, through bittersweet humor and while condemning the fetishization of disabilities, the film has a heart.

You don’t need drugs or alcohol to escape reality. There are many ways that you can take a break from life.

 
Let me tell you, I understand how horribly unbearable life can get. And honestly, you have to be present mentally for the most part. It’s just the responsible thing to do. But, there are some times when you just have to escape reality in order to calm down.
Taking this sort of break from life can help you come back to reality with a fresh perspective. It can help you make better decisions and take charge of your future. I am in great need of a few escape hours, even days.

Going it sober

So, as you already know, there are many people who turn to drugs in order to escape the reality of their lives. Although opinions vary, I think science has offered us better ways to get back on track. Prayer and meditation are prime examples.
With these tools, you give control to something else for a while and get that needed rest you so desire. Here are a few other ways to do this as well.

1. Make something

One of the best ways to escape this thing we call reality is to create something. Being creative takes focus.
If you’re paying full attention to the thing you’re trying to create, the negative thoughts will not have room to influence your thinking. And we all know about the negative thoughts that attack our minds from day to day.
So, getting creative by painting, singing, or even cooking a new dish is a great way to escape.

2. Listen to music

No matter how hard it gets, music can take some of the edge off your problems. If you listen to music before surgery, it actually reduces anxiety and fear, helping you relax.
You can actually remove yourself from the situation at hand and get lost in the soothing sounds of music. Although a tiny bit different, listening to nature sounds is a great idea too.

3. Get active

If you’re struggling with some seriously bad life issues, you have to face them head-on. However, if you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed, you can also take a break for a little while. Physical activity not only promotes good mental health, but it also serves as a great distraction from life’s problems that seem hard to solve.
In order to escape the bonds of reality, try just 20 minutes of exercise a day for 5 days a week. You will notice a big difference in how you handle things and how you respond.

4. Take a nature break

If you’re looking for a place to get active and escape your reality for a bit, choose nature. Instead of staying inside, get out and let your mind take in all the natural wonders of life. You can take a hike, go fishing or even go camping.
This helps you stay away from smartphones, televisions, and computers for a while, and much of the world’s troubles can sneak in through electronics. Step away and step into nature for a while. It does work.

5. Read a book

Here’s one of my favorite ways to escapes the worries of reality. Reading a book transports you to another world where your problems probably don’t exist. To help expand this escape, try reading comical stories or stories with uplifting themes.
I sometimes have to force myself to step away from life with a book in hand. As I start to read, I realize that many of us have lost the ability to enjoy the simple things in life. It’s the simple things in life that can actually help us escape our reality, believe it or not.

6. Journal your thoughts

If you’re reading to help deal with reality, you can take a step further, and start journaling your thoughts. This is especially useful when you really don’t have anyone to talk to about your problems.
Keeping a journal allows you to write about what’s bothering you, helping you process these issues in a healthy manner. You may not get any answers from another person this way, but you may learn different ways to deal with your problems after writing them down in a journal.

7. Utilize laughter

Have you ever heard the saying, “laughter is the best medicine”? Well, honestly, it can sometimes be just that. You might not be able to find many things in your life lately to laugh about, but if you purposely watch a comedy or read a funny book, you can coax a bit of laughter from deep within.
The act of laughing can improve your mood by releasing endorphins and increase blood flow.

An escape can save your life

Unfortunately, some problems become more than we can handle. If life gets too heavy, we can fall into depression and totally lose control. This can happen with anxiety as well.
It’s important to escape reality from time to time so you can figure out what’s best for you and for your individual situation. You can clear your head and organize your priorities until things seem sane again.
I know this because I often have to get away just to catch my breath. I use these methods in my life. I hope these ideas work for you as well.

Do you have a favorite color? Do you realize that color can reveal aspects of your personality?
Take a look at your wardrobe. Is it full of one particular color? Do you gravitate to one or two colors and never wear certain shades?
Colors have a strong psychological effect on our minds and can influence those around us. But what can your favorite color tell you about your personality? If you have a preference for one particular color, then you might be revealing more than you know:

Personality and Color

RED

Red symbolizes the blood, the very essence of life. As such, if you love the color red, you are optimistic, you love life and live it to the full. You are ambitious, intense, strong-willed and energetic.
You can be competitive and will work hard to reach your goals. You love to be the center of attention and are the alphas of this world. Those that love the color red like to lead from the front. However, you can be dogged and aggressive in your pursuits.

ORANGE

Orange is a very social color but one associated with youth. You could say that this color is a free spirit that is also the life and soul of the party.
You love to bring people together, but taking responsibility is not your forte. You’d rather leave that to the grown-ups. You are gregarious and don’t have a bad bone in you. Non-judgemental, you like people until they give you a reason not to.

YELLOW

Yellow is the color of sunshine and suggests optimism and warmth. People who like this color are also critical thinkers. This is because the logical left side of the brain responds to the color yellow.
As a result, if you love yellow, you will also be good at solving problems. The color yellow is all about knowledge and learning. But not only gathering new information but being able to communicate this information onto others.
You are an independent person that tends to have a few very close friends.

PINK

Pink is the color of romance. Just think of Marilyn Monroe in that scene ‘Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend’ when she wore that stunning pink dress.
Pink is a genuinely feminine color and represents the feminine aspects of one’s personality. It is gentle and innocent and those that favor it seek affection, love, acceptance and kindness.
It has a childlike quality to it which indicates a need for protection. This color represents the true romantics who believe in unconditional and uncomplicated love.

PURPLE

The color purple is associated with spirituality, wealth and royalty, but if it is your favorite color, it is an indication of creativity. You are a unique individual that dances to the beat of your own drum.
You are unconventional and don’t care what others think. You can be highly opinionated and believe in the welfare of others.
Often those who like this color are involved in humanitarian causes because it is associated with a more mature personality and a higher spiritual understanding. However, be careful not to come across as holier than thou.

BLUE

There’s a reason why uniforms are often in blue and that is because blue is a harmonious color associated with tradition and order. If you like this color, then you prefer stability and organized life. You don’t like surprises and tend to plan things in advance.
You also have strong principles that are unlikely to change throughout your life. You live a conservative lifestyle and like things to be neat and tidy. You are not the rebels in society, you are more likely to be those upholding the law, rather than breaking it.

GREEN

Green is the color of nature and if is your favorite color, then you are unlikely to live in the middle of the city. You need space around you. You value your friends and family as love is important to you.
You are loyal. Once you have made a friend, you will have them for life. Green signifies growth, life, balance and energy.
You are able to see the bigger picture and balance your life between work and leisure, family and friends. You are fair and just and as a result, people come to you for advice.

BROWN

This is a dependable color that is reliable and down-to-earth. If you have a friend that wears a lot of brown, then they are supportive and won’t let you down. They are serious and you can depend on them. Browns like the simple life and are not extravagant.

BLACK

Many people choose black as their ‘go to’ color as it is fairly neutral. But if it is your favorite color, then it means different things. In younger people, it is a sign of rebellion.
For older women, it shows a level of sophistication. Some people wear black to hide when they don’t want to be noticed. It is also considered to be a sexual color.

WHITE

White is a difficult color to wear. As such, those who do prefer it tend to like an organized life, devoid of clutter and mess. They have high standards and won’t compromise. They are also confident in their abilities. When you wear white you cannot hide any imperfections.

GREY

This is a neutral color that indicates a practical person who can compromise. Typically, those who like grey are hard workers who are conservative in their outlook. However, at times they can lack energy and confidence.

How the Flow State Supercharges Your Brain and How to Get into It.

We all want to be a little bit more productive and we’ve all experienced the extreme focus of flow state, but most of us don’t know how to utilise it.
Productivity can fluctuate for a number of different reasons. Maybe you’re tired, hungry, or stressed. It might just be that you struggle to find your focusFinding your state of flow is the best way to counteract this lapse of productivity. It will help you banish the temptation to procrastinate so that you can start making positive progress.

What is the flow state?

First, we need to understand what the state of flow actually isIt is a term from positive psychology, which is essentially the study of what makes life good, worth living, and how we can flourish.
This state of mind is commonly known as being ‘in the zone’. It is the state where we feel completely immersed in the task at hand, with complete concentration and even enjoyment in the task. When you’re experiencing it, it is common to lose track of your surroundings, even the time.

Flow state and hyperfocus

Flow state can sometimes be confused with hyperfocus, however, the two are entirely different. Hyperfocus is an intense mental concentration or imagination, which often distracts individuals away from tasks.
Although the two are similar in terms of concentration, hyperfocus is concentration on the wrong things, such as videogames and focussing only on a small part of a task. For these reasons, hyperfocus is a common symptom of ADHD and has been proposed to be linked to other conditions.

How to know if you are in the state of flow?

While this state of mind is a somewhat abstract concept, some psychologists have proposed some indicators of experiencing it:

1.Intense and focused concentration on the present moment

When you are experiencing the flow, you are entirely focused on what is going on right there and then. You lose sight of future commitments and past events.

2.Merging of action and awareness

Again, somewhat of an abstract concept, the merging of action and awareness essentially means that your actions feel like an extension of your mind.

3.Loss of reflective self-consciousness

A key indicator of flow state is that we lose the awareness of ourselves in some way. Simply put, it means that we feel less self-critical and self-aware.

4.A sense of personal control over the situation or activity

We may not be in control of the result of a project, but when we are experiencing this state while performing a task, we often feel in complete control.

5.A loss of sense of time

The most common indicator of flow state is a complete loss of time. We’ve all looked up from the clock and wondered where the time went.

6.Experience of intrinsic reward

We don’t even need to know the outcome of a particular task and project. When we are in the state of flow, we receive an intrinsic reward from simply performing the task in the first place. We typically feel as though we have more potential to succeed in the task at hand.

7.Other needs become less important

When experiencing the flow, it is common that we forget about other needs. We may forget we are hungry, thirsty, or tired. We might even come out of flow realising we desperately need the bathroom!

How can the flow state benefit you?

The most obvious benefit you will get is boosted productivity. We all want to get a little bit extra done, improve our focus and make progress on our goals. Finding your flow state is an incredibly useful tool in getting things done, but it also has some unexpected benefits.
A surprising, but not entirely unexpected, result of reaching this state is greater happiness. This is because of two reasons. First, when you are experiencing the flow, you are not necessarily happy or unhappy, you are simply neutral. Then, once the project is finished, you receive the personal reward of finishing a project.
Secondly, the state of flow also tends to give you better performance because your brain is more relaxed, similar to post-meditation. This allows you to achieve greater insight with a project. Moreover, the flow state allows for the release of dopamine, which enhances your ability to notice patterns by heightening our attention and decreasing distractions.
This aspect of being in the flow allows us to also the external rewards from bosses, or project completion. All in all, this gives you a greater proportion of positive emotions and studieshave found that those in flow also tended to improve in levels of self-esteem and self-image.

5 elements of reaching the flow

There are five aspects which fit together to create a state of flow:
  • self-control
  • environment
  • skills
  • purpose
  • reward

Self-control is a key element of being in the flow.

To be able to utilise flow more often, we need to be able to gain control of our willpower. Nathan DeWall, a psychology professor who utilised the science of self-control to become a marathon runner, suggests three ways to develop our self-control:

1.Find your standards and set some goals.

These may be big or small, but are usually things such as hitting a word count, running a certain distance, or drinking a certain amount of water. They are the small goals on the way to the ultimate goal.

2.Set up how you will monitor your goals.

Self-control works best with immediate feedback, and this comes in the form of tracking your goals. Find ways to constantly track your goals, but be flexible enough to alter them if you need to.

3.Be aware of your energy levels.

Our energy fluctuates throughout the day and, with it, so does our willpower. Typically, we will have more self-control and willpower when we have more energy, and these are the times we should practice getting into the flow state.

Environment is an interesting feature when finding your flow.

Although it may seem counterintuitive, the best way to practice flow is to push yourself slightly out of your comfort zone. This allows your body and mind to adapt to more challenging environments. As a consequence, when you do reach the state of flow, you will be less distracted by more challenging environments.

Skills allow us to begin the task in the first place but should be well matched with a good level of challenge.

To experience the flow, we need enough knowledge to complete a task and feel as though we are deliberately using them. That is to say that we must be present when applying our knowledge and do it on purpose, rather than just going through the motions.

Purposeful work is much more likely to get you into the flow state.

When we feel connected and passionate about something, we pay much more attention to it. Consider what you are creating, who you are creating it for, and what is the expected outcome. The more something stimulates us, the more motivated we become, and this is an essential element of finding your flow.
If a task doesn’t feel so important to you, find ways of making it important. Maybe it will help your job performance, improve your physical capability, or just make you feel good about yourself when you finish.

Reward is the last element of finding the state of flow.

In its essence, reward simply a by-product of flow state but links all of the rest together. Understanding the reward of your work will almost always help you find your purpose. It will also motivate you to apply your skills, develop self-control and put yourself out of your comfort zone. The reward is the motivation to see a task from start to finish.
Finding and practising these elements will help you successfully enter flow more often and reap the incredible benefits. Not only will it boost your productivity, but it will also holistically improve your life.

In the case of success, things are more complicated and demanding. It requires you to devote considerable time, efforts, patience, and diligenceto the work while you are on your way to the desired results.
But first, you have to define your own kind of success, for example:
  • Develop your own business and promote it to the international market.
  • Be able to travel frequently and explore the world from different perspectives.
  • Start a family and guarantee a prosperous future for your children.

These are just examples — you can set any goals that will let you consider yourself successful once you reach them. Nevertheless, the next thing to do is decide what you need to succeed.

Motivational success stories are crucial to understanding and replicating success in all aspects of life.

In almost every type of social setting, extroverts are popular, whereas introverts are usually relegated to the background. But the prejudices against introverts are not a new or recent problem. In fact, for more than 30 years, the American Psychiatric Association has considered introversion a disorder. They judged that introversion inhibited the individual’s ability to integrate into society and succeed in our increasingly competitive world. However, we can learn from these motivational success stories to know what the truth is.
Yet, when it comes to creativity, extraversion is not always an asset. Nikola Tesla believed that the tasks that we usually associate with creativity are in the realm of loneliness and introversion: to observe, reflect, meditate, write, draw, search, project.

In fact, both introverts and extroverts have their place when it comes to creativity.

Some people who are trying to solve a problem will prefer direct sensory contact and will rely on their feelings and emotions. This will be the field of choice for extroverts who need to be in direct contact with their environment and other people. But what about introverts?

Innovators Are Often Introverts

Innovators are often introverts with an original, individualistic, insightful personality. They prefer ideas to sensations and Susan Cain, in her book ‘Quiet: The Power Introverts In A World That Cannot Stop Talking‘, reaffirms the fact that introversion is often considered as an illness and that it must be treated.
She recalls that the present society is arranged for and suited for the extroverts. Whether it’s workplaces or schools, everything is done to encourage group work in open spaces. Cain points out that 70% of American workers occupy open spaces. From 1970 to 2000, in the United States, the average area of the workspace decreased dramatically from 500 square feet (46 m 2) to 200 square feet (19 m 2).
Some of the natural reflexes attributed to introverts are not unfounded since we have seen enough motivational success stories. For example, wanting to isolate oneself for silence and working more effectively is just neurological. A study conducted by UK researchers on 38,000 knowledge workers shows that excessive stimulation is a drag and negatively affects performance.
The simple fact of being interrupted in the execution of a task is one of the main barriers to productivity and increases the risk of errors by 50%. In addition, after an interruption, the return to the initial task, whether it is writing a report or computer coding, requires about fifteen minutes.
Solitude, something regularly sought out by introverts, promotes the acquisition of new knowledge. A simple walk in a natural environment, a forest or a park, for example, soothes the brain and results in easier learning.

Here are some motivational success stories that demonstrate the power of introverts.

Abraham Lincoln

The introverted leadership qualities of the 16th US President have often been studied by researchers and educators for their “geekiness, dignity and calm”.

Mark Zuckerberg

Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s chief operating officer, told the New York Times in 2010, Zuckerberg, the founder, and CEO of the social network, is shy and introverted and often does not seem very friendly to people who do not know Zuckerberg well.
She added, “He really cares about the people who work here.” To this day, no one on earth shares motivational success stories quite like the FB founder.

Sir Isaac Newton

One of the key figures of science, Newton discovered the very laws of motion as well as universal gravitation. Newton was actually recognized for being a deeply introspective character who strictly desired and protected his privacy.

Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein is among the revered and respected physicists in the world. He has frequently been quoted as saying, the solitude and monotony of a true quiet life stimulate the creative mind. Einstein received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921 and is best known for the theory of relativity.

Warren Buffett

Warren Buffett is known as the Omaha oracle and is considered one of the most successful introverts and business people in the world. Buffett said he initially had the “intellect for the business” but felt he had to sign up for Dale Carnegie’s seminar course, “How to Influence People“.

Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan is one of the best basketball players of all time. He is also one of the best-introverted athletes. He set so many records in basketball that are said to be impossible to beat by anyone ever again.

George Orwell

Orwell is known as one of the most influential writers in history. He wrote the critically successful novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. Not only did he write novels, but he was also a journalist and very politically outspoken.
Orwell was known to be very private, had only a few friends and felt extremely uncomfortable in crowds. In fact, many of his encounters with people are said to have been awkward and forced.
Introverts are thrilled to add value to their team and to play discrete conductors. Since they do not seek glory, they don’t pull the blanket from under others.
Another point that adds to the motivational success stories and advantage of introverts is that they trust their teams more than extroverted managers. In short, they have no equal to rely on and delegate and are extremely reliable.

Do you remember the movie Groundhog Day? Well, life sometimes feels stuck just like with the characters in that movie. Learn how to fix that.

You might be going through life feeling pretty happy and then all of a sudden, you realize you’ve hit a dead end. Life seems stuck…boring, and fairly uneventful. It feels like you are going through the motions just like in that film Groundhog Day.
In the movie, Bill Murry and Andy Mcdowell play two people in love who get stuck living one day over and over until they get something right. Do you feel that way?

Let’s get unstuck and do great things!

So, the goal is not to live like we’re in a Groundhog day sequel, right? Well, the objective is to apply a few ideasand rules in order to un-wedge ourselves from the rut we’ve created.
Yes, even though we probably didn’t mean to do so, we’ve gotten ourselves stuck, and it’s our job to change that. Listen up!

1. Perspective changes

Maybe you’re in a rut simply because of the way you look at things. Maybe you don’t see your life in the right light or maybe you haven’t seen an angle that could propel you over the edge and into newness. First off, you absolutely have to see things differently.
For some people, the grip of past lives and past situations stops them from moving forward. You will never be able to make a new life for yourself while holding onto the apron strings of the past. Let them go, immediately.
Now, open yourself up to new ideas by traveling, physical activity or even meditation to clear out the cobwebs. Either way, change the way you look at life and life will change too!

2. Be creative

Did you know that being artistic in some form can work wonders in your life? Being creative can also lift you from the norm and place you somewhere spectacular. The reason why being creative works so well with helping you get unstuck is that it makes you feel like someone else for a while.
You are no longer a housekeeper, mother, employee or wife. You are now an artist, a revolutionary, and a rebel! Being creative transports you to another dimension where you can create whatever you want to be. You can be creative through painting, writing, or even music, as long as you feel free to express yourself openly.

3. Recognize patterns

Just like in the Groundhog Day movie, you have to look for patterns in order to break free. If you’re stuck now, pay attention to the people you’re associating with, the environment you operate within and the overall vibes surrounding you. How are these things similar to times before when you were stuck in life?
When you discover the patterns and causes for being stuck, you can understand how to differentiate between people and things to keep and which ones to cut away from your life.
Yes, it’s just that simple and just that harsh. Sometimes, things have to be removed in order for you to live your best, most productive life.

4. Take care of YOU

One thing that many of us neglect is taking care of ourselves. When life seems to get stuck, the last thing we think about doing is exercising or eating healthy. When we feel stuck, we often eat bad foods or do risky things in an attempt to fill a void that’s opened up inside.
The truth is, this is the opposite of what we should be doing. When we feel like our own Groundhog day has arrived, we should kick it into high gear with self-care. We should get moving, we should visit the spa, and by all means, we should eat our best.
Why do you ask? Well, we can only understand and figure out how to get unstuck, if we are feeling our best. We should take care of us, so we can literally take care of our life.

5. Think about your purpose

Maybe you think you know what your purpose is, but did you know that this can change over time? Although it may seem frustrating to think your purpose changes, it really does. What might have seemed right for you in the past could be all wrong now. So, it’s time to re-examine what you were meant to do and be.
There are a few ways you can examine your purpose. What makes you happy? What inspires you to be a better person? There are so many questions you can ask yourself, and when you do, keep a journal of your honest answers.
Over time, you will feel a shift toward your destiny. You will also see your life moving once more toward a future.

6. Truly let go of the past

Just as your perspectives can change, so can your entire mindset. I want you to notice just how much of your time is spent thinking of the past.
I bet you would be surprised by the quantity of time spent with childhood memories and traumatic events. So much of your life is spent rehashing things that really don’t matter anymore. Can you change anything that has already happened?
You cannot change the past, and so why are you there so much? This could be the primary reason why you are stuck. One really raw way to get unstuck in life is to refuse to ponder past events any longer. Yes, it’s difficult, but the rewards of letting go of the past are amazing.

7. Start small

So, it’s clear by now that you want to get unstuck in life and move forward, right? Well, in order to truly feel this happening, you have to change things. Let’s be clear on one thing, you don’t have to make huge changes at first. It is quite alright to start with small steps.
For instance, move your furniture, change your daily routine, or even learn a new craft or hobby. All it takes is altering one area of your life to activate great changes in the future. You never know what might happen just by taking a different route to work.

No more Groundhog Day…I expect greatness!

There shall be no more Groundhog Days feeling trapped and feeling as though you are living the same day over and over again. No, from this moment forward, we are going to shake things up and bring great changes to our lives. These shall be positive changes, and things that we can cherish forever.
So, get off that couch, turn off the television, and do something different today. You will thank me later.
